Player Outlook
Jorge Polanco again battled durability issues in 2023, missing significant time due to ankle, knee and hamstring injuries, but he registered a .789 OPS with 14 home runs across 80 games when healthy. Polanco missed the final month of 2022 with a knee injury and his rehab then stalled during spring training postponing his debut until late April. He then missed about eight weeks between two IL stints for a strained left hamstring. When healthy, he had similar underlying metrics as last season with a strong walk rate (10.5%), a slightly better hard hit rate (40.6% to 38.7%), exit velocity (88.4 to 89.0) and Barrel rate (13.8 to 10.2). Defensive metrics were a mixed bag for evaluating his defense, but he's still seen as a good defender when healthy. He also played 15 games at third base when the Twins were thin at the hot corner, which could give him added position eligibility in some formats. Polanco has decent power for a middle infielder and good command of the strike zone, so he can still produce like his All-Star season when healthy. However, he may be a significant health risk since he's missed significant time to injury each of the last two seasons.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Reinstated from injured list

The Mariners activated Polanco (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list Monday. Polanco was sidelined for just under a month with a right hamstring strain. He went 6-for-20 in six games between High-A Everett and Triple-A Tacoma during his rehab assignment, slugging three home runs over his final two contests. Polanco has slashed a disappointing .195/.293/.302 across 181 plate appearances for Seattle this season. He'll resume his role as the club's everyday second baseman.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Swats two homers in rehab game

Polanco (hamstring) played a full game at second base in Triple-A Tacoma's win over Las Vegas on Friday, going 2-for-4 with two solo home runs and another RBI from a bases-loaded walk. Polanco may have put the bow on a highly successful rehab assignment with Friday's performance. Not only were the offensive fireworks a welcome sight for a player who's struggled all season at the big-league level, but Polanco was also able to put in a full game on defense for the first time during his rehab stint. It would seem highly likely the Mariners will deem him ready for activation at this point, but they may opt to have Polanco finish out the weekend with the Rainiers before potentially meeting the club in Tampa Bay for the start of a three-game series against the Rays on Monday.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Full game at DH

Polanco (hamstring) took a full game's worth of plate appearances as the designated hitter in Triple-A Tacoma's win over Las Vegas on Wednesday, going 1-for-4 with a walk and a run. Polanco's ability to play in back-to-back games for the second time in his rehab assignment appears to bode well for his chances of imminent activation. The veteran infielder already logged seven innings on defense Tuesday, so there may be nothing left to prove for Polanco in terms of the fitness of his previously ailing hamstring.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Productive third rehab game

Polanco (hamstring) shifted his rehab assignment to Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, playing seven innings at second base and going 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run in a loss to Las Vegas. It was a feel-good night all around for Polanco within the context of his recovery, as he handled the bump up in affiliate from High-A Everett well and logged his longest time on the field yet over his first three minor-league games. The veteran infielder is likely due for at least one more outing with the Rainiers before activation is considered, and in addition to the apparently improved condition of his previously ailing hamstring, it's encouraging Polanco has reached safely in all three rehab games thus far.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Plays defense in second rehab game

Polanco (hamstring) started at second base in High-A Everett's win over Eugene on Sunday and went 0-for-1 with two walks before being replaced defensively in the bottom of the fourth inning. Polanco was able to take another step with his time on the field, even if it was relatively brief. The veteran has reached safely in each of his first two rehab games, and he's now poised to shift his assignment to Triple-A Tacoma when the Rainiers resume play Tuesday.

Polanco (hamstring) started at designated hitter in High-A Everett's win over Eugene on Saturday and went 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. Polanco (hamstring) is slated to run the bases before Thursday's game against the White Sox and then head out on a rehab assignment, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports. Polanco has been progressively ramping up his level of activity in recent days, apparently without any setbacks. MLB.com reports that general manager Justin Hollander indicated team trainers would jointly assess Polanco's condition with the veteran infielder following Thursday's activity, at which point the length of the rehab assignment would likely be determined.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Ramping up activity

Polanco (hamstring) has been ramping up baseball activities but will require a minor-league rehab assignment before activation, MLB.com reports. However, manager Scott Servais confirmed before Friday's series opener against the Royals that Polanco will require at least a brief rehab assignment, which could commence at Triple-A Tacoma in the coming days.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Lands on IL with hamstring strain

The Mariners placed Polanco on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a right hamstring strain. Polanco was replaced by Josh Rojas in the sixth inning of Sunday's 9-5 win over the Nationals, with the former going 1-for-2 with an RBI before exiting. Polanco missed seven games earlier in May due to a right hamstring issue, and the 30-year-old will spend time on the injured list this time around. General manager Justin Hollander said Monday that while Polanco has not yet undergone an MRI, he is not expected to be sidelined long, per Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM. The Mariners selected Ryan Bliss from Triple-A Tacoma in a corresponding move, and he will start at second base Monday and bat eighth against Astros southpaw Framber Valdez.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Getting rest Thursday

Polanco is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees. After missing seven consecutive starts due to a right hamstring injury, Polanco made his return to the lineup in Wednesday's 7-3 loss, starting at second base while going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. The Mariners haven't indicated that Polanco experienced a setback with his hamstring Wednesday, so his absence Thursday is likely just a matter of maintenance due to the quick turnaround for the series finale, which begins at 12:35 p.m. ET. Dylan Moore will fill in for Polanco at the keystone.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Hitless in return

Polanco (hamstring) went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in Wednesday's 7-3 loss to the Yankees. This was Polanco's first game action since he suffered the injury May 13 versus the Royals. The infielder is down to a .187/.291/.300 slash line with five home runs, 13 RBI, 15 runs scored and one stolen base over 172 plate appearances. While he has yet to get his bat going in his first season with the Mariners, he's likely to reclaim a starting role at second base. If he can't start hitting better, Polanco could be pressured for playing time by Josh Rojas and Dylan Moore now that the Seattle lineup is at full health.

  • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: Sitting again Tuesday

Polanco (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Yankees. Polanco hasn't taken the field since May 13, but he's close to returning after being available off the bench Monday. While it hasn't been confirmed he'll be available Tuesday, that should be the expectation considering his status Monday. Dylan Moore will draw a start at second base and bat ninth.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said that Polanco (hamstring) will be available off the bench Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. • Mariners' Jorge Polanco: IL decision likely imminent

Polanco (hamstring), who was out of the lineup for a fifth straight game Sunday, did some explosive running drills before the series finale against the Orioles but could still be placed on the injured list in coming days, MLB.com reports. Despite Polanco upping his activity level Sunday, manager Scott Servais confirmed the veteran infielder is still not moving around at full speed. As such, the Mariners could make a decision on whether to place Polanco on the IL as early as Monday when the team opens a four-game series against the Yankees. Servais conceded Sunday that Polanco was feeling better and has progressed to swinging a bat without discomfort, but given the lingering nature of hamstring injuries, an IL stint might still be necessary to ensure a full recovery.
