Cedric Mullins struggled for a second consecutive seasons to match the production from his breakout season in 2021. 2023 saw him struggle at the plate around two different stints on the injured list with groin strains that clearly had an impact on his efforts at the plate. Despite the injuries, Mullins was voluming at a 2022 pace but not being 100% certainly impacted his strikeouts at the plate which pulled his batting average down once again. Mullins has now seen his average fall nearly 60 points over the past two seasons and much of the red ink which once proliferated his StatCast profile has turned into a cool blue hue. 2023 saw Mullins lean into a pull-heavy flyball approach which helped him pace ahead of 2022's power numbers but he literally limped to a .205/.249/.374 triple-slash line from August 1st to the end of the season. A healthy Mullins can still volume his way fantasy value, but 2021 was the dream while a blend of the past two seasons is closer to reality.

  • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: Logs steal in loss

Mullins went 2-for-5 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 14-11 loss to the Astros. Mullins has multiple hits in three straight games, and he's added a pair of extra-base hits and three steals in that span. He's batting .333 (14-for-42) over his last 12 contests, a stretch that has helped him regain a starting role in center field. The outfielder is batting .202 on the year -- this is the first time he's been at or above .200 since May 8. He's added a .592 OPS, seven home runs, 25 RBI, 35 runs scored and a team-leading 16 steals.

  • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: Another multi-hit game

Mullins went 2-for-6 with a double, a two-run homer and three runs scored in Thursday's win over the Yankees. Mullins capitalized on a hanging slider from Luis Gil in the top of the second and sent it into the stands in right field for a two-run shot, giving the Orioles an early 3-1 lead. The outfielder would then add a double in the ninth before coming around to score for a third time, giving him back-to-back multi-hit games. Mullins has also scored multiple runs in two straight contests, while Thursday's home run marked his first long ball since April 26 against the Athletics.

  • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: Two hits, two steals in win

Mullins went 2-for-5 with one RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases in a 7-6 win over the Yankees on Wednesday. Mullins singled, stole second base and scored on a Ramon Urias home run in the fifth inning. He then took over in the 10th frame, hitting an RBI single, stealing third and scoring on an errant throw. Mullins saw a five-game hitting streak come to an end Tuesday but responded with a big game that included his first RBI in the month of June. While his .193 batting average is obviously disappointing, Mullins has still managed to accumulate six home runs and 15 steals over 224 plate appearances in 2024.

Mullins is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees, Cordell Woodland of 105.7 The Fan Baltimore reports. Still, Mullins will get the day off Tuesday, giving way to Colton Cowser in center.

  • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: Recapturing playing time

Mullins will start in center field and bat seventh in Sunday's game against the Phillies. Mullins appeared to have lost hold of his regular spot in the outfield to Austin Hays earlier this month, but the former has seemingly regained the gig. Hays is sitting for the Orioles' third straight matchup with a right-hander (Zack Wheeler), while the lefty-hitting Mullins has started on each of those occasions and also started against a southpaw (Ranger Suarez) on Friday. Mullins enters Sunday's game riding a four-game hitting streak.

  • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: Picks up steal in win

Mullins went 2-for-4 with a triple, a stolen base and one run scored in Sunday's 9-2 win over the Rays. Mullins entered Sunday 0-for-22 over his last eight games. He was able to break the drought with a fifth-inning single before adding a leadoff triple in the seventh. The outfielder has two steals over his last four contests even amid his deep slump. Mullins is slashing just .178/.227/.317 with 13 steals, six home runs, 22 RBI and 25 runs scored over 194 plate appearances this season. He's picked up extra work while Austin Hays (ribs) has been limited to a bench role, but Mullins is likely to see a smaller role once the Orioles' outfield is back to full health.

  • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: Collects 12th steal

Mullins went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and one run scored in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays. Mullins has seen his playing time dip amid his prolonged struggles at the plate. He's gone just 9-for-73 (.123) with a 3:24 BB:K over 26 contests since the start of May, though he has managed to pick up six steals in that span despite his troubles getting on base. Mullins is slashing a meager .178/.225/.314 with 12 steals, six home runs, 22 RBI and 23 runs scored over 182 plate appearances this year. Austin Hays and Colton Cowser have been the main players to benefit from Mullins' decreased playing time, and the Orioles aren't short on prospects to call up if they choose to mix up the composition of outfielders on their roster.

Mullins is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Blue Jays. Dating back to May 24, Mullins has produced just one hit in 20 at-bats, bringing his season-long slash line down to an abysmal .181/.225/.319 over 178 plate appearances. • Orioles' Cedric Mullins: Sitting in second straight game

Mullins is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. The lefty-hitting Mullins is on the bench for the second straight game against a right-handed starting pitcher, with Colton Cowser once again sliding over from left field to cover center field in Mullins' stead. The Orioles haven't indicated that Mullins is dealing with an injury or illness, so the back-to-back days out of the lineup likely indicate that he's at risk of moving into a part-time role, if he hasn't already. Mullins is off to a rough start to the season, having posted a career-low .611 OPS and career-worst 25.2 percent strikeout rate across 131 plate appearances.
