Player Outlook
It didn't show up much in his bottom-line stats, but Alec Burleson did do some interesting things at the plate last season with the Cardinals during his first extended look in the majors. Chief among them was an elite contact ability with a strikeout rate of just 13 percent, and he also impacted the ball pretty well with a 41 percent hard-hit rate. Burleson doesn't draw walks and offers virtually no defensive value, so his bat will need to carry him. The 25-year-old could become interesting with regular starts, but St. Louis' outfield and designated hitter situation remains crowded even after the trade of Tyler O'Neill.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Stays hot at plate

Burleson went 2-for-4 with two RBI singles, a run scored and two stolen bases during Sunday's 5-3 win over the Giants. Burleson generated multiple hits for the third consecutive contest, building on a two-homer effort Saturday with a pair of RBI on Sunday. After stealing just two bases in his first 67 games, Burleson has swiped three in the past two contests and took second base on both of his hits. The outfielder is 24-for-83 (.289) in June and ranks in the top 10 in MLB in both runs scored and homers during the month.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Fills stat sheet in win

Burleson went 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base in a 9-4 win over the Giants on Saturday. Burleson singled and scored in the first and then walked and stole a base in the third. The real damage came in his next two at-bats, as he hit a three-run home run in the fourth frame and a two-run blast in the sixth. This was the first two-homer game of Burleson's major-league career, and he now has six multi-hit efforts and seven home runs in June. The 25-year-old has been a steady source of production this season, hitting .281 with 12 home runs, 30 RBI and three steals over 235 at-bats.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Clubs homer No. 10

Burleson went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 9-8 extra-inning loss to the Marlins. The 25-year-old's shot off Roddery Munoz in the fourth inning was the third of three long balls by the Cardinals on the night, but the offense managed only one more run after that. Burleson is up to 10 homers on the season, and five of them have come in June. Despite the power surge, however, he's slashing just .254/.286/.507 in 70 plate appearances this month, and has produced just seven RBI.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Taking seat versus lefty

Burleson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins. After starting in each of the Cardinals' last 29 games, Burleson will finally get a break in the series opener in Miami. With southpaw Braxton Garrett on the bump for Miami, Cardinals skipper Oliver Marmol likely viewed it as an opportune time to give the lefty-hitting Burleson a day off. Dylan Carlson will step in for Burleson in right field.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Racks up three hits in loss

Burleson went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Pirates. There wasn't much for the hitters early in this contest, but Burleson was able to account for two of the five runs on Pittsburgh starter Paul Skenes' line. Through 10 games in June, Burleson is batting .286 (12-for-42) with five extra-base hits. He continues to be consistent for the Cardinals with a .283/.314/.455 slash line, nine home runs, 24 RBI, 20 runs scored and two stolen bases over 58 contests this season. Four of his homers have come in June.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Homers in Sunday's win

Burleson went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Rockies. Burleson is up to nine homers this year, four of which he's hit over nine contests in June. He's batting .237 (9-for-38) this month, but that slight drop in hitting has yet to cost him the everyday role he earned with a strong May. The outfielder is slashing .273/.305/.448 with 24 RBI, 20 runs scored, two stolen bases and seven doubles over 203 plate appearances on the year, and he's routinely batted second in the order over the last week.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Goes yard again

Burleson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Astros. Burleson's gone deep in three straight games after a stretch of 12 contests without a homer. He continues to look ready for an everyday role, which has come at a convenient time with the Cardinals missing Lars Nootbaar (oblique) and Tommy Edman (wrist). Burleson is up to a .276/.308/.448 slash line with eight homers, 22 RBI, 17 runs scored, two stolen bases and six doubles over 182 plate appearances this season.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Snaps slump with homer

Burleson went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Phillies. Burleson entered Sunday 0-for-17 over his last four games. He ended the drought -- his longest of the season -- with a third-inning blast to put the Cardinals ahead 4-2. Burleson has been forced into a larger role with the Cardinals lacking several starters, including Lars Nootbaar (oblique), who is expected to be out for nearly all of June. Burleson is slashing .273/.302/.418 with six homers, 20 RBI, 15 runs scored and two stolen bases over 50 contests and should have a chance to continue playing on a near-everyday basis for the foreseeable future.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Gets aboard three times in win

Burleson went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and one run scored in Monday's 6-3 win over the Orioles. Burleson upped his hitting streak to six games (12-for-25), and five of those contests have been multi-hit efforts. He also has two homers, two steals, four RBI and six runs scored in that span. Burleson isn't known for his speed -- he's at two steals in 2024, one shy of last year's mark, which he achieved in 107 games. The outfielder has added a strong .301/.333/.472 slash line with five home runs, 17 RBI, 11 runs scored and six doubles over 129 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Clubs fifth homer

Burleson went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Friday's 10-6 win over the Red Sox. Burleson popped a go-ahead solo shot in the fourth inning and added an RBI single in the seventh. The 25-year-old has multiple hits in three straight games, which is only strengthening his claim for playing time between designated hitter, the corner outfield spots and first base. Burleson is up to five homers, 17 RBI, nine runs scored, one stolen base and a .286/.316/.473 slash line through 117 plate appearances this season.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Resting against lefty

Burleson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. The lefty-hitting Burleson's streak of five consecutive starts will come to an end while he exits the lineup with southpaw Garrett Crochet on the hill for the White Sox. With Burleson on the bench, Willson Contreras will get a day off of catching and instead serve as the Cardinals' designated hitter.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: On bench Wednesday

Burleson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres. Burleson is absent from the lineup while St. Louis faces a right-hander (Joe Musgrove) on Wednesday, but the 25-year-old should still play fairly regularly against righties for the early part of the season until the Cardinals get two of Lars Nootbaar (rib), Dylan Carlson (shoulder) and Tommy Edman (wrist) back from the injured list. While Burleson takes a seat Wednesday, Willson Contreras will get a day off behind the dish and will serve as St. Louis' designated hitter.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Garners start at DH

Burleson will serve as the Cardinals' designated hitter and No. 6 batter in Thursday's season opener against the Dodgers. The Cardinals have been hamstrung by injuries, but Burleson also earned a spot in the Opening Day lineup with a .988 OPS this spring. At least to start the season, the lefty-hitting Burleson looks to have earned the strong side of a platoon role at designated hitter over fellow lefty hitter Matt Carpenter.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Favorite to fill in for Nootbaar

Burleson will receive starter's reps in left field while Lars Nootbaar (ribs) is sidelined, John Denton of MLB.com reports. The team hasn't officially ruled Nootbaar out for Opening Day as he recovers from two fractured ribs, but a stint on the injured list seems very likely. It had seemed not long ago that Burleson might be on the outside looking in to even make the roster, but with Nootbaar and Tommy Edman (wrist) out, he could now receive regular starts versus right-handed pitching. The 25-year-old is 7-for-18 with a 0:3 K:BB in his first eight Grapefruit League contests.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Making good contact

Burleson has gone 6-for-17 over seven Grapefruit League games. Burleson has two RBI, one run scored and a walk this spring. The 25-year-old outfielder shed some weight in the offseason to improve his defense -- he struggled in the outfield particularly, but lacks an everyday path to playing time at first base or designated hitter due to Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Gorman being the likely starters at those positions. A lefty hitter, Burleson could push to be the Cardinals' fourth outfielder, which is more likely to happen if Tommy Edman (wrist) begins 2024 on the injured list.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Goes on IL with thumb fracture

St. Louis placed Burleson on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left thumb fracture. Burleson suffered the season-ending injury while sliding into third base Tuesday night against the Brewers and underwent surgery Wednesday morning. The 24-year-old finishes the 2023 campaign with a .244/.300/.390 slash line, eight home runs, 20 doubles and 36 RBI in 107 major-league games.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Picks up second steal

Burleson went 1-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Phillies. Burleson has two steals this season, and they've come over his last eight games. He's hit safely in his last three contests, and he could be gaining some traction in the lineup against right-handed pitchers. The 24-year-old is up to a .240/.293/.383 slash line with eight home runs, 35 RBI and 32 runs scored through 103 games. The Cardinals will likely want to get a long look at Burleson over the last two weeks of the season to evaluate his progress this year.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Notches first steal

Burleson went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 11-6 win over Atlanta. The steal was Burleson's first of the season, which came on his second attempt. The outfielder has had a tough time breaking into the Cardinals' lineup on a regular basis, as the team has typically used the designated hitter spot to get some rest for lineup regulars. Through 311 plate appearances this season, Burleson has a .245/.297/.399 slash line with eight home runs, 33 RBI and 31 runs scored. He should primarily play against right-handed pitchers when he's in the lineup, as he has a paltry .499 OPS over 27 plate appearances versus southpaws this year.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Hits bench Monday

Burleson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates, John Denton of MLB.com reports. The Pirates are deploying a right-hander (Thomas Hatch) as their opening pitcher, but with southpaw Bailey Falter likely to cover the bulk of the innings behind him, the lefty-hitting Burleson will head to the bench. Catcher Andrew Knizner will essentially fill Burleson's spot in the lineup while Willson Contreras gets a day off behind the plate and serves as St. Louis' designated hitter.

  • Cardinals' Alec Burleson: Sitting versus lefty

Burleson is out of the lineup Thursday versus the Mets. Burleson went 2-for-4 with a double out of the cleanup spot Wednesday against the Athletics, but he'll head to the bench Thursday with left-hander Jose Quintana toeing the slab for New York. Tyler O'Neill, Tommy Edman and Jordan Walker are starting across the outfield while Willson Contreras serves as the Cardinals' designated hitter. Andrew Knizner will catch.
