Top Grizzlies News

  • Grizzlies' Scotty Pippen: Inks four-year deal

The Grizzlies signed Pippen to a four-year contract Tuesday, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports.

Pippen made 21 regular-season appearances, including 16 starts, for Memphis in 2023-24. Over that span, the 23-year-old guard averaged 12.9 points, 4.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 25.1 minutes. Pippen is now set to be the long-term backup point guard to Ja Morant (ankle).

  • Grizzlies' Jaylen Wells: Stuffs stat sheet in win Monday

Wells ended with 12 points (4-7 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT), six rebounds, three assists and one steal across 27 minutes in Monday's 120-116 preseason win over the Pacers.

With Desmond Bane (undisclosed) returning to game action Monday, Wells retreated to the bench and posted an efficient 12 points. The No. 39 overall pick of the 2024 Draft will likely struggle to pick up significant playing time in the regular season while buried behind Bane, Vince Williams (lower leg), Luke Kennard, Jake LaRavia and John Konchar. However, Wells' stellar play during both the Summer League and preseason bodes well for the possibility that he climbs the depth chart throughout the 2024-25 campaign.

  • Grizzlies' Yuki Kawamura: Produces off bench in win Monday

Kawamura tallied 10 points (3-7 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 1-2 FT), seven assists, one rebound and one steal across 25 minutes during Monday's 120-116 preseason win over the Pacers.

Kawamura signed a non-guaranteed, Exhibit 10 deal with the Grizzlies in the beginning of September. Since, the 23-year-old has continued to prove why he may deserve a roster spot with the club, and he logged a game-high seven assists against the Pacers. While Memphis has already filled its two-way spots, Kawamura could warrant consideration for a two-way pact if Scotty Pippen, Jay Huff, or Cam Spencer are elevated to the NBA level on a full-time basis.

  • Grizzlies' Desmond Bane: Ties game high with 23 points Monday

Bane amassed 23 points (9-16 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 2-4 FT), two rebounds and two assists across 22 minutes in Monday's 120-116 preseason win over the Pacers.

Zach Edey and Bane tied for a game-high 23 points in Monday's contest. The sharpshooter missed Saturday's matchup against the Bulls due to undisclosed reasons, but he returned to the starting five while catching fire versus the Pacers. The 26-year-old averaged a career-high 23.7 points and 5.5 assists across 34.4 minutes per game last season; however, he was limited to only 42 regular-season outings due to injuries to both his ankle and back.

  • Grizzlies' Zach Edey: Nears double-double Monday

Edey finished with 23 points (10-15 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-4 FT), nine rebounds, one assist and one steal across 19 minutes in Monday's 120-116 preseason win over the Pacers.

The rookie dominated the Pacers in the paint as he scored 23 points while shooting 66.7 percent from the field, tying Desmond Bane's game high in points as well. Edey is set to serve as the Grizzlies' starting center alongside Jaren Jackson in the frontcourt, and Edey has made an impact during the preseason while looking like a potential Rookie of the Year candidate. While preseason competition clearly differs from the regular season, the 22-year-old's play thus far bodes well for his role to begin the 2024-25 campaign.

  • Grizzlies' Marcus Smart: Fails to play Monday

Smart (undisclosed) was held out of Monday's preseason game against the Pacers.

The team didn't officially rule Smart out prior to Monday's clash, but it wasn't a shock to see that he didn't enter the game. Memphis has yet to reveal whether he continues to be sat down due to a minor injury or for rest purposes. Smart's next opportunity to suit up will arrive Friday against the Heat.

  • Grizzlies' Ja Morant: Doesn't play Monday

Morant (ankle) didn't play in Monday's 120-116 preseason win over the Pacers.

Morant is still dealing with a mild ankle sprain, though he is expected to be back by Opening Night. In the superstar's absence, the Grizzlies will continue to take an extended look at Scotty Pippen and Yuki Kawamura. Morant's last chance to suit up again during the preseason will come Friday versus the Heat.

  • Grizzlies' Ja Morant: Not listed with starters

Morant (ankle) won't start Monday's preseason game against the Pacers, Keith Smith of Spotrac.com reports.

Morant and Marcus Smart (undisclosed) likely won't play Monday, but the Grizzlies haven't officially ruled them out. Morant suffered a mild ankle sprain earlier in the preseason, and it's unclear when he'll be ready for game action again.

  • Grizzlies' Zach Edey: Not part of starting lineup

Edey won't start Monday's preseason game against the Pacers, Michael Wallace of the Grizzlies' official site reports.

Edey started the first three exhibitions and was solid. On Saturday, he posted 15 points (5-10 FG), eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks in 22 minutes during a win over the Bulls. It's unclear if Edey is getting a night off or a look as a reserve ahead of the regular season.

  • Grizzlies' Brandon Clarke: Gets starting nod

Clarke will start Monday's game against the Pacers, Michael Wallace of the Grizzlies' official site reports.

Clarke will knock Zach Edey out of the starting lineup. The veteran Clarke missed most of last season due to a knee injury but was a key part of Memphis' frontcourt rotation during his first four years in the league.

  • Grizzlies' Marcus Smart: Not starting Monday

Smart (undisclosed) won't start Monday's preseason game against the Pacers, Michael Wallace of the Grizzlies' official site reports.

Ja Morant (ankle) and Smart are unlikely to play again, but Memphis hasn't officially ruled them out. They'll have one more chance to suit up during the preseason -- Friday against Miami -- before the regular season starts.

  • Grizzlies' Jake LaRavia: Not starting Monday

LaRavia won't start Monday's preseason game against the Pacers, Michael Wallace of the Grizzlies' official site reports.

LaRavia took Santi Aldama's spot in the starting lineup Saturday in Chicago, but the two will switch places again Monday. With Jaren Jackson dealing with a hamstring injury, LaRavia could see steady reserve minutes to open the regular season.

  • Grizzlies' Santi Aldama: Returns to starting lineup

Aldama will start Monday's preseason game against the Pacers, Michael Wallace of the Grizzlies' official site reports.

Aldama returns to the starting lineup after Jake LaRavia took his spot Saturday in Chicago. With Jaren Jackson's (hamstring) status for the start of the regular season in question, Aldama has a clear path to consistent playing time.

  • Grizzlies' Jaylen Wells: Back to bench

Wells won't start Monday's preseason game against the Pacers, Michael Wallace of the Grizzlies' official site reports.

With Desmond Bane out for undisclosed reasons, Wells drew a spot start Saturday against the Bulls and scored 24 points in 32 minutes. However, Bane is back, so Wells will come off the bench, though he could still see a sizable role given Ja Morant (ankle) and Marcus Smart (undisclosed) are unlikely to play.

  • Grizzlies' Desmond Bane: Back in action Monday

Bane (undisclosed) will start Monday's preseason game against the Pacers, Michael Wallace of the Grizzlies' official site reports.

Bane didn't suit up Saturday against Chicago for undisclosed reasons but will return to action Monday. He's joined in the starting lineup by Scotty Pippen, Jake LaRavia, Santi Aldama and Brandon Clarke.

  • Grizzlies' Jake LaRavia: Stuffs stat sheet Saturday

LaRavia posted 20 points (5-16 FG, 2-7 3Pt, 8-9 FT), nine rebounds, an assist, two steals and a block across 27 minutes in Saturday's 124-121 preseason win over the Bulls.

Similar to Jaylen Wells, LaRavia took advantage of this spot start to strengthen his case for a rotation spot once the 2024-25 regular season kicks in. Injuries allowed LaRavia to carve a decent role off the bench in the previous campaign, when he averaged 10.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists across 23.0 minutes per game in 35 regular-season appearances. He'll aim to maintain that role for a healthier Grizzlies roster in 2024-25.

  • Grizzlies' Jaylen Wells: Scores 24 in spot start

Wells finished with 24 points (9-18 FG, 4-10 3Pt, 2-4 FT), two rebounds, six assists and a steal across 32 minutes in Saturday's 124-121 preseason win over the Bulls.

Wells was one of several non-regulars looking to strengthen their cases for a rotation spot who started for the Grizzlies in this game, and he certainly made his presence felt as an excellent scorer and capable playmaker. Wells' case for a rotation spot is far from over, though, and he will compete with John Konchar, Vince Williams (lower leg) and Jake LaRavia for minutes off the bench in a best-case scenario.

  • Grizzlies' Zach Edey: Makes two-way impact Saturday

Edey registered 15 points (5-10 FG, 5-7 FT), eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks across 22 minutes in Saturday's 124-121 preseason win over the Bulls.

Edey has shown glimpses of his talent in the preseason, and while a final decision hasn't been made yet, it seems he'll open the 2024-25 campaign as the starting center due to his two-way impact. If Edey starts, he should have plenty of fantasy upside as a young player capable of making his presence felt on both ends of the court.

  • Grizzlies' Ja Morant: Not in starting five Saturday

Morant (ankle) is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's preseason game against the Bulls.

Morant is not expected to suit up as the club plans to work him back slowly for Opening Night. The superstar sustained a mild ankle sprain during Monday's preseason game against Dallas and hasn't played since. It is unclear if the 25-year-old will return during the preseason, but his next chance to do so will come Monday against the Pacers.

... See More ... See Less
  • Grizzlies' Jake LaRavia: Receives starting nod Saturday

LaRavia will join the starting five in Saturday's preseason game against the Bulls.

LaRavia will enter the starting five with Santi Aldama and Desmond Bane both expected to take a scheduled day off due to rest. LaRavia carved out a significant role in the rotation last season due to a litany of injuries, during which he averaged 10.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists across 23.0 minutes per game in 35 regular-season appearances.
