  • Mariners' Seby Zavala: Outrighted to Triple-A

Zavala cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Zavala was DFA'd by the Mariners on June 18 after slashing .154/.214/.282 with a 37.2 percent strikeout rate over 43 major-league plate appearances. The 30-year-old catcher will look to find his swing in Triple-A as he attempts to work his way back up to the majors.

  • Mariners' Seby Zavala: DFA'd by Seattle

The Mariners designated Zavala for assignment Tuesday.

Zavala has played in just 18 games this season and has a .154/.214/.282 slash line and 37.2 percent strikeout rate in 43 plate appearances. The Mariners already have Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver on the big-league roster, so the club will roll with two catchers going forward.

  • Mariners' Seby Zavala: Draws rare start Thursday

Zavala started at catcher and went 0-for-1 with a walk in an extra-inning loss to the White Sox on Thursday.

Making his first appearance of any kind since June 1, Zavala was able to reach base for the first time since May 23 via his one walk. The 30-year-old backstop has seen Cal Raleigh, who eventually replaced him in Thursday's game, draw the overwhelming majority of starts behind the dish, and more recently, Mitch Garver has filled in at catcher on a handful of occasions as well. Zavala's playing time figures to remain sparse, barring injury to one of the two veterans in front of him.

  • Mariners' Seby Zavala: Homers in Sunday's win

Zavala went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Athletics.

Zavala took Kyle Muller deep in the sixth inning for his first home run of the year. It was just his second RBI and third extra-base hit on the season, as he only has 31 plate appearances while operating as the team's backup catcher to Cal Raleigh.

  • Mariners' Seby Zavala: Produces in rare start

Zavala went 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a double and two runs during a win over the Rockies in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Zavala got in on the Mariners' much-needed offensive breakout in a major way, as he paced the team with his three-hit day. The reserve backstop had only 12 plate appearances on the season coming into Sunday, last having played April 13. Cal Raleigh, who belted his team-leading fifth home run in Sunday's second game, has understandably been laying claim to the bulk of playing time behind the dish, although both he and Zavala were in the lineup for the closing installment of the twin bill since Raleigh filled the designated-hitter role.

  • Mariners' Seby Zavala: Projected to make roster

Zavala is hitting just .158 across 23 Cactus League plate appearances, but he's nevertheless predicted to make the Opening Day roster by Daniel Kramer of MLB.com.

The 30-year-old was acquired from the Diamondbacks in a late-November trade to offer some experienced depth at catcher behind Cal Raleigh. The disappointing spring at the plate notwithstanding, Zavala, who holds a career .210 average and .622 OPS over 514 major-league plate appearances, is still slated to spell Raleigh on occasion against right-handed pitching, although Kramer points out the offseason arrival is expected to see less action than Tom Murphy did in that same No. 2 role a season ago.

  • Mariners' Seby Zavala: Headed to Seattle

The Mariners acquired Zavala from the Diamondbacks on Wednesday along with Carlos Vargas in exchange for Eugenio Suarez, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Zavala was a waiver claim by the Diamondbacks in September but made just four starts during his three and a half weeks with the team. The 30-year-old catcher has a career .622 OPS over parts of four major-league seasons spent mostly with the White Sox. He could open 2024 as Cal Raleigh's backup.

  • Diamondbacks' Seby Zavala: Claimed by Diamondbacks

Zavala was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Zavala was designated for assignment by the White Sox earlier this week but has found a new home and goes to a team in playoff contention. The 30-year-old is out of options, so he'll head straight to the major-league club.
