Browns' Dorian Thompson-Robinson: Won't start Week 8
Thompson-Robinson (finger) won't start Sunday's game against the Ravens, as Jameis Winston is instead on track to step in under center in place of the injured Deshaun Watson (Achilles) in Week 8, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
After slotting third on the depth chart behind Watson and Winston to begin the season, Thompson-Robinson was active as the No. 2 quarterback for this past Sunday's loss to the Bengals, while Winston was inactive as the emergency No. 3 option. Thrust into action when Watson suffered a season-ending ruptured Achilles' tendon late in the second quarter, Thompson-Robinson went on to complete 11 of 24 passes for 82 yards and two interceptions while rushing three times for 44 yards before leaving in the fourth quarter with a tendon injury to the middle finger on his throwing hand. Winston took the field for the Browns' final drive and will now draw the start Week 8, but Thompson-Robinson could be a candidate to supplant him once he makes a full recovery from the injury. The finger issue won't require surgery and isn't considered a major concern for Thompson-Robinson, who could still be available in a backup capacity Sunday. The Browns signed Bailey Zappe on Tuesday, giving the team another option to back up Winston if Thompson-Robinson isn't healthy enough to do so.

Browns' Deshaun Watson: Surgery set for Friday
Watson is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday to repair his ruptured right Achilles' tendon, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
He'll have the procedure overseen by Packers team physician Dr. Robert Anderson, who specializes in foot and ankle orthopedic surgeries. According to Cabot, Watson will be facing a nine-month recovery, which should put him on pace to be close to 100 percent before the start of the 2025 season. Though Watson is still on the Browns' books through the 2026 season after signing a five-year extension for $230 million guaranteed in March 2022, his poor play and inability to stay on the field over his first three seasons in Cleveland could prompt the team to go in a different direction at quarterback in 2025, even if he's fully healthy.

Browns' Za'Darius Smith: Registers fourth sack of 2024
Smith tallied two tackles (one solo), including 1.0 sacks, during Sunday's 21-14 loss to the Bengals.
Smith took down Joe Burrow for a seven-yard loss midway through the second quarter, which forced the Bengals to punt the ball away on the next play. Smith logged 5.5 sacks through 16 regular-season games in 2023, but he's already up to 4.0 sacks through the first seven games of the 2024 campaign.

Browns' Jameis Winston: Expected to start Sunday
The Browns plan to have Winston start at quarterback in Sunday's game against the Ravens, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reports.
Winston was inactive as the Browns' emergency No. 3 quarterback for last Sunday's loss to the Bengals, but he'll move into the starting role a week later with Deshaun Watson (Achilles) suffering a season-ending injury and with Dorian Thompson-Robinson (finger) uncertain to be available. After Watson was forced out late in the first half of the loss to the Bengals and after Thompson-Robinson exited late in the fourth quarter, Winston directed the Browns' final drive of the day, completing five of 11 pass attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown. It took seven regular-season games, but Harris finally go this first sack of the year Sunday, as he took down Joe Burrow for a five-yard loss late in the first quarter that caused the Bengals to turn the ball over on downs. Harris' 28 defensive snaps were his lowest since Week 2 against the Jaguars, and he could see sub-30 snaps on defense moving forward after rookie second-rounder Michael Hall returned from a five-game suspension in Week 6.

Browns' Dorian Thompson-Robinson: Likely to avoid multi-week absence
Thompson-Robinson is dealing with a injured tendon on the middle finger of his throwing hand, but the Browns don't believe he'll miss multiple weeks due to the issue, Brad Stainbrook of 247Sports.com reports.
While Thompson-Robinson thus appears on track to avoid a stint on injured reserve after X-rays on the finger returned negative, the second-year quarterback's status for Sunday's game against the Ravens is still in flux. Whether or not Thompson-Robinson is available to play this weekend will likely hinge on his ability to throw the football with accuracy and at normal velocity, according to Stainbrook. After starter Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury late in the second quarter of this past Sunday's loss to the Bengals, Thompson-Robinson came off the bench and completed 11 of 24 pass attempts for 82 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 44 yards on three carries before he was lifted from the contest in the fourth quarter with the injury.
