  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Remains in organization

The Angels outrighted Suarez to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.

Suarez passed through waivers unclaimed and will remain in the organization. The left-hander held an 8.15 ERA over 18 appearances (one start) this season before being removed from the 40-man roster. The Angels could have Suarez get stretched back out as a starter at Salt Lake as they look to get him back on track.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Pushed off 40-man roster

The Angels designated Suarez for assignment Monday.

Suarez looked like he was going to be a solid mid-rotation starter for the Angels when he posted a 3.86 ERA and 188:69 K:BB over 207.1 innings between the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He's struggled mightily at the big-league level ever since, however, posting an 8.22 ERA over 29 appearances (eight starts). He also missed a large chunk of the 2023 season with shoulder problems. Still, as a 26-year-old that's shown promise in the past, another organization could take another chance at Suarez via trade or waiver claim.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Blasted as bulk reliever

Suarez (1-2) took the loss against San Francisco on Sunday, allowing five runs on five hits and one walk over one-plus inning.

Ben Joyce worked two frames as the opener in the contest, and Suarez was deployed next, presumably to attempt to cover multiple innings. That plan seemed to be on track when the left-hander tossed a scoreless third frame (despite giving up two hits), but Suarez then allowed five straight batters to reach -- on three doubles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch -- in the bottom of the fourth and was consequently given the hook. Suarez has given up nine runs over 3.2 innings across his past two appearances, pushing his season ERA up to an ugly 8.15.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Unable to complete three innings

Suarez dropped to 1-1 on the season in Tuesday's 9-4 loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three over 2.2 innings.

Suarez made his first start of the season Tuesday and didn't make a particularly compelling case to earn additional turns through the rotation. He allowed a pair of runs in the second after giving up two triples and a single, and Randal Grichuk would tack on a two-run blast in the third to spell an early end to Suarez's night. The 26-year-old's 7.08 ERA on the season is the second-highest in all of baseball among pitchers who have pitched at least 30 innings, trailing only Kyle Hendricks (9.07). If Chase Silseth (elbow) is ready to return from the 60-day injured list the next time Suarez's turn comes up Sunday in San Francisco, the latter will presumably head back to the bullpen.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Moving into rotation Tuesday

Suarez is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Suarez made 58 starts for the Angels over the past five seasons, but after losing out in a battle for a rotation spot in spring training, he's been working exclusively as a reliever in 2024 and has posted a 6.54 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 34:20 K:BB in 31.2 innings. He won't be moving into the rotation on merit, but he'll nonetheless slot into the starting spot that had been previously occupied by the struggling Reid Detmers, who was recently demoted to Triple-A Salt Lake. Even if Suarez acquits himself well in a starting role Tuesday, he could be headed back to the bullpen immediately thereafter with Chase Silseth (elbow) nearing a return from the 60-day injured list.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Overcomes dead arm phase

Suarez tossed two scoreless frames Monday versus the Rangers in his Cactus League debut after overcoming a dead arm phase, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Suarez has been behind other starters in Angels' camp while battling through dead arm issues, but it looks like he's over the hump. The left-hander currently appears on the outside looking in for a spot in the Halos' rotation, but he's out of options, so he could settle into a long relief role initially.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Loses arbitration case

Suarez will make $925,000 in 2024 after losing his arbitration case to the Angels on Friday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Suarez had an 8.29 ERA across 33.2 innings last season and was in his first year of arbitration eligibility. The 26-year-old lefty posted a 3.86 ERA in 45 appearances (34 starts) during the 2021-22 campaigns, and he'll likely need to get back to that form to have a chance of working out of the rotation regularly in 2024.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Opening Friday's contest

Suarez will serve as the Angels' opening pitcher for Friday's game against the Twins, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Suarez has given up two runs over 2.2 innings since returning from the injured list Sept. 11. He'll likely remain in the game for an inning or two before giving way to Davis Daniel, who is expected to work in bulk relief following his promotion from Triple-A Salt Lake.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Back from injured list

The Angels reinstated Suarez (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Monday.

Suarez has been on the shelf since early May and was pulled off his minor-league rehab assignment in late July, but he's apparently made significant progress behind the scenes at the Angels' spring training facility in Arizona over the past month. Before straining his left shoulder in May, Suarez had been part of the Anaheim rotation, but due to his extended absence, he'll most likely be eased back into the mix in a relief role.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Shut down from rehab stint

Suarez's minor-league rehab assignment has been shut down due to left shoulder soreness, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports.

Suarez recently kicked off the rehab stint and made two appearances for the Angels' ACL club, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over a combined 3.1 innings. However, he'll now take a step back due to the setback with his shoulder. Angels manager Phil Nevin indicated that the organization isn't concerned that Suarez will need to be held out for a long period, though it's not yet clear when the southpaw will begin throwing again.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Begins rehab assignment

Suarez (shoulder) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings for the Angels' Arizona Complex League team Tuesday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out two batters.

Suarez last pitched for the Angels on May 7, when he departed his start against Texas after 2.2 frames with left shoulder discomfort. He was moved to the 60-day IL on June 20 but recently began throwing to hitters before taking part in the ACL game Tuesday. Per MLB.com, Suarez will make another rehab start Sunday, this time with a full-season affiliate. It hasn't yet been decided whether the left-hander will work as a starter or a reliever upon his eventual return to the big club.

  • Angels' Jose Suarez: Shifted to 60-day IL

The Angels transferred Suarez (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

Suarez has been on the injured list since May 8 with a left shoulder strain, and his recent transfer to the 60-day IL will keep him out for at least the first week of July. The move opens up a spot for Kevin Padlo to be selected from Triple-A Salt Lake and join the Angels' infield.
