• With Thursday's cancellation of the remainder of the preseason, the games-lost count is up to 97. It's still only exhibition games at this point, but real games are just around the corner.

• Speaking of the preseason schedule, some folks in Kansas City aren't exactly thrilled that they've lost their preseason game. And they're not handling it well. [NHL in Kansas City]

• Here is NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly talking to the Associated Press about what needs to happen for progress to be made:

"I'll reserve judgment on my sense of 'optimism' [or not] until we see how our meetings unfold," said Daily. "Ultimately, we have to meet and talk to make a deal. But until we make progress and see some compromise from the Union of their economic position, we won't be going anywhere fast."

Encouraged yet? Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that key economic matters (the most important part of these talks) are going to be the focal point of this weekend's meetings. [Associated Press]

• Philadelphia Flyers forward Max Talbot and Buffalo Sabres forward Jason Pominville starred in the first game of the Tournee des Joueurs, a barnstorming tournament put together by Talbot and Bruno Gervais to help raise money for charity. The first game was in a suburban Montreal rink on Thursday night with Talbot's "red" Montreal team picking up a 7-4 victory of a team of players from Quebec. More games will be played next week. • It looks like New York Islanders forward John Tavares will be joining his teammate, Mark Streit, in Switzerland for the duration of the lockout. [Katie Strang on Twitter]
