The Mariners designated Taveras for assignment Monday.
Taveras was scooped up by the Mariners via waivers in early May after the Rangers had removed him from their 40-man roster. However, he's now been designated for assignment again after putting up a lowly .470 OPS in 28 contests with Seattle. Another team may be willing to dedicate a waiver claim to Taveras, though his $4.75 million salary will likely deter some suitors.

Taveras singled and stole a base in the sixth inning before smacking a two-run homer off Mike Vasil in the eighth that put Seattle ahead for good. The homer is Taveras' first in 13 games with the Mariners -- his last long ball came on April 24 with the Rangers. Overall, the 26-year-old Taveras is slashing .220/.242/.333 with 14 RBI, 11 runs scored and eight stolen bases across 130 plate appearances between Texas and Seattle this year.

Taveras will start in right field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the White Sox.
Since being claimed off waivers from the Rangers and getting added to the active roster May 7, Taveras has started in right field in all but one of the Mariners' ensuing 13 games. However, Taveras has largely failed to capitalize on the opportunity, as he's slashing just .150/.186/.225 with zero home runs, one stolen base, four RBI and three runs while striking out at a 38.6 percent clip. Though the Mariners don't have many appealing alternatives available, Taveras' hold on an everyday role could nonetheless be tenuous if he continues to flounder at the plate.

Seattle will be responsible for the remainder of the $4.75 million Taveras is owed in 2025, and it will retain control of the outfielder through the 2027 season. Taveras has slashed only .241/.259/.342 for Texas this season and has a career OPS of .661, but the switch-hitting 26-year-old is a viable depth option for a team that has Victor Robles (shoulder) and Luke Raley (oblique) on the injured list and Randy Arozarena (hamstring) banged up. Taveras could see ample playing time in right field for the Mariners.

Taveras was placed on outright waivers by the Rangers on Sunday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Taveras has produced a .241 average with one home run, eight RBI, seven runs scored and six stolen bases over 79 at-bats with Texas this season. If he gets claimed off waivers by another team, that team will assume the balance of the outfielder's $4.75 million contract this season. Taveras, who had been held out of the starting nine the previous three games, returned to action and belted his first homer of the season. The blast pushed his batting average up to .200 (13-for-65) with a 1:19 BB:K, which partially explains why Kevin Pillar, Josh Smith and Dustin Harris started in center field the previous three contests. The switch-hitting Taveras typically sits against lefties, but the Rangers faces righties in two of those three games.
