Player Outlook
The fourth overall pick in 2019, J.J. Bleday has struggled to find his footing so far in the big leagues. After a disappointing debut with the Marlins in 2022, he was traded last offseason in exchange for A.J. Puk. Bleday got the call to Oakland in May and went on to slash .195/.310/.355 with 10 homers and five steals in 82 games before missing most of the final two months with a left ACL sprain. He showed some good things last season, including quality pitch selection which led to a 13.9 BB%. However, Bleday has a baffling .222 BABIP in 147 career games in the majors, and his poor batted-ball numbers show it's not all bad luck. While there may be something here, he currently projects as the fourth outfielder for the A's. Most will want to wait and see until he finds his way into regular at-bats before adding him to a fantasy roster.

Bleday went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Saturday in a loss to the Twins. The homer was Bleday's 11th of the campaign, establishing a new career-best mark. The center fielder has also posted a career-high 28 RBI, 22 doubles and three triples while scoring 35 runs and slashing .256/.341/.472 through 319 plate appearances.

He's added 10 home runs, 27 RBI, 32 runs scored, 22 doubles and three triples over 75 contests, but he's yet to steal a base. Bleday went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run in a loss to the Padres on Wednesday. Both of Bleday's hits were singles, but Wednesday marked his second straight game reaching safely on three occasions after a brief 0-for-13 slump that had encompassed his previous three contests. Bleday has pushed his on-base percentage back up to a solid .326 with his frequent trips on the basepaths the last two nights, and he's also carrying a 19.6 percent strikeout rate.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Delivers walk-off blast

Bleday went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. Bleday's blast was the Athletics' fifth hit of the game, but it was enough to earn a walk-off win. The outfielder is batting .294 (10-for-34) over his last nine contests, but this was his first homer since May 24. For the season, he's at a .246/.328/.469 slash line with nine long balls, 23 RBI, 26 runs scored, 18 doubles, three triples and no stolen bases over 65 games.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Goes deep again Friday

Bleday went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, a double and three total runs scored in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Astros. Bleday has found his swing with a homer in three straight games and a seven-game hitting streak. During that latter stretch, he's gone 9-for-33 (.273) with eight extra-base hits. The outfielder is slashing .247/.317/.478 with eight homers, 22 RBI, 21 runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples and no stolen bases over 206 plate appearances this season. Bleday's held a starting role all season, and that's not going to change while he's swinging a hot bat.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Game-tying homer Thursday

Bleday went 1-for-6 with a two-run home run in an extra-innings win over the Rockies on Thursday. Bleday stepped to the plate in the 11th with the Athletics having already cut a four-run deficit in half, and he delivered with a 409-foot shot to center to knot the score at 9-9. It was the second consecutive game in which Bleday left the yard, and the clutch homer also extended the outfielder's hitting streak to six games. Bleday has impressively laced 23 of his 44 hits for extra bases this season, and all three components of his .243/.315/.459 slash line are career bests.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: On base three times in loss

Bleday went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and a run in a loss to the Royals on Sunday. Bleday has put together an extended stretch of productive performances at the plate, recording a .267/.353/.483 slash line with four multi-hit efforts, nine XBH and nine RBI across the 69 plate appearances covering his last 16 games.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Resting against lefty

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Drives in four Saturday

Bleday went 3-for-5 with an RBI double, a three-run home run, a walk and an additional run in a win over the Marlins on Saturday. Bleday was one of several Athletics hitters to put on a lights-out performance in the 20-4 rout, continuing a recent trend of improved play at the expense of the organization that drafted him in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft in 2019. Bleday has now left the yard on three occasions in the last four games, and the three-hit day tied a season best. Bleday coaxed his OPS to .775 with the prolific afternoon, with the fact he's laced 13 of his 28 hits on the campaign for extra bases playing a key role.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: On base thrice in win

Bleday went 1-for-2 with a double and two walks in a win over the Pirates on Monday. Bleday, who opened the season as one of the Athletics' more consistent bats, had ironically been mired in a downturn during Oakland's recent improved stretch of play. Bleday entered Monday just 3-for-18 over the previous seven contests, but his three trips on the basepaths Tuesday represented a welcome uptick. Bleday also now has four two-baggers in the last six games, although he's now gone 24 games without a home run.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Idle against southpaw

Bleday isn't in the Athletics' lineup for Saturday's game against Cleveland. The lefty-hitting Bleday will take a seat as left-hander Logan Allen prepares to start on the mound for the Guardians. Esteury Ruiz will take over in center field and bat in the leadoff spot.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Sitting versus lefty

Bleday is out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest versus the Cardinals. The left-handed-hitting Bleday will take a seat as St. Louis goes with southpaw Steven Matz as its starting pitcher. Esteury Ruiz will cover center field for the Athletics in the series finale while Bleday hits the bench.

Bleday went 1-for-3 with two walks and a two-run home run in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Red Sox. Bleday put the A's ahead 4-3 in the third inning with a two-run shot off Brayan Bello, his first homer of the year. The 26-year-old Bleday has gotten off to a fast start this season, going 8-for-23 with four extra-base hits out of the No. 3 spot in Oakland's lineup. Bleday slashed .195/.310/.355 with 10 homers and 27 RBI in 256 at-bats in 2023.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Standout day in Cactus League win

Bleday went 2-for-3 with a two-run triple, a solo home run and an additional run in the Athletics' Cactus League win over the Giants on Wednesday. Bleday drew the start in center field and snapped the three-game hitless stretch he'd opened Cactus League play with in spectacular fashion. A first-round pick of the Marlins in the 2019 First-Year Player Draft, Bleday landed in the A's organization a season ago and slashed .195/.310/.355 with 21 extra-base hits and 27 RBI across 82 games with the big-league club. His body of work at Triple-A Las Vegas was much more noteworthy -- he posted a .333 average and 1.111 OPS over 133 plate appearances with the Aviators -- but Bleday should have a solid chance to break camp with Oakland and open the season as a reserve option across all three outfield positions.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: First hit since IL activation

Bleday went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run in a win over the Twins on Thursday. Bleday was playing in only his second game since returning from a stay on the injured list due to a knee sprain. After going hitless Wednesday, he got on base for the first time since Aug. 13, the last game he'd played prior to his absence. With the Athletics due to face right-handers Chase Silseth and Davis Daniel in the first two games of a season-ending weekend series against the Angels, the lefty-hitting Bleday should be set for another two starts in 2023 before potentially taking a seat against southpaw Kenny Rosenberg on Sunday.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Activated from injured list

Bleday (knee) was activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Bleday has been sidelined since mid-August with an ACL sprain in his left knee, but he'll be available for the Athletics this week after appearing in a few rehab contests. The 25-year-old should see playing time, at least against righties down the stretch.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Stands out while playing full game

Bleday (knee) took a full game's worth of plate appearances as the designated hitter in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over Reno on Saturday, going 3-for-4 with a double, a solo home run, three total RBI and a walk. Bleday's night couldn't have gone much better, as the recovering outfielder continued to corroborate the improving health of his knee by suiting up for a second straight day. Bleday logged seven innings in the outfield during his rehab debut Friday night and reached safely twice in that contest, so he appears to be trending firmly in the right direction in all aspects. Bleday may be deemed to need only one more game with the Aviators before potentially being activated ahead of Tuesday's series opener against the Twins.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Kicks off rehab stint

Bleday (knee) started in left field in Triple-A Las Vegas' loss to Reno on Friday night and played seven innings, going 1-for-3 with a walk. Bleday had a solid showing all the way around in his first rehab game, getting in an extended stint on defense while providing some offense as well. The outfielder may need only a couple more games down on the farm before he's deemed ready for activation, which would enable him to get in multiple games at the big-league level before the conclusion of the regular season Oct. 1.
