Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Optioned to Triple-A
The Red Sox optioned Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.
The move corresponds with Wilyer Abreu (ankle) being reinstated from the injured list. Dalbec has struggled at the plate since being recalled by the Red Sox on June 2, going 4-for-30 with four RBI and a 44.1 percent strikeout rate. He'll look to get his swing right in Triple-A, where he is slashing .245/.330/.529 with eight home runs and 21 RBI over 115 plate appearances.

Dalbec will stay in the lineup for the fourth time in five games, making his second start at first base during that stretch while the lefty-hitting Dominic Smith hits the bench against Phillies southpaw Cristopher Sanchez. Though Dalbec had also recently picked up starts at third base and in right field, he likely won't see many more opportunities at those positions moving forward after Masataka Yoshida returned from the injured list Tuesday and after Tyler O'Neill (knee) rejoined the lineup Wednesday following a three-game absence. Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Swats first homer of 2024
Dalbec went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the White Sox.
Getting the start in right field and batting seventh, the 28-year-old took Nick Nastrini deep in the fifth inning for Boston's only offense, and Dalbec's first long ball in the majors this season. He's flashed plenty of power in the minors -- in his last 140 games for Triple-A Worcester, he's slugged 41 homers -- but that hasn't yet translated to the game's highest level with any consistency. He'll lose playing time, and likely his spot on the 26-man roster, when players like Tyler O'Neill (knee), Wilyer Abreu (ankle) and Masataka Yoshida (thumb) are back in action, as Dalbec's .159/.243/.238 slash line in 28 games for the Red Sox makes a poor case to keep him around.

Dalbec got his first start since being called up Sunday, filling in at right field -- a position he hadn't played at the MLB level before -- with Wilyer Abreu (ankle) sidelined. Dalbec plated Rafael Devers and Connor Wong on a fourth-inning single for his only hit of the day. After being demoted to Triple-A in early May, Dalbec heated up at the plate during his time at Worcester, slashing .253/.336/.526 with seven home runs in his last 24 games prior to his call-up. Dalbec has a long track record of mashing at the Triple-A level, but his massive strikeout rates across various stints in the majors over the last few seasons likely mean that the ship has sailed on him re-emerging as an everyday player for the Red Sox. However, while he's up with the big club, the right-handed-hitting Dalbec could occupy the short side of a platoon at first base or in right field with left-handed hitters Dominic Smith and Wilyer Abreu.

The Red Sox will option Dalbec to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
The 28-year-old no longer had a path to clear playing time after the Red Sox signed Dominic Smith to split time at first base with Garrett Cooper, so Dalbec will head to the minors to serve as an organizational depth piece. He slashed just .137/.200/.176 across 56 plate appearances with Boston this season.

Dalbec entered Tuesday's 4-0 win over the Giants in the bottom of the fifth inning after Garrett Cooper was hit by a pitch on the wrist. Dalbec was hit by a pitch and subsequently stole a base in his lone plate appearance.

Dalbec's bat, like many others in the lineup, came alive in the blowout win. His season-opening struggles are epic -- zero hits in his first 19 at-bats and one in the first 32 -- but the corner infielder now has a four-game hit streak (5-for-15). However, it may be too late save his job as the team's primary fill-in at first base while Triston Casas (ribs, 60-day IL) is sidelined. The Red Sox acquired Garrett Cooper from the Cubs on Saturday, and he is expected to get the bulk of the starts at first base until Casas is ready to return. Cooper is expected to be activated in time for Tuesday's series opener against the Giants.

The day after Boston learned it would be without primary first baseman Triston Casas (fractured rib) for a significant stretch of time, Dalbec replaced him at first base. Unfortunately, Dalbec's season-opening struggles continued. He's now 1-for-32 (.031) with 18 strikeouts.
