Player Outlook
After an injury-plagued 2022 season, Ryan Jeffers showed significant improvement by placing second among catchers in OPS and becoming the primary catcher for the Twins by season end. Jeffers had just a .648 OPS in 2022 and played just seven games after breaking his thumb in July 2022. He began the 2023 season as the backup catcher to Christian Vazquez, though the Twins split the workload behind the plate pretty evenly all year. However, Jeffers started behind the plate in every playoff game. Jeffers has good power with above-average exit velocity (5th among catchers) and Hard Hit % (11th among catchers). He draws walks at a good rate (9.9BB%) which helps somewhat offset a high strikeout rate (27.8% K%). He also improved dramatically against right-handed pitching (.828 OPS) after struggling against righties (career .695 OPS) while feasting on lefties (career .840 OPS). Jeffers was seen as a strong defender but declined in pitch framing last season and his other fielding metrics graded below average. That's a concern for increased playing time. The Twins like to utilize two catchers to reduce wear and tear, so Vazquez will likely split duties again, but Jeffers has more upside with the bat and his power.

  • Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Out of Sunday's lineup

  • Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Heading to bench Wednesday

Jeffers is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. With solid counting statistics (12 home runs, two stolen bases, 37 RBI and 28 runs) and a non-toxic batting average (.234), Jeffers has been one of the top fantasy catchers this season, but he's started to lose some of his shine in recent weeks. He's slashing just .153/.240/.259 overall since May 15, and his ongoing struggles at the dish have begun to cost him some playing time. He'll give way Wednesday to Christian Vazquez, who remains the Twins' No. 2 catcher but seems to have moved his way into more of a timeshare with Jeffers behind the dish.

  • Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Receiving Friday off

Jeffers is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Oakland. Jeffers has yet to make consecutive starts behind the plate this season, and his playing time has slipped lately, as he hasn't made a start at designated hitter since June 1. It's been a rough month so far for the 27-year-old, who has gone 3-for-30 through nine contests. Christian Vazquez will step in behind the plate Friday to catch for Simeon Woods Richardson.

Jeffers is out of the lineup for Monday's contest against the Rockies. He and Christian Vazquez have now alternated starts at catcher over the last seven games for the Twins. Jeffers has slowed down considerably in June with just two hits in his first 22 plate appearances, so perhaps the extra rest will help recharge his batteries.

Jeffers went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Yankees. Jeffers gave Minnesota the lead with a solo homer as the team's first batter of the game. However, the Twins wouldn't score another run following Jeffers' round tripper, and Jeffers himself struck out in his final three plate appearances. Jeffers has started four of the Twins' first five games -- three behind the plate, and one at DH.

  • Twins' Ryan Jeffers: Twins plan to split catcher duties

The Twins plan to about equally split playing time behind the plate this season even with Jeffers' ascension late last year that saw him start every playoff game, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told Dan Hayes of The Athletic. The Twins like to utilize two catchers to reduce wear and tear, so this isn't a big surprise. However, Jeffers surged at the plate last season with a career-high .858 OPS and a .928 OPS in the second half. Meanwhile, Christian Vazquez struggled by hitting .223 with little power (.095 ISO) and a paltry .280 OBA. Jeffers could still see a majority of the playing time, but Baldelli's comments should give pause for any fantasy manager looking for a significant increase in his counting stats.

Jeffers is slated to share catching duties with Christian Vazquez again in 2024.
