Player Outlook
Toro was dealt to Milwaukee last winter but played in just nine big-league games during 2023, though he took advantage of those opportunities by going 8-for-18 with two homers. The 28-year-old was then traded to the A's in November, which provides an immediate boost to his outlook for playing time in 2024. Toro also had a strong campaign at the Triple-A level last year with a .291/.374/.471 slash line and 10 home runs in 96 games. He has a .636 OPS in 271 big-league games during his career and isn't guaranteed playing time in Oakland, so a wait-and-see approach is likely appropriate rather than risking draft capital outside of a late-round dart throw.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Sidelined through All-Star break

Toro (hamstring) will be out at least through the All-Star break, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Toro landed on the injured list Saturday due to a Grade 1 strain of his right hamstring, and the A's have already determined that his absence will extend into the second half of the season. Tyler Nevin figures to see the majority of reps at third base until Toro returns, though Aledmys Diaz and Armando Alvarez may also pick up a few starts.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Lands on IL with strained hamstring

The Athletics placed Toro on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to a strained right hamstring. Toro returned to the lineup Friday after missing the three previous games due to a shoulder strain. He went 1-for-3 with a run and a walk in Friday's 6-5 win over the Twins, but he was replaced by Tyler Nevin in the top of the seventh inning due to the hamstring strain. Nevin and Aledmys Diaz should see increased playing time with Toro sidelined, as could Armando Alvarez, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.

Toro suffered a strained hamstring Friday and will be placed on the injured list, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Back in lineup Friday

Toro (shoudler) is starting at third base and hitting in the leadoff spot for Friday's series opener against the Twins. Shoulder soreness kept Toro out of the starting lineup in the Athletics' last three games, though he did pinch hit in the seventh inning of Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Royals. On the season, Toro is slashing .259/.300/.387 with 15 doubles, six home runs and 24 RBI over 291 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Sees action as in-game replacement

Toro (shoulder) entered Thursday's loss to the Royals as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning and remained in the game at third base, recording a double in his only plate appearance. Toro was out of the starting nine for the third straight game due to shoulder soreness, but his ability to make some hard contact and then stay in the game on defense implies he may be ready to return to the lineup Friday. The veteran's pinch-hit, two-out two-bagger Thursday had the potential to generate Toro's 25th RBI of the campaign and snap a 2-2 tie, but Kyle McCann was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the frame.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Sitting out Thursday

Toro (shoulder) is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals. Toro will miss out on a third consecutive start while he recovers from a sore shoulder, an injury that first cropped up in the Athletics' doubleheader with the Twins on Sunday. Aledmys Diaz will fill in at third base Thursday for Toro, who is considered day-to-day.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Belts first-pitch homer

Toro went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Padres. Toro got the game started right for the Athletics, taking Randy Vasquez's first pitch of the contest out to center field. The homer was Toro's sixth of the year, but his first since May 21. He's gone 6-for-26 (.231) over his last six games, though he's maintained steady playing time at third base and atop the order. He's slashing .268/.311/.402 with 24 RBI, 31 runs scored, 14 doubles, one triple and three stolen bases through 66 contests.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Plates pair in Sunday's loss

Toro went 1-for-5 with a two-run single in an extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday. Toro erased a 2-1 deficit in the seventh inning with a bloop single that plated Tyler Soderstrom and Aledmys Diaz. Toro has hit safely in four straight games, although he's also uncharacteristically struck out seven times over that span. Nevertheless, Toro appears to have a firm hold of a leadoff spot and is carrying a solid .269 average and .708 OPS across 261 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Supplies game-winning home run

Toro went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Rockies. Since April 26, Toro is slashing .362/.406/.553 with three homers, 10 RBI, 17 runs and a 4:16 BB:K in 101 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Goes deep in loss

Toro went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Mariners. Toro launched his fourth home run of the year to begin the sixth off Luis Castillo. It's a continuation of what's been a ridiculously hot stretch at the plate for Toro. Over his last 16 games, the 27-year-old is slashing .410/.455/.607 with two homers, nine RBI and 12 runs scored. He has led off in six straight games, all against righties, and has been more of a middle-of-the-order hitter against southpaws. For the season, Toro is now slashing .299/.351/.460 with 13 extra-base hits, 17 RBI, 20 runs and a 7:26 BB:K in 148 plate appearances.

Toro extended Oakland's lead to 9-0 in the third inning with his timely single, pushing his RBI total to 13 to draw him into a tie with JJ Bleday for third place on the Athletics. The 27-year-old has been a steady offensive presence for the surprising A's, and he's now posted four consecutive two-hit tallies as part of an eight-game hitting streak overall.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: Clubs third homer

Toro went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Pirates. Getting the start at second base and batting fifth, Toro launched a second-inning Quinn Priester sinker up in the zone off the top of the wall in center field. Toro has hit safely in six straight games, and he's making a case to be an everyday player for Oakland -- through 99 plate appearances, he's slashing .264/.323/.440 with three homers, 11 RBI and 11 runs. He's played at least three games at first base, second base and third base so far in 2024 in addition to spotting in at DH, and while Ryan Noda's demotion to Triple-A after Wednesday's game likely has more to do with J.D. Davis (thigh) being nearly ready to come off the IL, it does give Toro a little less competition for playing time.

Toro is starting at second base and batting sixth for Wednesday's outing against the Yankees. The switch-hitting infielder was originally left out of the starting nine for Wednesday's matchup, but he will take the field and make his first start at second base after Zack Gelof (abdomen) was scratched. After he had started at designated hitter or third base in 14 consecutive contests, Toro has now hit the bench for the second day in a row. Tyler Nevin will draw another start at the hot corner and may have supplanted Toro as manager Mark Kotsay's preferred option at the position while the Athletics wait for J.D. Davis (adductor) to return from the injured list.

Toro is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees. Toro started the previous 14 games but will take a seat after he posted a .686 OPS during that stretch. Tyler Nevin will man the hot corner while Esteury Ruiz bats leadoff for the A's.

  • Athletics' Abraham Toro: First triple since '22

Toro went 1-for-4 with a triple in a loss to the Guardians on Saturday. The three-bagger not only extended Toro's modest hitting streak to three games, it also served as his first such hit since June 2, 2022 while with the Mariners. Toro has now started 12 consecutive games at either third base or designated hitter, and while his .254/.323/.424 slash line is solid but not remarkable, it passes for one of the better ones on a struggling Oakland offense.
