Top Islanders News

  • Islanders' Mathew Barzal: Provides pair of helpers

Barzal notched two assists, including one on the power play, and three shots on goal in Monday's 3-1 win over the Blue Jackets.

Barzal is surging on offense -- this was his third multi-point effort over the last five games. He has three goals and seven assists over eight outings in January. The 27-year-old forward has 18 points (four on the power play), 65 shots on net and a plus-7 rating through 25 appearances this season. Barzal has been a fixture on the top line when healthy.

  • Islanders' Simon Holmstrom: Tallies shorthanded game-winner

Holmstrom scored a shorthanded goal in Monday's 3-1 win over the Blue Jackets.

Holmstrom's shortie at 2:57 of the second period stood as the game-winner. This was his second game back after he missed seven contests due to an upper-body injury. The 23-year-old forward has 10 goals, 13 helpers, 45 shots on net, 28 blocked shots and a plus-3 rating over 39 appearances. He's emerging as a decent two-way forward, and he needs just two more points to match his production from 75 regular-season outings in 2023-24.

  • Islanders' Bo Horvat: Tallies twice in win

Horvat scored two goals on four shots, added five hits and blocked two shots in Monday's 3-1 win over the Blue Jackets.

Horvat's second tally came on the power play. This was his third multi-point effort in January, and he's earned six goals and two assists over eight contests this month. The 29-year-old center is up to 16 goals, 35 points (five on the power play), 134 shots on net, 57 hits and a plus-11 rating over 45 appearances.

  • Islanders' Noah Dobson: Could miss time

Dobson does not have a timetable to return from his lower-body injury, according to Stefen Rosner of NHL.com.

Dobson was injured Monday versus Columbus, as he fell in an awkward fashion in the final frame and did not return. The right-shot blueliner will likely be sidelined for the near future given the nature of how his injury looked. Dennis Cholowski will draw back into the lineup while Dobson is on the shelf.

  • Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Concedes once in win

Sorokin allowed just one goal on 26 shots in a 3-1 victory over Columbus on Monday.

Sorokin certainly bounced back from his previous appearances, a 5-3 defeat to the Flyers on Jan. 16 in which he gave up four goals on 23 shots (.826 save percentage). It's been a solid January for the Russian netminder, as he is 3-2-0 with a .921 save percentage and one shutout in five outings. Sorokin should be expected to split the upcoming back-to-back with Marcus Hogberg, taking on either the Flyers on Friday or the Hurricanes on Saturday.

  • Islanders' Noah Dobson: Sustains injury Monday

Dobson suffered an undisclosed injury in the third period of Monday's 3-1 win over the Blue Jackets, per Andrew Gross of Newsday.

Dobson was injured on his first shift in the final frame as a result of an awkward fall after being hit by Columbus' Cole Sillinger. Dobson registered a power-play assist, two shots on goal and four hits in 15:38 of ice time before departing. Head coach Patrick Roy had no update on the 25-year-old's status after the game, which puts him in the day-to-day category ahead of Friday's divisional matchup against the Flyers.

  • Islanders' Alexander Romanov: Playing versus Columbus

Romanov (upper body) will be in the lineup Monday versus the Blue Jackets, per Andrew Gross of Newsday.

Romanov was a game-time call heading into Monday's contest, which was likely maintenance-related, as the left-shot blueliner saw 23:26 of ice time in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Sharks. The 25-year-old will skate on the No. 1 pairing beside Noah Dobson against Columbus.

  • Islanders' Alexander Romanov: Game-time call, likely to play

Romanov (upper body) is considered a game-time decision for Monday's matchup against the Blue Jackets, but head coach Patrick Roy expects him to play, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

Romanov was also a game-time decision for Saturday's matchup against the Sharks, but he returned from a three-game absence and recorded five blocked shots and two hits in 23:26 of ice time. He participated in Monday's morning skate, so he appears to be trending in the right direction and will likely be available for a second consecutive game.

  • Islanders' Pierre Engvall: Slumping once again

Engvall was held off the scoresheet for the ninth straight game in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Sharks.

His 12:06 of ice time Saturday was his second-most in any game during the drought. Engvall has been confined to the fourth line, which isn't going to help him break his slump. He's likely to stick in the lineup through the duration of Maxim Tsyplakov's suspension, but Engvall could find himself as a healthy scratch again in the near future. Engvall does have a little security -- he needs waivers to be sent to AHL Bridgeport, though it's unlikely any other team would place a claim on a player with seven points over 30 outings who has five more years left on his contract following 2024-25.

  • Islanders' Adam Pelech: Collects helper in Saturday's win

Pelech notched an assist, two hits and three blocked shots in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Sharks.

Pelech ended a five-game slump with the helper on a Brock Nelson tally in the second period. For the season, Pelech has eight assists, 52 shots on net, 39 hits and 39 blocked shots through 25 contests. The 30-year-old remains in a top-four role on defense, but he's more of a shutdown player than a scorer.

  • Islanders' Anthony Duclair: Picks up assist Saturday

Duclair notched an assist and went plus-2 in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Sharks.

Duclair had three points over three contests following his return from a lower-body injury, but he followed it up with an eight-game slump. That drought ended Saturday when he set up Ryan Pulock's third-period tally. Between Duclair's long-term absence and a middle-six role, his first season as an Islander hasn't gone well so far. He has seven points, 22 shots on net and a minus-4 rating over 17 appearances.

  • Islanders' Kyle Palmieri: Picks up apple Saturday

Palmieri generated an assist, blocked three shots and went plus-2 in Saturday's 4-1 win over San Jose.

Palmieri set up Brock Nelson's 13th goal of the campaign at 10:42 of the second period. Palmieri has recorded an assist in back-to-back outings, but he hasn't found the back of the net since Dec. 23, a span of 10 games. For the season, the right-shot winger has accounted for 12 goals, 29 points and a minus-9 rating through 45 appearances. Palmieri is on pace to finish right around the 54 points he produced in 2023-24.

  • Islanders' Ryan Pulock: Chips in goal in home win

Pulock scored a goal on two shots and went plus-2 in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Sharks.

Pulock capped the scoring in Saturday's contest, beating Alexandar Georgiev with a slap shot from the blue line at 1:03 of the third period. Pulock is on pace for his highest offensive output since 2019-20, but his level of production still isn't enough to earn fantasy consideration in most formats. The right-shot defenseman has chipped in three goals, 13 helpers and a plus-5 rating through 45 appearances in 2024-25. In addition to his second-pairing role, Pulock is currently manning the No. 2 power-play unit.

  • Islanders' Noah Dobson: Snaps goal drought Saturday

Dobson recorded a goal on three shots, two hits, one takeaway and one blocked shot in a team-high 24:30 of ice time Saturday in a 4-1 win over San Jose.

Dobson registered his sixth goal of the campaign at even strength when he ripped a slap shot from the point past Alexandar Georgiev just over a minute into the final stanza. This was Dobson's first marker since Dec. 21 against Toronto. The right-shot blueliner could still surpass his 10 goals from last season, but he's on pace to fall well short of the 60 helpers he produced in 2023-24. Dobson's at six goals, 23 points, 16 PIM, 141 shots on goal, 38 hits, 81 blocked shots and a minus-8 rating through 45 appearances in 2024-25.

  • Islanders' Brock Nelson: Two points in victory

Nelson netted a goal on four shots, logged an assist and went plus-2 in Saturday's 4-1 over San Jose.

This was Nelson's third multi-point effort in his last five games, as he's notched three goals, four helpers and a plus-5 rating over that stretch. The left-shot center scored his 13th goal of the campaign in the middle frame before adding an assist on Ryan Pulock's third tally of the season early in the third. Nelson has been subject to trade speculation as a result of the Islanders' struggles this season, and he could be a solid addition for a contending team -- the 33-year-old potted at least 34 goals in each of the previous three campaigns. Nelson's well short of that pace with 13 goals and 28 points through 45 appearances in 2024-25.

  • Islanders' Mathew Barzal: Tickles twine and slides apple

Barzal registered a goal on three shots, an assist and a plus-2 rating in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Sharks.

Barzal collected both of his points in the second period Saturday, as he opened the scoring at 8:47 before setting up Noah Dobson's sixth goal of the season with under a minute left. Barzal is enjoying his most productive stretch of the campaign, having accumulated three goals, five helpers and a plus-8 rating through seven outings in January. The right-shot forward played alongside Bo Horvat for much of 2023-24, but head coach Patrick Roy has separated the two at even strength for most of this season. Barzal has struggled at times as a result, but he's found success on the top line lately with Brock Nelson and Anders Lee.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Playing at high level in January

Hogberg made 18 saves on 19 shots in Saturday's 4-1 win over San Jose.

Hogberg conceded a weak goal to Barclay Goodrow midway through the second period, but that was all that got past the Swede on Saturday. Hogberg has allowed exactly one marker in three consecutive games, posting a 2-1-0 record, .955 save percentage and 1.01 GAA in that span. He has earned a larger share of the crease lately due to Semyon Varlamov (lower body) remaining without a timetable to return. The 30-year-old Hogberg owns a 2-2-0 record, .952 save percentage and 1.32 GAA through six appearances in 2024-25.

  • Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Starting Monday

Sorokin will start at home Monday against the Blue Jackets, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports.

Sorokin will look to bounce back after allowing four goals on 23 shots in a loss to the Flyers in his last outing. Overall, the 29-year-old netminder is 13-14-4 with a .900 save percentage and 2.87 GAA this season. Sorokin will face a Columbus team that's averaging 3.30 goals per game, the seventh-best mark in the league.
