Coach Dan Quinn suggested Wednesday that Dotson hasn't locked down the No. 2 receiver job, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Quinn said the Commanders are "in the middle of" a search for their No. 2 receiver, with John Keim of ESPN.com noting that Olamide Zaccheaus has been more consistent than Dotson in training camp. This may seem surprising given that Dotson was a first-round pick in 2022 and had a promising rookie season, but he was one of the least efficient starting WRs in the league last year in terms of both per-target and per-route production. He then played most of the first half in Washington's preseason opener against the Jets on Saturday, whereas sure-thing starters like QB Jayden Daniels and WR Terry McLaurin mostly were removed after the first drive. Dotson did get a lot of slot work against the Jets, suggesting he could settle in as the No. 3 receiver (and quite possibly draw more targets than Zaccheaus or whoever else is considered the No. 2).

Commanders' Jahan Dotson: Optimistic about Kingsbury's offense

Dotson recently told reporters it's been "really nice" having a simplified approach under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
Dotson wasn't a good fit under former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, whose scheme emphasized screen passes and other quick throws that relied on yards after the catch. That's not Dotson's strength, nor did it help that Sam Howell was one of the least accurate QBs on deep passes. Kingsbury and No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels may prove to be better fits for Dotson, but it would still be unwise to completely ignore his 2023 struggles. Out of 81 qualified wide receivers, he was 73rd in yards per target (6.2), 77th in yards per route (0.79), 78th in YAC average (2.1) and 78th in target rate (12.7 percent). Dotson had five more yards and three more TDs in five fewer games back in 2022, when he was the 16th overall draft pick and a Week 1 starter. The upcoming season will be his fifth in a row with a new coordinator/playcaller, dating back to his junior year at Penn State.
Dotson finished 2023 with 49 catches for 518 yards and four touchdowns on 83 targets.
Dotson had more yards (523) and touchdowns (seven) as a rookie in 2022 despite missing five full games and having his snaps limited in two others. He didn't miss any games in his sophomore campaign, but nearly everything else was a disappointment, including his target volume (4.9 per game) and efficiency stats (59.0 percent catch rate, 10.6 yards per catch, 6.2 yards per targe). His catch rate barely rose compared to 2022 -- even though his aDOT sunk from 13.5 to 9.3 -- and his yards after catch (YAC) average dropped from 3.9 to 2.4 (usually it rises when a player sees more short passes and fewer long ones). The main positives here are that Dotson never got benched, playing 82.2 percent of Washington's snaps on offense, and may now head into his third NFL season with a new head coach and new starting quarterback. The 2022 first-round pick nonetheless figures to come off the board much later in 2024 fantasy drafts than he did this past summer, with the down season in Year 2 casting serious doubt upon his future.

While Curtis Samuel (12) and Terry McLaurin (11) saw higher target volumes, Dotson was efficient with his looks as he topped 50 receiving yards for only the third time this season. The second-year wideout has been coming on after an awful start to the year, in large part because Sam Howell is consistently attempting more than 40 passes a game, and over the last five weeks Dotson has a 20-252-3 line on 29 targets, although even that productive stretch includes one game in which he didn't catch a pass at all. Dotson may need to come up big in Week 13 if the Commanders are to have a hope of keeping up with the Dolphins.

Dotson broke out of a pronged slump with 10 catches for 177 yards and two TDs on 18 targets over the previous two weeks, but it's hard to find a silver lining for his goose egg Sunday in a game that saw QB Sam Howell throw for over 300 yards. The second-year wideout handled his usual role in terms of snap share (87 percent) and simply couldn't get anything done against one of the better CB groups in the league. Dotson gets a much better matchup in Week 11, facing the Giants at home, but it's tough to trust him in fantasy lineups given his overall averages of 3.4 catches for 36.0 yards and 0.3 TDs on 5.9 targets per game. He's fallen shy of double-digit PPR points in each of the seven games in which he didn't score a touchdown, and his catch rate (57.6 percent) is nearly identical to last season's despite his aDOT dropping from 13.5 to 9.5 and his yards per reception sliding from 14.9 to 10.6.

It took some time, but Dotson is now producing like the player we hoped for coming into the season. He has 26 targets in his past three games against the Giants, Eagles and Patriots, and he scored at least 16.9 PPR points in each of his past two outings, with two touchdowns in those contests. He's approaching must-start status in all leagues, and hopefully he stays hot against the Seahawks in Week 10. It helps that Seattle has allowed 11 receivers to score at least 13.7 PPR points this year, and this should be a solid week for Dotson and Terry McLaurin against this defense.

He now has 18 targets in his past two games, and Curtis Samuel (toe) is banged up. Terry McLaurin remains the No. 1 receiver for the Commanders and is a must-start Fantasy option, but Dotson is worth trusting again in three-receiver leagues. The Patriots also just allowed three Dolphins receivers (Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Cedrick Wilson) to score touchdowns in Week 8, so McLaurin and Dotson should have the chance to make plays in this matchup.

It's incredibly hard to know what to make of Dotson's best game of the season, especially since it's also … his first good game of the season – he hadn't topped 11 PPR points in any game before Sunday. We know Dotson has talent, as a 2022 first-round pick, but he just hasn't shown that talent often enough this season, and it's not like much changed for Dotson this week besides the results; he played 85% of the snaps Sunday, compared to 84% in Week 7. Of course, the production was incredible, and it's hard to ignore that from a talented player. I don't think Dotson is going to be worth trusting in Week 9 against the Patriots, but he probably should be rostered now, at least. It's worth noting the Eagles have had a lot of injuries in the secondary, and Terry McLaurin still had more targets Sunday.

Dotson is good to go for a favorable matchup against a Chicago defense that has allowed 34.3 points per game through the first four weeks of the season. Dotson has drawn a healthy 25 targets through four games but has yet to exceed 40 yards in any week.
