Player Outlook
In a disappointing season for the Yankees as a team, Gleyber Torres was a bright spot, posting his best campaign since the 2019 juiced-ball year. He shaved his strikeout rate to a career-low 14.6% over a career-high 672 plate appearances. Torres added just one home run to his 2022 total even while seeing an additional 100 plate appearances, but he's now reached 24 homers in four of his five full seasons -- not game-changing power, but nothing to sneeze at either. Add in double-digit steals each of the last three seasons and Torres is back on the right track, having put his age-24 struggles in 2021 in the rearview mirror. His defense is another story, as shortstop is fully off the table at this point and his marks at second base leave a lot to be desired. Those issues could affect his playing time eventually. For now, Torres will remain an everyday presence in the top half of the Yankee lineup.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Was available Friday

Manager Aaron Boone indicated after Friday's game that Torres (groin) was available off the bench, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Jahmai Jones or Oswaldo Cabrera would likely enter the lineup if Torres remains on the bench.

Torres (groin) was deemed day-to-day after his MRI came back clean Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Torres was lifted from Thursday's game as a precaution due to right groin discomfort, and an MRI confirmed that the injury isn't anything serious. Still, Torres may need a day or two for recovery, which could open up more work for Oswaldo Cabrera and Jahmai Jones.

Torres (groin) did not suffer a serious injury Thursday against the Orioles, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Torres was removed in the sixth inning, though manager Aaron Boone noted that he was taking a cautious approach and that the issue isn't expected to be serious. Nevertheless, it will be worth confirming that Torres will be available Friday as the Yankees start a series against Atlanta.

Torres left in the sixth inning of Thursday's game versus the Orioles due to tightness in his right groin. • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Goes deep in rout

Torres went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run, an additional run and a walk Wednesday in an 11-5 victory against Kansas City. Torres further busted open the game for the Yankees with a three-run shot off Daniel Lynch in the seventh inning. The long ball was his second in June and his sixth overall this season. Four of the long balls have come over his past 21 contests after Torres went deep just twice over his initial 49 games.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Pops fifth homer

Torres went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Twins. He took Bailey Ober deep in the second inning to get the Yankees on the board, giving Torres his fifth long ball of the year. The second baseman has hit safely in five straight games and 10 of the last 11 as he shows signs of emerging from his season-long slump -- over that 11-game stretch he's slashing .297/.372/.514 with two doubles and two homers.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Goes yard in win

Torres went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-0 win over the Padres. Torres has gone 12-for-45 (.267) over his last 12 contests, adding three homers and eight RBI in that span. The second baseman started the year slow, but he's come around over the last couple of weeks while retaining a near-everyday role. For the season, he's slashing .221/.298/.318 with four homers, 15 RBI, 25 runs scored, seven doubles and four stolen bases over 219 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Swipes bag in win

Torres went 1-for-3 with a walk, one stolen base and one run scored in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Twins. Torres' steal was his first since April 13. The second baseman has had a modest May, batting .205 (9-for-44) with two home runs and four RBI. That's a little worse than his .216 average for the season, and he's added a poor .574 OPS with four steals, two home runs, 10 RBI, 19 runs scored and four doubles through 183 plate appearances. While Torres has struggled, he remains the Yankees' near-everyday starter at the keystone.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Snaps slump with key homer

Torres went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Sunday's 10-6 win over Tampa Bay. Torres came into the contest batting .156 through 10 games in May and failed to reach base in his first three plate appearances Sunday. However, he came up big in the eighth inning, smashing a three-run shot to increase the Yankees' lead to 9-5. The long ball was just his second of the season, which is a pretty significant drop-off after he went deep 25 times in 158 contests last year.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Resting Saturday

Torres is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Rays, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. Torres will be held out of the lineup for the first time since April 20 against Tampa Bay, though he did pinch hit in that contest. Torres is 5-for-30 with five walks and a solo home run in May, and he is coming off an 0-for-4 showing with one strikeout in Friday's win. Oswaldo Cabrera will shift to second base Saturday while Jon Berti gets the start at third.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Cranks first home run

Torres went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 7-2 loss to the Orioles. Torres led off the sixth inning with a 418-foot shot to center field off Keegan Akin, cutting the Yankees' deficit to 7-2. While it didn't ultimately impact the final score, the home run was certainly a weight off of Torres' shoulders -- he'd gone 32 games without a long ball to start the campaign, a homerless streak of 53 regular-season games if you go back to Torres' last home run Sept. 7. The 27-year-old second baseman is now slashing a disappointing .218/.295/.274 to open the year with 15 runs scored, seven RBI and three stolen bases.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Swipes third bag

Torres went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base in Saturday's win over Cleveland in Game 2 of the doubleheader. He also drew a walk. The second baseman would then come around to score a second time in the fifth, marking just the second time this season in which he's scored two runs in a game. Torres has now hit safely in back-to-back contests, though he's still batting just .222 in April with two RBI, two stolen bases and four runs scored.

The second baseman also added a double late and has now hit safely in three straight. After batting just .133 through four games in March, Torres is now batting .300 in April with two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Nabs first steal

Torres went 1-for-4 with a walk, two runs and a stolen base in Sunday's 4-3 victory versus the Astros. Torres used his legs to help generate the game-winning run, following a two-out, ninth-inning single with a swipe of second base before sprinting home on a Juan Soto single to left field. The theft was Torres' first of the campaign as he seeks to reach double-digit steals for the third straight year. The second baseman is off to a slow start to the campaign otherwise, however, slashing just .133/.316/.133 without an extra-base hit through 19 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Leading off Saturday

Torres will start at second base and lead off Saturday against the Astros. A pitch off his right thumb forced Torres from Friday's game, but X-rays were negative and it appears the second baseman won't even miss a start as a result of the injury. Torres, who is 0-for-7 with a walk and a run scored through two games this season, appears set to handle primary leadoff duties in the absence of DJ LeMahieu (foot), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday.

  • Yankees' Gleyber Torres: X-rays negative

X-rays on Torres' right thumb came back negative Friday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. Torres took a pitch off his right thumb in the top of the seventh inning of Friday's contest and initially remained in the game to run around the bases. However, he requested to be removed during the bottom of the seventh due to concerns over his ability to throw the ball. It seems the 27-year-old second baseman was able to escape without any serious damage to his thumb, but he may still sit out a game or two to recover.
