Player Outlook
Brent Rooker went from being designated for assignment by the Royals in November of 2022 to becoming a bona fide breakout slugger for the Athletics in 2023. He was one of only 29 major leaguers to reach the 30-homer plateau and he posted the 14th-highest OPS (.817) among all qualified American League hitters. Rooker strikes out often and is probably never going to be a good source for batting average, but his power stroke sure appears to be a bankable asset. He finished in the 93rd percentile last year in barrel percentage and was in the 91st percentile in hard-hit rate. The 29-year-old is going to have to make a lot of noise on his own as part of a mostly punchless Oakland offense, but that poor supporting cast at least assures him everyday at-bats in a fruitful lineup spot.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Plates pair in Wednesday's win

Rooker went 2-for-3 with two RBI singles and a walk in a win over the Royals on Wednesday. Rooker's timely hitting led to two of the Athletics' five runs, with the veteran driving home JJ Bleday in the third and seventh innings with his pair of singles. Rooker has now hit safely in eight of his last 10 games, but a 42.9 percent strikeout rate has helped lead to a lackluster .211/.262/.368 slash line in that same span.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: On bench for Game 2

Rooker is not in the starting lineup for the nightcap of Sunday's doubleheader with the Twins, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Rooker will take a seat after he went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in the team's 6-2 Game 1 loss. Miguel Andujar will slot in at designated hitter while Seth Brown enters the lineup in right field and bats seventh against Minnesota.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Laces triple in loss

Rooker went 1-for-5 with an RBI triple in an extra-inning loss to the Twins on Friday. Rooker's seventh-inning three-bagger plated JJ Bleday to snap a 4-4 tie, giving the Athletics a temporary reprieve after they'd blown an early 4-0 lead. The triple was Rooker's second of the season -- a new career high -- and marked his first extra-base hit since June 4. The veteran outfielder has now hit safely in five of his last seven games, but he's also carrying a .172 average and 43.3 percent strikeout rate across the 30 plate appearances he's logged in that span.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Getting day off amid slump

Rooker is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres. Rooker will cede designated hitter duties to JJ Bleday and get a breather for the series finale after he had started in each of the Athletics' last 14 games. During that stretch, Rooker slashed just .196/.281/.392 with a 40.4 percent strikeout rate, so the day off could prove beneficial while he's in the midst of a slump at the dish.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Slugs 13th homer Sunday

Rooker went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in an extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays on Sunday. Rooker squared up for his 13th homer in the sixth inning, a 436-foot shot that cut a 2-0 deficit in half. The veteran outfielder has hit safely in three straight games, and he's now popped nine extra-base hits and driven in 12 runs over his last 19 contests on his way to an .851 OPS in that span.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Reaches twice in shutout loss

Rooker went 1-for-3 with a walk in a loss to the Blue Jays on Saturday. The Athletics managed only five hits -- all singles -- against a masterful Kevin Gausman in the shutout loss, so Rooker had what could be termed a relatively successful night in that context. The 29-year-old has been one of the Athletics' more consistent bats over the first two months-plus of the season yet is off to an uneven start to June -- he's recorded a double, triple, home run and four RBI, but he's also hitting just .217 overall (5-for-23) while striking out at a 33.3 percent clip.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Plates four in high-scoring win

Rooker went 2-for-5 with a two-run double and a two-run home run in a win over Atlanta on Saturday. Rooker extended the Athletics' lead to 8-3 via his 421-foot blast in the fourth inning with Max Schuemann aboard, and he then erased a 9-8 deficit in the sixth by bringing home Miguel Andujar and Schuemann with a timely two-bagger. The pair of extra-base hits pushed Rooker's total in that category to 24 (out of 49 total hits), and he's now reached safely in 12 straight games while getting on at a stellar .388 clip in that span.

Rooker went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and two runs scored in Sunday's loss to Kansas City. Rooker belted a three-run shot in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough for the Athletics to mount a late comeback. It was his first homer since May 12, though six of his 11 long balls this year have come in May. Rooker is following up his 30-homer breakout season nicely, posting a .281/.358/.578 slash line with 18 extra-base hits and 32 RBI through 151 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Homers, plates two in loss

Rooker went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's loss to the Mariners. Rooker stayed hot at the plate with his fourth multi-hit effort in his last five games and second home run over that span as well. Since the start of May, Rooker is slashing .441/.525/.882 with four homers, 12 RBI, 11 runs and a 6:7 BB:K in 40 plate appearances. He's now up to 10 long balls on the year and is one of 10 players with double-digit home runs thus far. Rooker also owns a .632 slugging percentage and 1.012 OPS, both of which would rank third in baseball if he had enough plate appearances to qualify.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Another multi-hit performance

Rooker went 2-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's win over Seattle while also drawing a walk. Rooker singled in each of his first two at-bats, with the latter one driving home Brett Harris to put the A's on top 2-1. The right fielder would also draw a walk in the eighth before stealing second and coming around to score Oakland's fifth run of the game on a Max Schuemann double. Rooker has now hit safely in five straight games and has recorded multiple hits in three of his last four overall, posting one homer, four RBI and five runs scored over that latter stretch.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: On base three times in loss

Rooker went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs in a loss to the Marlins on Sunday. A day after slugging two home runs in the same inning, Rooker laced the only extra-base hit of the afternoon for the Athletics. Rooker's multi-hit effort was his second straight and third in the last eight games, pushing his slash line over the entirety of that span to a spectacular .407/.500/.852 across 32 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Homers twice in third inning

Rooker went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI in Saturday's 20-4 victory over the Marlins. HE became the first Athletics player to homer twice in the same inning since Mark McGwire did it in September of 1996. Rooker did it during Oakland's 10-run third inning Saturday, taking starter Trevor Rogers deep with a two-run shot and then reliever Darren McCaughan over the boards with a three-run blast. He also added a single and a walk. Rooker is up to eight home runs on the season even after going on the injured list last month. Of course, he's also hitting just .240 and striking out at a 36.5 percent rate, but fantasy managers knew what they were getting into with Rooker and should be satisfied with the returns 22 games in.

With Rooker getting a breather Wednesday, Shea Langeliers will get a day off behind the plate and will serve as Oakland's designated hitter.

Rooker (ribs) was activated from the 10-day injured list by the Athletics on Friday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Rooker wound up missing just the minimum 10 days while dealing with an injury to his ribcage area. The 29-year-old has popped a couple home runs in the early going this season but has just a .659 OPS and 16:1 K:BB across 31 plate appearances. Rooker is not in Friday's lineup at Cleveland in his first game back from the IL.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Remains on bench Wednesday

Rooker (abdomen) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers. Rooker will remain on the bench for the second game in a row since exiting Sunday's 7-1 win over Detroit with abdominal soreness. The Athletics continue to view Rooker as day-to-day, but a stint on the injured list could grow more likely if he isn't able to re-enter the lineup by the weekend.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Bat starting to come around

Rooker went 1-for-3 with a run in a Cactus League win over the Angels on Wednesday. The Athletics' primary designated hitter was 0-for-4 through his first two spring games, but he's bounced back to go 4-for-15 with a home run, two RBI, a walk, a stolen base and four runs over his subsequent five exhibitions. Rooker broke out with an out-of-nowhere 30-homer tally in 2023 while playing a career-high 137 games, although a 32.7 percent strikeout rate he'll be looking to significantly shave down this season helped cap his adequate .246 average and encouraging .329 on-base percentage from being even better.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Homers in 2023 finale

Rooker went 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Angels. Rooker capped off his 2023 campaign on a strong note by going perfect at the plate and hitting his 30th home run of the season. The 28-year-old began the year as one of the hottest hitters in baseball before having a brutal hitting stretch during May and June. He maintained more of a steady approach after the All-Star break, slashing .246/.313/.403 with 14 homers, 25 RBI, 29 runs and a 16:80 BB:K in 223 plate appearances. Rooker was one of the few bright spots for a struggling A's team and could be a trade piece for them in the offseason.
