Starling Marte was limited to only 86 games as he missed time due to migraines, then had his season end in early August due to a right groin issue. It's unclear if Marte's injury is related to the double-groin surgery he underwent in November 2022, but he reportedly does not need more offseason surgery and will be healthy in the spring. After posting a wRC+ between 108 and 134 the previous five seasons, Marte's 76 mark was a career low. Marte's batted ball skills were as good, or better than the previous two seasons where he posted a 132 and 134 wRC+. Marte's average exit velocity was its highest since 2019, and his hard-hit rate was a career best. Barrel percentage was down a bit, piggybacking hitting fewer fly balls. Marte was 24-for-28 in stolen base attempts. All signs point to a rebound but expecting a full bounce back from an injury-prone 35-year-old is a slippery slope. There are ample encouraging signs to take a chance, just don't bank on a full return, and have a backup plan at the ready.

  • Mets' Starling Marte: Scratched due to knee issue

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Marte was scratched from the lineup prior to Wednesday's game in Washington due to a right knee issue, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Though he played all nine innings of Tuesday's 6-3 win while going 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk, two runs and two RBI, Marte informed the Mets on Wednesday that his knee was bothering him at points during the previous night's game. The Mets elected to scratch Marte from the lineup for the series finale as a matter of precaution, but Mendoza said that he has a low level of concern for the outfielder's injury. Marte will still be available off the bench Wednesday, and with off days Thursday and Friday, the expectation is that he'll be back in the lineup Saturday for the start of the Mets' two-game series in London versus the Phillies.
