Irvin allowed three runs in the first two innings and then five runs in a disastrous fifth frame that included a three-run home run by Jose Ramirez. An error in the fifth resulted in four of the runs being unearned, but the lefty allowed 10 hard-hit balls and only generated five swinging strikes in his second consecutive rough outing. Irvin has yielded 13 runs (nine earned) in those two outings and now owns a 3.74 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 74:15 K:BB in 77 innings this season. The 30-year-old will try to get back on track in a home matchup against the Rangers this weekend.

Irvin had a hard time with the Yankees' lineup for much of the afternoon, allowing runs in three of the five innings in which he appeared before being relieved by Bryan Baker. Irvin surrendered two home runs in the contest, something he hadn't done in any of his previous 13 outings, while he also matched his season high with five runs allowed. Irvin had gone at least five innings in four consecutive starts prior to Thursday's game and will look to bounce back next week when the Orioles take on the Guardians in Baltimore.

Irvin allowed hits to the first three batters in the game, including back-to-back doubles that immediately put the Orioles in a two-run hole. He was able to piece things together from there, allowing only one more earned run and striking out a season-high eight batters to keep the O's in the game. It's the third-straight game Irvin has allowed eight or more hits, though it's just the second time in his last 11 outings he's given up as many as three earned runs, raising his ERA to 3.03 through 68.1 innings. He's next slated to take the hill early next week when the Orioles travel to New York for a showdown against the first-place Yankees.

Three straight singles in the sixth inning kept Irvin from recording his fifth quality start of the season, but the southpaw did tie his season high in strikeouts. He hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last 10 appearances (eight starts) dating back to April 15, posting a 1.88 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 36:7 K:BB through 52.2 innings over that stretch. Irvin will look to continue his breakout campaign in his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against Atlanta.

Irvin will start on regular rest, so it's not particularly notable that he will take the ball for Baltimore on Friday. However, that also moves Kyle Bradish back at least one more game, giving him multiple extra days of rest after Cade Povich took Bradish's original turn Thursday.

Irvin entered the seventh with a two-run lead having allowed only a single run, but a leadoff homer in the inning by Jose Caballero cut the lead in half, and the hurler was pulled after facing one more batter prior to the lineup turning back over for the Rays. It was Irvin's first quality start since May 3, though he's allowed no more than three earned runs in each of his last nine games and has posted five scoreless outings during that span. Throughout that stretch, he's thrown 47 innings with a 1.72 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 30 strikeouts. Irvin's next start is tentatively slated for next weekend against these same Rays when the Orioles return the favor and make the trek to Tampa.

The 30-year-old southpaw was sharp, not allowing an extra-base hit and matching his season best with six strikeouts. The three walks were uncharacteristic for Irvin, who allowed just one free pass over his previous 24.1 innings pitched. After allowing nine earned runs over his first two starts of the season, Irvin has yielded just seven earned runs over his past eight starts, good for a 1.55 ERA in that span. He will look to keep it rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for this weekend in Tampa.

As expected, Irvin will draw back into the rotation as a replacement for John Means (forearm), who was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday. Though he made his last two appearances in relief, Irvin shouldn't be in line for any major workload restrictions Monday after he covered 3.1 innings out of the bullpen last Wednesday against the Cardinals. Over his prior seven starts with Baltimore this season, Irvin went 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB in 40.1 innings.
