Player Outlook
Christopher Morel had a solid rookie campaign in 2022 with 16 homers and a .741 OPS in 113 games, but he spent the first month-plus of 2023 in the minors. He caught fire immediately upon being promoted by the Cubs and clubbed nine long balls with a 1.354 OPS while collecting hits in each of his first 13 contests. Morel finished the campaign with a .247/.313/.508 slash line, 26 home runs, 70 RBI and 62 runs despite playing in just 107 games. His strikeout rate improved but was still high at 31.0 percent, and his poor defense led to him seeing most of his time at designated hitter. He played six different positions, but second base was his only spot with more than five appearances besides the outfield, limiting his positional eligibility, and he remains without a clear home in the field. Morel made plenty of hard contact with a 50.0 percent hard-hit rate and 15.5 percent barrel, but the strikeouts make him a bit of a volatile fantasy option, especially since he's yet to put together a full season.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Provides offense Sunday

Morel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Mets. Morel provided all of Chicago's offense with his 15th home run of the season in the seventh inning. The 24-year-old has hit 15 or more homers in each of his three MLB seasons to date, including a career high 26 long balls last year in 107 games. Assuming he stays healthy, Morel could surpass that figure in 2024 as the team is still a few games shy of the season's midpoint.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Homers, drives in two in win

Morel went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 8-1 win over the Mets. Morel hit an RBI single in the first inning and crushed a 446-foot solo home run in the third. Morel's .209 average so far in June is actually his highest in any month this season, and the homer was his fourth in 19 June games. The 24-year-old is batting just .202 to date but does have 14 home runs and 43 RBI over 267 at-bats in 2024.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Absent from Cubs lineup

Morel is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Giants. Morel has only one hit over his last five games and tough right-hander Logan Webb will take the ball Tuesday for San Francisco, so it's a sensible spot for a day off. David Bote is getting the call at third base while Morel regroups.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Pops 13th home run

Morel went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Rays. Morel connected for this third home run of the month and 13th of the season in the fourth inning. The 24-year-old is now halfway to his long ball total from last year through 66 games. Morel only needed 107 contests to record those 26 homers in 2023, but he seems primed to play more games this season if he stays healthy, and that could result in a new career best in the power department.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Blasts 12th home run

Morel went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Thursday's 8-4 loss to the Reds. Morel can be streaky with his power production, but he appears to be locked in right now, as he has two home runs across his last three games and three in his last seven contests. The surge has pushed him up to 12 long balls for the season. Morel popped 26 home runs last year, and he certainly could reach or surpass that figure in 2024 if he stays healthy.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: In Thursday's lineup

Morel (foot) is starting at third base and batting cleanup Thursday against the Reds. Morel was taken out of Wednesday's game after fouling a ball off his left foot, but he appears to be feeling well enough to return to the Cubs' lineup without a day off. The 24-year-old has posted just a .203 batting average so far this season, but he has been heating up recently, going 6-for-19 with two homers, three RBI and six runs scored across his last six games.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Powers team to win

Morel went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the White Sox. Morel launched his 11th home run of the season and second in the last five games in the sixth inning to spark the Cubs' comeback victory. The 24-year-old has been a bit all or nothing this year, as he's batting just .201; however, his power potential alone should keep him in Chicago's lineup most days and gives him fantasy upside, which he flashed last season with 26 long balls in only 388 at-bats.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: In lineup as DH on Tuesday

Morel (toe) will start at designated hitter and bat cleanup in Tuesday's game in Atlanta. Morel had to exit Monday's contest after fouling a ball off his left foot, but he's fine. It's his first start at DH in more than a week, which will free up third base for Patrick Wisdom on Tuesday.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Back in action Sunday

Morel (knee) will start at third base and bat cleanup Sunday against the Pirates. Morel exited in the fifth inning of Saturday's 10-9 loss to Pittsburgh with right knee soreness after he appeared to get hurt on a stolen base attempt in the top of the third. The injury looks to be a minor one, however, given that the 24-year-old is back in the lineup a day later. Morel has gone 8-for-34 with four home runs, 11 RBI and two stolen bases in May.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Goes deep, swipes bag

Morel went 1-for-5 with a two-run homer, a walk and a steal in Monday's loss to the Padres. Morel put the Cubs on the board with his two-run shot in the sixth inning after snagging a steal earlier in the contest. He has five hits over his last five games and four of them have left the yard. The 24-year-old is slashing .220/.315/.449 with 12 extra-base hits (eight home runs), four stolen bases and 23 RBI through 35 games this season.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Homers again Friday

Morel went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 3-1 loss to the Brewers. Morel snapped a scoreless tie with two outs in the sixth inning, launching a solo shot to centerfield off Joe Ross to put the Cubs ahead 1-0. Morel now has homers in back-to-back games and three in his last five contests following a span of 16 games without a long ball. The 24-year-old third baseman is slashing .210/.286/.403 through 133 plate appearances this year with six homers, 18 RBI, 19 runs scored and three stolen bases.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Nabs second steal

Morel went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Mets. The steal was his second of the season, and both pilfers have come in his last eight contests. Morel is struggling to get going with his bat, however -- through 29 games he's slashing a meager .215/.292/.374 with four homers, 14 RBI and 17 runs.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Hits go-ahead home run

Morel went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Monday's 3-1 win over the Mets. Morel was hitless until the ninth inning, when he delivered a two-out home run with a runner on against New York closer Edwin Diaz to break open a 1-1 tie. The key blast was Morel's fourth of the season and first since April 9. He's not off to as fast of a start as he had last year, but the 24-year-old can heat up in a hurry, and perhaps this effort will provide the spark.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Emerges from fall uninjured

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Morel "is fine" after exiting Saturday's game versus the Red Sox after the seventh inning following a fall in the outfield, CHGO Cubs reports. Morel toppled over left fielder Alexander Canario after making a running catch and landed hard on the ground, banging up his elbows and right hip. He looked to be in some pain and was removed from the game at that point. However, it sounds like he probably would've remained in if the score hadn't been so lopsided. It's possible the Cubs will hold Morel out Sunday if he's still a bit sore, but it does not appear fantasy managers need to have any real worry about his status.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Tallies two hits Friday

Morel went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Friday's 7-1 win over the Red Sox. Morel has been scuffling a bit lately, as he's batting just .176 over his last 10 games with no home runs, and he has just three long balls overall this season across 25 contests. Still, the 24-year-old is a legitimate power threat, and even though he hasn't really gotten going in that department yet, he can heat up in a hurry and hit homers in bunches.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Clobbers grand slam

Morel went 2-for-4 with a grand slam during Tuesday's 5-1 win over San Diego. Morel launched his third homer of 2024 on Tuesday, tagging reliever Stephen Kolek for the grand slam on Kolek's first pitch out of the bullpen. The long ball was Morel's first grand slam of his career. He's now logged a hit in 10 of his 11 games this season and is slashing .326/.370/.605 with an excellent 10.9 percent strikeout rate across 46 plate appearances.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Launches three-run homer in win

Morel went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Sunday's 9-5 win over the Rangers. Morel got the show started for the Cubs, clubbing a three-run homer off Texas starter Jon Gray in the top of the first inning, giving Chicago an early 3-0 lead. The 24-year-old has opened the season red-hot, going 5-for-14 with a homer, a triple, three RBI and three runs scored.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Paces offense on Opening Day

Morel went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored in Thursday's 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Rangers. Morel had a good game but almost had a great game, as he narrowly missed a grand slam on a long foul ball in the top of the 10th inning with the contest tied 3-3. The 24-year-old batted cleanup, and he should have the opportunity to post strong numbers this season from the middle of Chicago's lineup, particularly in the power department.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: Starts spring with homer

Morel went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's Cactus League game against the White Sox. Morel started at third base, which is where he's slated to see most of his playing time, at least in the early going. The 24-year-old got off to a flying start in the power department last season and now has his spring campaign started on the right foot as well. If Morel sees regular time at the hot corner and can build on the positives from his 2023 campaign, a big 2024 could be in store.

  • Cubs' Christopher Morel: To focus on playing third base

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Saturday that he wants Morel to concentrate on playing third base to begin spring training, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Counsell remains open to Morel's role changing over time but emphasized giving Morel consistency from the beginning of camp. Morel played just five games at third base last season, with most of his starts coming between DH, the outfield and second base. A move to third base for Morel would likely spell fewer at-bats for Nick Madrigal while opening the door for Matt Mervis or Michael Busch to see opportunities at DH.
