  • Timberwolves' Luka Garza: Just misses double-double Friday

Garza scored 20 points (7-13 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 5-8 Ft) while adding nine rebounds, an assist and a steal in 22 minutes off the bench during Friday's preseason win over the Lakers.

The 25-year-old center played big minutes as the Timberwolves eased key frontcourt players like Rudy Gobert and Naz Reid into the preseason schedule. Garza isn't expected to have a big role for Minnesota once again in 2024-25, but the trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks for Julius Randle gives Garza a slightly clearer path to minutes at center should injuries hit the team's big men.

  • Timberwolves' Rob Dillingham: Pops for 21 against Lakers

Dillingham scored 21 points (9-20 FG, 3-6 3Pt) while adding four assists and a rebound in 25 minutes off the bench during Friday's preseason win over the Lakers.

The 19-year-old guard got plenty of run in Minnesota's preseason opener, and he showed off the skills that made him the eighth overall pick in the 2024 Draft. Dillingham may not see much of the court early in his rookie season behind a veteran backcourt led by Mike Conley, Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, but if injuries hit, the Kentucky product could be asked to do more than provide some instant offense off the bench.

  • Timberwolves' Donte DiVincenzo: Perfect in preseason debut

DiVincenzo scored 11 points (4-4 FG, 3-3 3Pt) while adding two rebounds and an assist in 10 minutes during Friday's preseason win over the Lakers.

Seeing his first action since the trade that sent him to the Timberwolves, DiVincenzo put together a perfect shooting night before exiting along with the rest of the starting five. The 27-year-old guard will likely come off the bench behind Anthony Edwards when the regular season tips off, but after dropping a career-high 15.5 points and 3.5 threes over 81 games for the Knicks last season, DiVincenzo is expected to be one of the key pieces of Minnesota's second unit in 2024-25.

  • Timberwolves' Naz Reid: Starting in preseason opener

Reid will start at power forward in Friday's exhibition matchup with the Lakers, Alan Horton of the Timberwolves Radio Network reports.

With Julius Randle (shoulder) sidelined, Reid will get the start alongside Rudy Gobert in the frontcourt. When healthy, Randle is expected to start in the regular season, with Reid playing a similar role to what he saw in the 2023-24 campaign.

  • Timberwolves' Donte DiVincenzo: Starting vs. Lakers

DiVincenzo is starting in Friday's preseason game against the Lakers, Alan Horton of the Timberwolves Radio Network reports.

DiVincenzo will debut for Minnesota as the starting shooting guard in this preseason game. However, he won't carry this role into the regular season, as he'll only be part of the starting unit in this game due to the absence of Anthony Edwards (rest).

  • Timberwolves' Julius Randle: Will not debut Friday

Randle (shoulder) will be held out of Friday's preseason opener versus the Lakers, Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reports.

Exactly one week after being dealt from New York to Minnesota, Randle is not ready to make his debut against the team that drafted him. This is unsurprising, as the big man was expected to be limited during the preseason as he recovers from a shoulder injury. When healthy, he is expected to start alongside Rudy Gobert in the frontcourt. In his absence Friday, Naz Reid is the likely candidate to start.

  • Timberwolves' Anthony Edwards: Not playing in preseason opener

Edwards (rest) won't play in Friday's preseason contest against the Lakers, Dave McMenamin of ESPN.com reports.

The Lakers are resting LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and the Timberwolves will do the same with Edwards and Julius Randle, so this game will be lacking star power. Edwards is expected to operate as the Timberwolves' go-to player on offense in 2024-25 following the trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks.

  • Timberwolves' Terrence Shannon: Participates in practice

Shannon (toe) has been practicing and going through drills to start Minnesota's training camp, Will Eudy of dunkingwithwolves.com reports.

Shannon missed Minnesota's Summer League finale due to a toe injury but appears to be healthy heading into the 2024-25 campaign. The rookie forward will likely compete for depth minutes early in the season.

  • Timberwolves' Naz Reid: Will remain sixth man

Reid will continue coming off the bench this season while new acquisition Julius Randle (shoulder) will enter the starting lineup when healthy, Evan Sidery of Forbes.com reports.

Reid thrived off the bench en route to claiming Sixth Man of the Year honors last season, and Minnesota will opt to keep him in the same role for 2024-25. The 25-year-old was productive as a starter as well, averaging 17.6 points and 7.0 rebounds while shooting 46.0 percent from the field across 14 cameos with the first unit. Since it's unclear if Randle will be fully healthy for Opening Night as he continues ramping up from a right shoulder dislocation suffered in January, Reid likely profiles for an enlarged role regardless of Minnesota's frontcourt shuffle.

  • Timberwolves' Julius Randle: Likely to start

Coach Chris Finch said Wednesday that Randle (shoulder) has "probably earned a starting role given his accomplishments," Jace Frederick of St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Although Randle will likely be a limited participant throughout training camp as he continues recovering from a right shoulder dislocation, his career pedigree puts him on track to enter the starting lineup upon his return to health. The two-time All-NBA forward will reinforce Minnesota's rebounding on both ends, offering some secondary creation and facilitation from the post. Naz Reid is likely a primary candidate to move into the starting lineup if Randle cannot be cleared by Opening Night.

  • Timberwolves' Jaylen Clark: Ready for training camp

Clark (undisclosed) said Monday that he has been ramping up his activity ahead of training camp and is expected to be a full participant this week, Andrew Dukowitz of Zone Coverage reports.

Clark missed the entire 2023-24 season working his way back from a torn Achilles. He played in the Las Vegas Summer League but battled an undisclosed injury towards the end of it. The No. 53 overall pick in the 2023 Draft, Clark will need a strong training camp to make a case for a rotation spot.

  • Timberwolves' Mike Conley: Will have rest days in 2024-25

Coach Chris Finch told Conley this offseason that he won't play as many games as he did last year, Jace Frederick of St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

At 36 years old, Conley made 76 regular-season appearances, his most since 2012-13, and played in 15 of Minnesota's 16 playoff games. While Conley was excellent in his role last year, Finch clearly thinks that many appearances won't be sustainable for the veteran point guard. Fantasy managers should anticipate rest days when drafting Conley, who might have a similar setup as Al Horford has had in Boston over the last couple of years.

  • Timberwolves' Keita Bates-Diop: Headed to Minnesota

The Knicks traded Bates-Diop (shin) to the Timberwolves alongside Julius Randle (shoulder) and Donte DiVincenzo in a three-team deal that also sent DaQuan Jeffries to Charlotte, Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic reports.

Bates-Diop was traded from the Nets to the Knicks earlier this offseason but will now return to Minnesota, where he started his NBA career in 2018-19. Bates-Diop will likely compete for depth minutes in Minnesota's forward rotation.
