Some saw Ha-seong Kim having a good year for a loaded San Diego lineup but we are not aware of anyone who projected him to be the third-best fantasy batter on the team over the course of the full season. Kim set a professional career-best with his 38 steals and also surfaced the power and run-scoring abilities the marketplace hoped for from him in 2022. He has increased his ability to accept walks in each of his three seasons with San Diego and his batting average has improved in kind. His batting average has room for improvement, and it must come from him improving his outputs against righties as he has been a below-average producer against righties (95 wRC+ last season) while excelling against southpaws (148 wRC+ last season.) The triple position eligibility is going to further push up his draft day price for fantasy managers whereas he was one of the more incredible fantasy bargains this time last year.

Kim went 1-for-1 with two walks, two RBI and a stolen base in Monday's 6-1 victory against Oakland. Kim gave San Diego its first lead with an RBI single in the fourth inning and plated the team's final run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. The shortstop added a stolen base in the victory, giving him 14 on the campaign. Kim has struggled at the plate for much of the early part of the season but may be starting to heat up, going 4-for-12 with two homers, seven RBI and four walks over his past four contests.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Breaks slump Friday

Kim went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk and three total runs scored in Friday's 10-3 win over the Diamondbacks. Kim went 0-for-10 with two walks over the previous three games before breaking out Friday. The homer was his eighth of the year but just his second over the last 18 contests. The shortstop has a .223/.332/.393 slash line with 29 RBI, 34 runs scored and 13 stolen bases through 66 games. While his ratios are a bit adrift compared to his last two seasons, Kim continues to hold down a starting role and is delivering solid production in the counting stats.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Two hits, three RBI in win

Kim went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, three RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 7-3 win over the Royals. Kim led off the third inning with a triple before coming around to score on a Luis Arraez sacrifice fly. He'd then provide what proved to be the game-deciding hit in the fourth, driving in three runs with a base-clearing double to put the Padres ahead 5-3. Kim's now 4-for-10 with three extra-base hits in his last three games. After a slow start to the year, he's gotten his slash line up to .222/.332/.384 with seven homers, 31 runs scored, 27 RBI and 13 steals across 60 contests.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Produces team's lone run Wednesday

Kim went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to Miami on Wednesday. Kim's third-inning solo shot was the only run San Diego managed against Braxton Garrett and four Marlins relievers. The long ball was Kim's seventh through 231 plate appearances this season, putting him on pace to surpass last year's career-best total of 17 homers. The shortstop has added 13 stolen bases but has otherwise struggled with a .214/.326/.367 slash line.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Swipes two bags

Kim went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk and two stolen bases in Thursday's 6-4 extra-inning win over the Reds. Kim seemingly has a green light to run right now -- he's logged five steals over his last five games, going 5-for-15 with five walks in that span. The shortstop is up to 13 thefts on 14 attempts this season, putting him roughly on pace to match his total of 38 steals in 2023. Kim has a .216/.335/.369 slash line with six home runs, 22 RBI, 25 runs scored, four doubles and two triples over 52 games, but his recent hitting suggests he may be turning things around. Kim still figures to hit in the bottom half of the order most of the time.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Getting breather Wednesday

Kim is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Reds. Though double-play partner Xander Bogaerts will be in store for a long-term absence after he was diagnosed Wednesday with a fractured shoulder, Kim's absence from the lineup appears to be little more than a maintenance day. Tyler Wade will cover shortstop in Kim's stead.

The shortstop then added a triple in the fourth before coming around to score a second time as the Padres jumped back out to a two-run lead. Kim is still batting just .182 in April following the two-hit performance, though he's now hit safely in three of his last four contests. It also marked his second triple in his last three games.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Nabs second steal

Kim went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run and a stolen base in Thursday's 6-4 win against the Giants. Kim has reached base four times -- three via walk -- through three games this season, and he's stolen a base on half of those occasions. He recorded a career-high 38 steals in 47 attempts last year and appears to have the green light to run frequently this season. Kim has yet to get his bat going with just one hit in 10 at-bats, but the thefts have helped highlight what he can provide for fantasy managers.

Kim "is still experiencing some abdominal discomfort," Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. One way or another, Kim will not start Monday for a second straight day.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Scratched Sunday

Kim was scratched from Sunday's lineup against the Athletics for unspecified reasons. Kim was penciled in to start at second base and bat leadoff Sunday, per usual, but the Padres released an updated lineup that excludes him. Assuming the 27-year-old is dealing with an injury, the team should provide more information in the near future. Matthew Batten will shift to the keystone while Eguy Rosario starts at third base. Jurickson Profar is now batting atop the order.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Swift on basepaths Friday

Kim went 0-for-5 with a walk and a stolen base in Friday's 8-3 win against Oakland. Kim wasn't able to record a hit in the contest, but he still tied together something for his fantasy managers to smile about with a sixth-inning steal. The theft was his 36th of the season, tied for seventh-most in the majors. Kim has been tailor-made for the Padres' leadoff spot with an 85th percentile walk rate (11.9 percent) and 80th percentile sprint speed, and he's added some pop with 17 homers along with 58 RBI, 80 runs and a .266/.356/.408 slash line over 578 plate appearances. Kim did turn his ankle on his stolen base Friday but stayed in the game and is expected to play Saturday, per the Associated Press.
