Top Capitals News

  • Capitals' Aliaksei Protas: Slated to be game-time call

Protas (foot) will probably be a game-time decision for Game 5 against Montreal on Wednesday, Tom Gulitti of NHL.com reports.

Head coach Spencer Carbery believes Protas is close to being available, and the 24-year-old forward will return to the lineup once given the green light to play. Protas compiled 30 goals, 66 points and 142 shots on net through 76 regular-season appearances in 2024-25. He could occupy a top-six role if he is back for Game 5.

  • Capitals' Nic Dowd: Slides assist in win

Dowd notched an assist, two PIM and a plus-2 rating in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Dowd snapped a four-game point drought with the helper on a Brandon Duhaime empty-netter in the third period. The 34-year-old Dowd continues to be an important depth forward for the Capitals, functioning as a shutdown center. This was his first point to go with five shots on net, 10 hits, nine blocked shots and a plus-1 rating over four playoff games.

  • Capitals' Anthony Beauvillier: Puts up helper Sunday

Beauvillier notched an assist and two shots on goal in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Beauvillier continues to look excellent in a top-line role during the playoffs. He has a goal, four assists, 11 shots on net, 13 hits, three blocked shots and a plus-4 rating over four postseason contests. Beauvillier's spot on the top line will be safe at least until Aliaksei Protas (foot) is able to return, though Protas has been a game-time decision for the last couple of contests.

  • Capitals' Jakob Chychrun: Garners helper in win

Chychrun notched an assist, two blocked shots, two PIM and a plus-3 rating in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Chychrun has a goal and an assist over the last two games after going six contests without a point. The defenseman continues to handle a large role on the Capitals' top pairing and is also seeing a strong share of power-play time this postseason. He's at two points, eight shots on net, five hits, 13 blocked shots, four PIM and a plus-5 rating over four playoff outings.

  • Capitals' Connor McMichael: Adds assist Sunday

McMichael logged an assist, four shots on goal and a plus-2 rating in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

McMichael set up Tom Wilson's empty-netter in the final minute of the third period. The 24-year-old McMichael has regained a scoring touch in the postseason with three goals on 12 shots, one assist, three hits and a plus-3 rating over four outings. He's in a top-six role and should continue to be a steady source of offense throughout the playoffs.

  • Capitals' Trevor van Riemsdyk: Supplies two helpers

Van Riemsdyk recorded two assists in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Van Riemsdyk snapped a 12-game point drought, which spanned all of April up to Sunday. He got back on the scoresheet by helping out on third-period tallies from Brandon Duhaime and Andrew Mangiapane, which flipped a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead. In the regular season, van Riemsdyk had 21 points, 80 shots on net, 151 blocked shots and a plus-20 rating over 82 appearances in a bottom-four role.

  • Capitals' Tom Wilson: Deposits empty-netter

Wilson scored an empty-net goal on three shots, added six hits and went plus-2 in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Wilson had an assist in four of the previous five contests, but this was his first goal since April 10 versus the Hurricanes. The top-six winger has done his usual job of being an irritant to opponents, racking up 16 hits, 14 PIM and eight shots on net in addition to his three points over four playoff outings. Wilson remains a strong choice in any format that counts hits or PIM.

  • Capitals' Andrew Mangiapane: Slings helper in win

Mangiapane notched an assist, two shots on goal and two blocked shots in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Mangiapane buried his chance at 16:23 of the third period, and that goal stood as the game-winner. The winger has earned a goal, an assist, nine shots on net, two hits, three blocked shots and a plus-1 rating over four playoff outings. Mangiapane is capable of doing some depth scoring, but his chances remain somewhat limited in a third-line role.

  • Capitals' Dylan Strome: One of each in win

Strome scored a goal on two shots, added an assist and went plus-2 in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Strome has gotten on the scoresheet in seven straight games, earning five goals and seven assists in that span. He's picked up two goals, five helpers, eight shots, a plus-3 rating, three blocked shots and two hits over four playoff contests. Strome is locked in on the top line and red-hot on offense, so he's a strong choice in DFS at this stage of the postseason.

... See More ... See Less
  • Capitals' Brandon Duhaime: Scores twice Sunday

Duhaime scored two goals on three shots, added five hits and blocked two shots in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Duhaime banked in a shot to tie the game at 2-2 at 6:39 of the third period, and he added an empty-netter later in the frame. This two-goal effort ended a stretch of 13 contests in which Duhaime was limited to two assists, 11 shots on net, 33 hits and 28 PIM. He's picked up six shots, 15 hits, four blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating over four playoff outings, though he remains firmly in a bottom-six role.

  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Bounces back after injury scare

Thompson stopped 16 of 18 shots in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Canadiens in Game 4.

Thompson left Friday's Game 3 with an apparent lower-body injury, but he was able to avoid missing additional time. The Capitals put in a better effort Sunday, limiting the shots Thompson saw, and he let in only two power-play tallies to Juraj Slafkovsky and Cole Caufield. This win extended the Capitals' series lead to 3-1, and Thompson has allowed 10 goals on 114 shots over those four contests. Assuming he feels fine after this outing, he can be penciled in to start again in Wednesday's Game 5 on home ice.

  • Capitals' Aliaksei Protas: Not available for Game 4

Protas (foot) will not suit up for Game 4 against Montreal on Sunday, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.

Protas will miss a 10th consecutive game Sunday, as he hasn't been in the lineup since April 4 versus Chicago. He'll have a few days to try to work his way back to full health before Game 5 on Wednesday. Considering the long layoff since his last appearance, Protas may be eased into action once he's cleared to play.

  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Good to go for Game 4

Thompson (lower body) will tend the road twine Sunday versus the Canadiens in Game 4, per Sammi Silber of The Hockey News.

Thompson was deemed a game-time decision heading into Sunday after he was injured in Friday's Game 3 loss. The 28-year-old needed assistance leaving the ice after getting hurt in that contest, but he's healthy enough to return for a pivotal road matchup just two days later. Charlie Lindgren is on hand as Washington's No. 2 netminder in the event that Thompson aggravates his lower-body injury.

  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Game-time decision

Thompson (lower body) will be a game-time decision for Sunday's Game 4 road matchup versus Montreal, according to Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post.

Thompson participated in Sunday's morning skate after being helped off the ice in the third period of Friday's 6-3 loss to the Canadiens in Game 3. He occupied the starter's crease during Sunday's session before heading to the dressing room at the same time as Charlie Lindgren. The 28-year-old Thompson has a 2-1 record with a 2.73 GAA and a .917 save percentage this postseason.

  • Capitals' Aliaksei Protas: Game-time call

Aliaksei Protas (foot) will be a game-time decision for Game 4 against Montreal on Sunday, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.

Protas could return from a nine-game absence after being cleared for contact during Saturday's practice. He didn't skate with Washington's extras Sunday, according to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, which is another encouraging sign. The 24-year-old Protas amassed 30 goals, 66 points and 142 shots on net across 76 regular-season appearances in 2024-25.

... See More ... See Less
  • Capitals' Logan Thompson: Not practicing Saturday

Thompson (lower body) did not participate in Saturday's optional skate, Bailey Johnson of The Washington Post reports.

Coach Spencer Carbary did not provide an update on Thompson's injury or availability for Sunday's Game 4 matchup in Montreal. Thompson was saddled with the loss Friday, allowing five goals on 35 shots in a 6-3 Montreal victory. He has given up eight goals on 96 shots (.917 save percentage) in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. If Thompson is out for Sunday's matchup, Clay Stevenson will probably be Charlie Lindgren's backup.

  • Capitals' Aliaksei Protas: Cleared for contact

Protas (foot) was a full participant in Saturday's practice and could be ready to play in Game 4 against Montreal on Sunday, Tarik El-Bashir of Monumental Sports Network reports.

After being cut by a skate, Protas has been absent for the Capitals' last nine games, including the first three contests of Washington's first-round playoff series versus the Canadiens. The 24-year-old forward would provide an offensive boost if he receives the green light to return to the lineup. Protas broke out in 2024-25 with 30 goals and 66 points in 76 regular-season appearances.

... See More ... See Less
  • Capitals' Andrew Mangiapane: Records assist in Game 3

Mangiapane notched an assist and two shots on goal in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Canadiens in Game 3.

Mangiapane snapped a six-game point drought with the helper. The 29-year-old has played in a bottom-six role for much of the season, and that hasn't changed in the playoffs. He's added seven shots on net and two hits over three playoff outings after a regular season where he had 28 points -- his lowest total in six years -- with 95 shots on net, 74 hits and an even plus-minus rating over 81 appearances.
