Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Called up from Triple-A
The Dodgers recalled Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday.
Shortstop Mookie Betts (hand) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move, but Vargas isn't expected to get the first chance to replace the seven-time All-Star in the Dodgers' everyday lineup. Instead, manager Dave Roberts suggested after Sunday's 3-0 win over the Royals that Miguel Rojas would likely step in as the Dodgers' primary shortstop, so Vargas could be limited to the short-side platoon role in the corner outfield that he previously held during his three-plus-week stay with the big club earlier in the season. Vargas saw extended time at second base with the Dodgers and Oklahoma City in 2023, but he's played exclusively in left field and at designated hitter in 2024.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Demotion official
The Dodgers optioned Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.
With Cavan Biggio arriving in Los Angeles after being acquired from the Blue Jays earlier Wednesday, Vargas will head back to Triple-A to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster. During his stay with the Dodgers following his promotion from Triple-A on May 17, Vargas started in just six games and hit .250 with one home run and one stolen base over 23 plate appearances.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Set to return to minors
The Dodgers are expected to option Vargas to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
He'll be giving up his spot on the active roster to Cavan Biggio, who was acquired via trade with the Blue Jays earlier Wednesday. Vargas had been up with the big club for nearly a month but didn't play much, starting just six of 22 games. He'll receive regular reps at Oklahoma City.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Swipes bag Thursday
Vargas went 1-for-4 with a double, a walk, a stolen base and a run in Thursday's 11-7 victory versus Pittsburgh.
Vargas started in left field and batted eighth in the order. He hit safely in his fourth straight game with a fourth-inning double and also stole a base and scored after reaching on a fielder's choice in the fifth. Vargas has held his own with a .250/.318/.550 slash line, a homer, three doubles, three RBI, five runs and a steal over 22 plate appearances this season. He's currently on the short side of a platoon with Jason Heyward -- Vargas has started each of Los Angeles' past three games against a left-handed starter while sitting out the team's past four contests against a right-hander.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Launches first homer
Vargas went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader sweep of the Mets.
Getting the start in left field and batting seventh, Vargas took Jose Quintana deep in the sixth inning for his first long ball in the majors this season. The 24-year-old has seen little action since getting called up in mid-May, going 2-for-10 over four games, but both hits have gone for extra bases.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Officially promoted
The Dodgers recalled Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday.
Vargas has served as Oklahoma City's left fielder all season, slashing .302/.442/.590 with eight homers and 39 RBI across 181 plate appearances. The 24-year-old hasn't found the same success in the majors with a .640 OPS, but he could still draw starts in the outfield on days the Dodgers are matched up against a left-handed starter.

The Dodgers are also set to activate Jason Heyward (back) from the injured list. There's no word yet on what the corresponding moves will be, but a demotion for James Outman is one scenario. Vargas has been used exclusively in left field with Triple-A Oklahoma City this season, slashing .295/.437/.583 with eight home runs and eight stolen bases. Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City by the Dodgers on Saturday, J.P. Hoornstra of DodgersNation.com reports.
Vargas traveled with the Dodgers to South Korea for their upcoming series versus the Padres, but he will not be on the active roster. The 24-year-old has been working out in left field this spring and figures to continue playing the outfield while at OKC.

Vargas is coming into Dodgers camp as a left fielder, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.
Vargas has been an infielder primarily but has played a little left field the previous two seasons. Whether this is a permanent position switch or just getting the 24-year-old more comfortable in the spot where he has the best shot to see action in 2024 is not clear. Vargas is likely headed to Triple-A Oklahoma City to begin this season either way, as Teoscar Hernandez is pegged as the Dodgers' regular left fielder.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Might play more outfield
Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said Wednesday that Vargas could see more action in the outfield moving forward, Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times reports.
Vargas slumped his way out of the second base job in Los Angeles before the midway point of the 2023 season and the Dodgers have grown more comfortable using Mookie Betts at that position, especially against right-handed pitching. Vargas, accordingly, is going to have to find a different avenue to get back to a regular major-league role in 2024. The 23-year-old boasts a .310/.392/.487 career minor-league batting line and remains an important long-term piece for the reigning NL West champs. He made seven starts in left field down the stretch this summer with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Optioned amid slump
Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
The Dodgers' top prospect entering the season, Vargas is slashing .146/.273/.293 with two home runs and one steal in 29 games since June 1. His 21 percent strikeout rate and 13 percent walk rate are right in line with expectations, but he has been a bit unlucky on balls in play this season (.224 BABIP) and could maybe use a mental reset. Chris Taylor (knee) is expected to be activated from the injured list after the All-Star break.
