  • Anders Carlson: Cut by Niners

The 49ers cut Carlson from their practice squad Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Carlson's release likely signals that the 49ers are expecting Jake Moody (ankle) to return from a three-game absence to handle kicking duties coming out of a Week 9 bye. Carlson filled in for Moody in Weeks 7 and 8, going 5-for-5 on field-goal attempts and 3-for-4 on extra-point tries.

  • 49ers' Anders Carlson: Reverts to practice squad

Carlson reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday.

Carlson went 3-for-3 on both field-goal attempts and extra-point tries during Sunday's win over the Cowboys, as he once again served as the team's kicker since Jake Moody (ankle) remains sidelined. Carlson should continue to serve as the 49ers' placekicker in a Week 10 matchup versus Tampa Bay following the Week 9 bye if Moody is unable to return.

  • 49ers' Anders Carlson: Perfect for 12 points

Carlson went 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts and 3-for-3 on extra-point tries in Sunday's 30-24 victory over Dallas.

Carlson filled in at placekicker for the second week in a row and turned in his finest game as a pro. The sophomore kicker was perfect on all six of his attempts for an offense that moved the ball freely against Dallas. Carlson may lose his starting job when Jake Moody (ankle) returns from injury. With San Francisco entering its bye in Week 9, its probably safe to put Carlson back on the wire if you managed to benefit from Sunday's career performance.

  • 49ers' Anders Carlson: Bumps up for Week 8 action

The 49ers elevated Carlson from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, in preparation for him to start Sunday's game against the Cowboys, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Carlson will get another chance to start for San Francisco due to Jake Moody (ankle) being ruled out for Week 8 and Matthew Wright (shoulder) on injured reserve. Carlson, a second-year pro, converted both of his field-goal tries Week 7 against the Chiefs, but he missed his lone extra-point attempt.

  • 49ers' Anders Carlson: Moves back to practice squad

Carlson reverted to the 49ers' practice squad Monday.

Carlson is getting a second chance in the NFL due to multiple injuries to kickers in San Francisco. While he netted both field-goal attempts (55 and 24 yards) during Sunday's loss to the Chiefs, he wasn't without his foibles, missing his only point-after try. With Matthew Wright (shoulder) on injured reserve and with head coach Kyle Shanahan telling Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News on Monday that Jake Moody (ankle) won't be available to return Week 8 against the Cowboys, Carlson again will serve as the 49ers' placekicker this coming weekend.

  • 49ers' Anders Carlson: Kicks two FGs on Sunday

Carlson went 2-for-2 on field-goal attempts and missed his only point-after try in Sunday's 28-18 loss to the Chiefs.

Carlson made his debut for the 49ers on Sunday and made kicks from 24 and 55 yards out. The former Packers placekicker missed his only PAT, and it was a so-so debut from a fantasy standpoint. If Jake Moody (ankle) is unable to suit up for Sunday's tilt against the Cowboys, Carlson would likely earn another start with San Francisco.

  • 49ers' Anders Carlson: Elevated to active roster

Carlson was elevated to the active roster Saturday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

This was presumed with the injuries to both Jake Moody (ankle) and Matthew Wright (shoulder/back) in consecutive weeks. Carlson was one of the league's worst kickers during the 2023 regular season in terms of extra-point conversion (34 of 39), and he also missed six of his 13 field-goal attempts from 40-plus yards out for the Packers. It'll be interesting to see if the second-year kicker can correct those issues with his second lease on life in the NFL.

  • 49ers' Anders Carlson: To be elevated Saturday

The 49ers are expected to elevate Carlson from the practice squad Saturday in advance of Sunday's contest against the Chiefs, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

San Francisco lost Jake Moody to a right high-ankle sprain Week 5 and Matthew Wright to shoulder and back injuries Week 6. The former is in line to miss about one month, while the latter is slated to be placed on injured reserve Saturday, setting up Carlson to be the team's placekicker Sunday and likely a few more contests after that. A sixth-round pick of the Packers in 2023, Carlson got just one campaign as the regular kicker in Green Bay due to frequent misses (27-for-33 on FGAs, 34-for-39 on PATs in 17 regular-season games) and didn't win a job battle out of training camp. He'll have a chance to bounce back working in conjunction with the 49ers offense.

  • Anders Carlson: Joins Niners' practice squad

San Francisco signed Carlson to its practice squad Tuesday, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Carlson was waived by the Packers prior to the beginning of the regular season after a shaky rookie year in 2023, but at least on paper, he might have a chance to see game action in 2024 anyway. If both Jake Moody (ankle) and Matthew Wright (shoulder) are unable to suit up Sunday, Carlson could be elevated from the practice squad to serve as San Francisco's starting kicker versus the Chiefs.

  • Anders Carlson: Cut loose by Packers

The Packers waived Carlson on Tuesday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.

Carlson missed seven field-goal attempts and six extra-point tries in 19 games last season, including playoffs, failing to meet expectations after Green Bay took him in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. The Packers have since brought in Greg Joseph and Alex Hale for competition, with Joseph now seemingly set to enter Week 1 as the team's placekicker. Carlson is unlikely to find a starting job elsewhere but could get a spot on a practice squad, possibly even back in Green Bay.

  • Packers' Anders Carlson: Perfect in opener

Carlson made two field goals and an extra point in Saturday's preseason opener against the Browns.

Accuracy was an issue for Carlson in his rookie season but not Saturday, as he made field goals from 46 and 33 yards as well as his lone extra-point attempt. Carlson remains locked in a competition with Greg Joseph for Green Bay's kicker job, and although the latter has fared a bit better during training camp, Carlson still has the advantage of having been selected by Green Bay in the sixth round of the 2023 draft.

  • Packers' Anders Carlson: In danger of losing job?

Fellow kicker Greg Joseph has been more accurate than Carlson during open practices this summer, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.

The Packers brought in veteran competition this offseason after Carlson, a 2023 sixth-round pick, missed seven field-goal attempts and six PATs in 19 games (including playoffs) during his rookie campaign. Joseph has made 29 of 31 kicks in practices open to reporters at training camp, while Carlson is 25-for-31. That said, Joseph was also far from spectacular last year, going 24-for-30 on field-goal attempts for the division-rival Vikings -- his third straight year missing at least five FGAs.
