Player Outlook
David Fry was called up for the first time in his career in May of 2023, slashing .238/.319./.416 across 113 plate appearances. Fry is a backup option at best with limited fantasy appeal, though he does show some pop at the dish with a .178 ISO and 36.6% Hard Hit Rate in his limited major league experience. The 28-year-old may find himself back in the minors in 2024 as Cleveland signed veteran Austin Hedges to backup Bo Naylor ahead of the new campaign making him an avoid for fantasy managers even in multi-catcher formats.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Drawing start at DH on Monday

Fry (elbow) will start at designated hitter and bat fifth in Monday's game against the Orioles. Fry's status heading into the series opener in Baltimore was somewhat murky after he was forced out of Sunday's 6-5 win over Toronto with right elbow inflammation, but the 29-year-old is apparently feeling well enough to stick in the lineup Monday in a non-defensive role. Once the elbow issue fully subsides, expect Fry to mix in behind the plate and in the corner outfield along with at DH as the Guardians make a concerted effort to keep his productive bat in the lineup.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Battling elbow inflammation

Fry was removed from Sunday's game against Toronto due to right elbow inflammation, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. Fry delivered an RBI single during the first inning of Sunday's contest before being replaced behind the plate by Bo Naylor in the third. The Guardians are currently viewing Fry as day-to-day, though he will likely undergo further testing to determine the extent of his injury.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Taking seat Thursday

Fry is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays. Fry will take a seat for Thursday's series finale, as he had been scheduled to head to the bench Wednesday before that game was postponed due to inclement weather. Though his 1.092 OPS on the season ranks first in the majors among all players with at least 140 plate appearances, Fry still hasn't quite locked down a full-time role in Cleveland. He'll be out of the lineup for the second time in three games while the Guardians go with Bo Naylor at catcher and Kyle Manzardo at designated hitter.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Not starting Wednesday

Fry is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals. Among all players with at least 140 plate appearances, Fry leads the majors with a 1.092 OPS on the season, but he still hasn't quite seized hold of a full-time role in Cleveland. He'll be on the bench for the second time in three games while the Guardians go with Bo Naylor at catcher and Kyle Manzardo at designated hitter.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Heading to bench Sunday

Fry is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. Fry will head to the bench after a stretch of six consecutive starts during which he slashed .333/.462/.667 with three extra-base hits, one stolen base, eight RBI and five runs. Five of his last six starts came in left field, but with Steven Kwan back from the injured list, Fry could end up seeing most of his opportunities at designated hitter moving forward. Kyle Manzardo represents Fry's primary competition for playing time at DH, but both will be on the bench Sunday while Jose Ramirez gets a day off from third base and but sticks in the starting nine in a non-defensive role.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Homers again in win

Fry went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run and a walk in Friday's 7-1 win over the Nationals. The homer was Fry's fourth in his last eight games. The 28-year-old has enjoyed a memorable May, going 23-for-60 (.383) with seven homers and 18 RBI over 21 contests for the month. He's slashing .352/.485/.629 with eight homers, 27 RBI, 27 runs scored and four stolen bases over 40 games this season. Fry offers a right-handed option at multiple positions, though he's unlikely to be needed in left field as much with Steven Kwan back from a hamstring injury. Fry's bat has been hot enough to force a few tough decisions into manager Stephen Vogt's lineup choices moving forward.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Fills stat sheet in win

Fry went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run, a stolen base and three total runs scored in Tuesday's 13-7 win over the Rockies. Fry has a pair of three-hits games over his last nine contests, going 13-for-26 (.500) with four homers, three steals and 11 RBI in that span. The utility man is on another level lately, though he's been strong throughout the campaign with a .357/.492/.622 slash line, seven homers, 23 RBI, 26 runs scored and four steals over 128 plate appearances. He's started three straight games in left field, but that avenue into the lineup will close when Steven Kwan (hamstring) returns from the injured list. Fry could compete for playing time with Kyle Manzardo at designated hitter or Bo Naylor at catcher, given both of those players' struggles at the plate.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Goes yard in Friday's win

Fry went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, two walks and two total runs scored in Friday's 10-4 win over the Angels. Fry has homered five times over his last 13 games, going 14-for-33 (.424) with a 10:6 BB:K in that span. The 28-year-old got a start at catcher versus southpaw Patrick Sandoval in this contest, though manager Stephen Vogt has found room for him in various spots including first base, third base, left field and designated hitter this season. Fry is slashing a stellar .360/.500/.628 with six homers, 19 RBI, 22 runs scored and three stolen bases over 114 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Homers off bench Tuesday

Fry went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run and a walk in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Mets. Fry didn't start Tuesday, but he delivered a two-run home run when he pinch hit for Kyle Manzardo in the sixth inning. Over his last 11 games, Fry has gone 10-for-27 (.370) with four homers, nine RBI, 10 runs scored, two stolen bases and an 8:6 BB:K. The 28-year-old is taking advantage of every opportunity he gets despite lacking an everyday spot in the lineup. He's up to a .338/.476/.588 slash line with five homers, 18 RBI, 19 runs scored and three steals over 105 plate appearances this season. Fry has already surpassed his numbers from 113 plate appearances in 2023 in all of the major fantasy-relevant categories.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Hits game-tying homer

Fry went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Tigers. Fry went yard in the ninth inning off Andrew Chafin to tie the game at 4-4. This was Fry's second homer of the season. The versatile 28-year-old is batting .364 (8-for-22) over his last eight games. His ability to catch, play in the corner outfield and fill in at first base gives him multiple paths to playing time, and that versatility figures to be even more important as the Guardians weigh their options for left field with Steven Kwan (hamstring) likely out for four weeks. Fry is slashing .316/.438/.491 with two homers, one stolen base, 10 RBI, 11 runs scored and four doubles over 73 plate appearances on the season.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Pops first homer

Fry went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Twins. Getting the start behind the plate and batting eighth, Fry gave the Guardians' pitching staff all the offense it would need by taking Joe Ryan deep in the second inning. It was the first homer of the season for the 28-year-old utility player and also his first appearance at catcher, but he's also started one game at first base and one at DH while also coming off the bench to see some action at third base. Fry could start to get more consistent playing time somewhere on the diamond if he keeps raking -- he's batting .455 (5-for-11) with six RBI and four runs so far.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Records three hits on Opening Day

Fry went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI in Thursday's 8-0 Opening Day win over Oakland. Fry got the start at DH and batted fifth in the order following a strong spring during which he hit .295 with a pair of homers and eight RBI. The 28-year-old scored Cleveland's first run of the campaign in the second inning Thursday, coming around to score on a Tyler Freeman double following his own one-out two-bagger. In addition to his three hits, Fry added a sacrifice fly in the ninth frame to cap the scoring in the contest. It will take much more than one game for him to gain viability in mixed fantasy leagues, though the fact that Fry holds catcher eligibility and may log occasional time at DH in addition to being able to play the infield and outfield gives him some intrigue, especially in two-catcher formats.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Shakes off illness

Fry (illness) will serve as the Guardians' designated hitter and No. 8 batter in Monday's Cactus League game against the Dodgers. Fry hadn't played in any spring games since March 3 due to an illness, but he'll still have plenty of time to get enough at-bats in during Cactus League play and keep himself prepared for the start of the regular season. The 28-year-old sits behind Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges on the depth chart at catcher, but Fry's ability to play first base as well as both corner-outfield spots could help him in his battle for one of the Guardians' available bench roles.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Strikeouts piling up

Fry has gone 3-for-13 with two extra-base hits, four RBI and five strikeouts over five Cactus League games. Fry needs a strong spring, as he is in contention for a number of roles. A natural catcher, Fry could displace Austin Hedges from the backup role behind Bo Naylor (back). If that doesn't happen, Fry also offers coverage at first base and the corner outfield. He's unlikely to displace Josh Naylor at first base, but right field remains wide open for the Guardians. Fry had his first taste of major-league action in 2023, slashing .238/.319/.416 with four home runs, 15 RBI, 12 runs scored and two stolen bases over 113 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Set for rehab assignment

Fry (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Fry last appeared in a game Aug. 4, but he resumed baseball activities just over a week ago. The 27-year-old will likely get two or three games with Columbus as he works his way back from a left hamstring strain. Once he's cleared to return, he'll be available to provide an additional short-side platoon option at catcher, first base, right field or designated hitter. Considering the Guardians already have three catchers on the roster and have bolstered their outfield this month, first base is his most reasonable path to playing time, at least until Josh Naylor (oblique) returns.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Homers again Wednesday

Fry went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's 8-3 win over the Royals. Fry's now hit three homers over his last eight games while going 8-for-24 (.333) with a 1.176 OPS in that span. Overall, the 27-year-old Fry is slashing an impressive .288/.342/.493 with four homers, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored and two steals across his first 79 plate appearances. While Bo Naylor will see the majority of reps behind the plate, Fry should be able to earn fairly regular at-bats thanks to his ability to play multiple infield and outfield positions.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Blasts homer in loss

Fry went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, an additional run scored and a walk in Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Rangers. Fry got a rare start behind the dish Sunday and made it count. He's found ways to get in the lineup elsewhere, primarily in right field and at first base when he's not catching. The versatile 27-year-old is forcing the issue with a strong .288/.351/.423 slash line, two homers, eight RBI, six runs scored and a double over 57 plate appearances. He's not guaranteed an everyday role, but he can provide a little pop off the bench.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Delivers walk-off knock

Fry went 2-for-4 with a walk, one RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over Atlanta. Fry knocked in a run for the third time over his last five games, with this one coming via the walk-off hit in the 10th inning. The 27-year-old is starting to push for more playing time -- he's been in the lineup for three of the last five games. For the season, he's batting .293 with a home run, six RBI, two steals and four runs scored over 44 plate appearances. His versatility allows him to cover multiple positions around the diamond.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Notches first steal

Fry went 0-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 8-6 extra-inning win over the Cubs. Fry knocked in a run on a fielder's choice and stole second in the fourth inning. The steal was his first at the major-league level. Fry provides cover at a number of defensive positions, but he isn't getting into the starting lineup frequently -- he's started in just seven of the 24 games he's played. Fry owns a .270/.308/.378 slash line with a home run, five RBI and four runs scored over 39 plate appearances.

  • Guardians' David Fry: Belts first big-league homer

Fry went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run, a double and an additional run in Thursday's 8-6 victory versus the Padres. Fry helped Cleveland get off to a fast start with a three-run shot to left field in the first inning. It was the first long ball of his major-league career in his 20th plate appearance. Fry went deep 17 times at the Triple-A level in 2022, so he has demonstrated some pop in the past. His .227/.261/.409 slash line so far this season isn't going to turn many heads, but Fry's ability to play catcher (in addition to three infield spots) could open the door to more playing time given the offensive struggles of fellow backstops Mike Zunino and Cam Gallagher.
