The Cubs signed Nido to a one-year contract Wednesday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. The Cubs will swap out Yan Gomes -- who was designated for assignment -- for Nido. Nido was designated for assignment himself and eventually released by the Mets earlier this month but he quickly lands on his feet in Chicago, where he'll share catching duties with Miguel Amaya.... Tomas Nido: Cut loose by Mets
The Mets released Nido on Monday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. Nido cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week and is now free to sign with another organization. The veteran catcher has a career .564 OPS over parts of eight major-league seasons but is viewed as a strong defender, so he could draw interest as a backup catcher elsewhere.... See More ... Mets' Tomas Nido: Exits 40-man roster
The Mets designated Nido for assignment Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Francisco Alvarez is back from the injured list and the Mets have elected to keep Luis Torrens around as his backup. Given his $2.1 million salary, Nido might clear waivers and remain in the organization.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Remains out of lineup
Nido is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies. Nido continues to lose work behind the plate to Luis Torrens, with the former sitting for the fifth time in six games Sunday. Torrens went 1-for-3 in Saturday's 7-2 loss, and Nido appears to have lost his grip on the starting job behind home plate.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Sitting again Saturday
Nido isn't in the Mets' lineup for Saturday's game against the Phillies, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Nido will sit for the fourth time in five games Saturday as Luis Torrens draws the start behind the plate while batting ninth. Torrens has gone 3-for-10 with two homers in three games since joining the Mets on Sunday, and continued success from him could cause Nido to drop down the Mets' depth chart.... See More ... Mets' Tomas Nido: Taking seat Wednesday
Nido is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. After catching seven innings of the Mets' 6-3 win Tuesday night, Nido will get a breather Wednesday as the NL East rivals wrap up their series with a day game. Luis Torrens will check in behind the plate for Nido on Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Sitting out Monday
Nido is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Nationals. Nido will take a seat for the second day in a row while the Mets give Luis Torrens another turn behind the plate. Since Francisco Alvarez (thumb) landed on the injured list April 20, Nido has taken over as the Mets' primary backstop, but he hasn't offered much to get excited about for fantasy purposes. Through 31 games this season, Nido is hitting .225 with three home runs, zero stolen bases, nine runs and eight RBI.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Out of lineup Sunday
Nido is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. Nido started behind the plate for both of the first two games of the series, going 1-for-7 with one RBI and two strikeouts. He'll cede catching duties Sunday to Luis Torrens, who will bat ninth and his first start of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Swats third homer
Nido went 2-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Wednesday's loss to the Dodgers. The backstop took Elieser Hernandez deep in the fifth inning to get the Mets on the board, but a late collapse by the bullpen led to a 10-3 loss. Nido is slashing .233/.260/.370 in the majors this year with three homers and seven RBI in 28 games, and with Francisco Alvarez (thumb) ready to begin a rehab assignment, the clock is ticking on his time in a prominent role for the Mets.... Mets' Tomas Nido: Resting Wednesday
Nido is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. With the Mets wrapping up their series in Cleveland with a day game, Nido will receive a breather after catching eight innings of Tuesday's 7-6 loss. Omar Narvaez will spell Nido behind the plate Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Homers for team's only run
Nido went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Monday's loss to the Guardians. Nido accounted for New York's only run of the contest with a 405-foot solo shot in the third inning. The long ball was his second of the campaign and first since April 26. Nido is batting .241 on the season but has gone 9-for-30 (.300 average) over his past 10 games.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Not starting Thursday
Nido isn't in the Mets' lineup Thursday versus Philadelphia. Nido will catch a breather after going 2-for-4 with an RBI during Wednesday's loss. Omar Narvaez will fill in at catcher while batting ninth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Retreating to bench Wednesday
Nido is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Nido will get a breather for the day game after he started behind the dish in both of the first two contests of the series. Omar Narvaez will form a battery with starting pitcher Jose Quintana on Wednesday.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Getting rest Sunday
Nido is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rays. Nido will get a breather for the series finale after he caught both of the Mets' previous two games. Omar Narvaez will replace Nido behind the plate and will bat ninth.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Resting Thursday
Nido is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs. Nido will get a breather for Thursday's afternoon game after he caught all nine innings of Wednesday's 1-0 loss. Omar Narvaez will handle catching duties in the series finale.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Taking control of catching gig
Nido will start at catcher and bat ninth Monday against the Cubs, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Nido is behind the plate for the fourth time in five games and appears to be the Mets' preferred option at catcher over Omar Narvaez while Francisco Alvarez (thumb) is on the shelf. Though he's well regarded for his framing and ability to manage the Mets' pitching staff, Nido is a career .213 hitter and offers little power or speed, making him uninteresting for fantasy purposes outside of NL-only leagues.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Belts first homer
Nido went 2-for-3 with a double and a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Cardinals. The 30-year-old backstop took Miles Mikolas deep in the fifth inning to get the Mets on the board and give Nido his first homer in the majors since Sept. 2022. He had a hot start to the season at Triple-A and hasn't slowed down in the majors yet, going 3-for-9 while starting three of the last five games. With Omar Narvaez struggling both at the plate and in controlling the running game, the door is open for Nido to take on a significant role while Francisco Alvarez (thumb) is on the shelf.... Mets' Tomas Nido: Makes defensive impact Sunday
Nido went 1-for-3 with a strikeout in Sunday's loss to the Dodgers. Making his first start of the season for the Mets and batting ninth, Nido threw out Will Smith attempting to swipe second base to end the third inning -- a noteworthy event only because Francisco Alvarez (thumb) and Omar Narvaez had gone a combined 0-for-28 to begin the season in throwing out base stealers. With Alvarez sidelined and Narvaez batting just .200 (5-for-25), Nido's defense could earn him more than just a short-side platoon role while he's in the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Joins big club
The Mets called up Nido from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The move comes with the Mets placing Francisco Alvarez (thumb) on the IL. Nido has played well with Triple-A Syracuse this season, slashing .345/.345/.517 with two doubles, one home run and two RBI over 30 plate appearances. With Alvarez on the shelf, Nido will serve as the Mets' backup catcher behind Omar Narvaez.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Tomas Nido: Won't be on Opening Day roster
The Mets informed Nido on Saturday that he won't be included on the team's Opening Day roster, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Nido struggled in his limited time in the majors last season, posting a .125 batting average across 61 plate appearances. He was moved off the 40-man roster last June and was attending big-league camp as a non-roster invitee, so it's not too surprising that the Mets elected to keep Omar Narvaez as their No. 2 catcher ahead of Nido....
