Player Outlook
In large part due to working with Dustin Pedroia in the spring, Jarren Duran displayed a positive change in attitude, not to mention a reworked swing. Even so, Duran opened the season with Triple-A Worcester before being called up in early April to add outfield depth following the wrist injury to Adam Duvall. Duran turned out to be more than depth as he became the regular center fielder, demonstrating much more hustle. Unfortunately, Duran was limited to only 102 games as he missed almost a quarter of the season after season-ending surgery on his left big toe. The league had begun to adjust, so the lost time makes it harder to evaluate the extent of Duran's break out. Through July 23, he batted .317/.367/.514, but afterwards, he posted a .219/.269/.370 line. Duran is expected to be ready for spring training and should be a regular in the outfield. There is no doubting his stolen base prowess, but his power and ability to get on base are unclear. He'll probably land closer to the early version, but don't expect a repeat of his pre-All-Star break production.

Duran went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Reds. Duran made two big plays in the final innings to spur Boston to a win. The scorching hot Duran is batting .385 (20-for-52) over a 12-game hit streak.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Steals home, goes yard

Duran went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a steal of home plate during Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rays. The Red Sox executed a first-and-third double steal perfectly in the eighth inning, as the throw to second to catch Rafael Devers stealing was cut off early and the subsequent throw to home wasn't in time to tag the speedy Duran. Duran has hit safely in seven straight games, batting 10-for-27 (.370) with a pair of triples, solo home runs and stolen bases during that stretch.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Running less

Duran has attempted five steals over the last 35 games, after he opened the season with six steals in the first six games. There are a few factors that explain the drop in attempts, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Opposing teams became aware of Duran's potential impact, and the Red Sox have been more judicious after running into several outs early in the season. Additionally, manager Alex Cora asked Duran to run less given that he plays every day.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Triple, stolen base vs. Guardians

Duran went 1-for-4 with a two-run triple, two runs scored and a stolen base in Thursday's 5-4 loss to Cleveland. Duran drew a walk to lead off the home half of the first inning before swiping his seventh bag of the year. The speedy outfielder would then drive in a pair of runs with a triple in the sixth inning, his first three-bagger this season. Duran is now 5-for-17 with three extra-base hits in his last four contests. He's off to a nice start following a promising 2023 campaign, slashing .301/.366/.422 with a home run, 12 runs scored and nine RBI through his first 20 games.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Four hits in win

Duran went 4-for-4 in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the Athletics. Duran's posted three consecutive multi-hit games following a 2-for-16 start to the season. It's a hopeful sign for the outfielder, who earlier in his career let the pressure of slumps and mistakes get the better of him. That began to change in 2023 when he posted an .886 OPS over the first half of the season before an August injury ended his season. A mentally sound Duran could be a difference maker atop Boston's lineup. While his .500 BABIP is unsustainable, the outfielder is 11-for-28 (.393) with six steals through seven games.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Back in action

Duran (ankle) will start in center field and lead off in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. As expected, Duran will return after a brief injury scare. He was seen flexing his left foot Tuesday -- the same foot he had surgery on last August -- but it seems he's already put the issue behind him. If healthy, Duran will serve as Boston's primary leadoff man against both righties and lefties.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Making spring debut Friday

Duran (toe) is starting in left field and batting leadoff in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Twins, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Manager Alex Cora previously said the 27-year-old would serve as the DH in his spring debut, but he'll instead man left field. Duran had a delayed start to spring training while completing his recovery from August toe surgery, but he has plenty of time to ramp up his workload before Opening Day.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Will be Boston's leadoff hitter

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Friday that Duran will be the team's leadoff hitter this season, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Cora did add that there will be matchups to consider when mulling the leadoff decision, but Duran will be at the top of the order most days against both righties and lefties. The left-handed hitting Duran slashed .296/.349/.491 versus right-handers in 2023 and held his own against lefties with a .289/.327/.422 line, albeit with a 30.6 percent strikeout rate. Duran's 2023 season ended prematurely following surgery in late August to repair the flexor tendon in his left big toe, but he's not under any restrictions this spring. He is competing with Ceddanne Rafaela for the center field job but would presumably slide over to right field if Rafaela plays center.

  • Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Begins weight-bearing exercises

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Wednesday that Duran (toe) has begun weight-bearing exercises, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Duran is more than two months removed from Aug. 30 surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his left big toe and should be fully recovered well before the beginning of spring training in February. The 27-year-old center fielder enjoyed a mini breakout with the Red Sox in 2023, slashing .295/.346/.482 with eight homers and 24 steals across 102 games.

Duran was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a left toe sprain, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. We already knew this move was likely, and now it's official. Adam Duvall should get the bulk of the starts in center field while Duran is sidelined, and prospect Wilyer Abreu, who was recalled in a corresponding move, could also get some work in the short term.
