Athletics' Zack Gelof: Could see time in center field
Gelof could get looks in center field in addition to reps at second base, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Gelof was spotted trotting out to center field during batting practice Monday, and skipper Mark Kotsay elaborated further on Gelof's potential utility role in spring training and heading into the 2026 season. "I do think Zack can play the outfield," said Kotsay. "We've seen Zack be a plus defender. There could be a role that exists on this club where Zack is on the roster." Gallegos notes that Jeff McNeil is in line to see everyday opportunities at second base, which will make the path for playing time more difficult for Gelof, who struggled in 2024 and couldn't stay healthy in 2025. However, the 26-year-old has always been a strong defender with plus speed, which will undoubtedly help as he learns the outfield. "With how the last two years have gone, I definitely want to lean into my athleticism," said Gelof. "Be the best baserunner on the team. Defensively, bring that aspect. I know I can hit, but the bare minimum is being a winning player. That's what I bring. I need to bring that to this team, so that's what I'm going to do."

Athletics' Jack Perkins: Role undetermined
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said last week that Perkins (shoulder) will enter camp as a starting pitcher, but the team has yet to decide whether he'll be a starter or reliever in 2026, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
"He's a weapon that we have yet to determine the path," Kotsay said. Perkins was much more effective as a reliever (2.75 ERA, 24.7 percent strikeout rate) than as a starter (5.68 ERA, 21.4 percent strikeout rate) during his time with the Athletics last season, but the 26-year-old is one of the A's better young arms so the team doesn't want to relegate him to a relief role just yet. The right-handed Perkins ended last season on the injured list with a right shoulder strain, and it's not clear if he has any restrictions at the start of camp.

Athletics' Jacob Lopez: Tosses side session Monday
Lopez (elbow) completed a bullpen session Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Lopez missed the final month and change of the 2025 season due to a left elbow flexor strain, but he appears to have had a normal offseason and doesn't seem to be facing any restrictions in the early stages of camp. The 27-year-old lefty should be guaranteed a rotation spot heading into 2026 after he was one of the few bright spots for a wretched Athletics pitching staff last season with a 4.08 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 19.0 K-BB% over 92.2 innings.

Athletics' Lawrence Butler: Completes live BP session
Butler (knees) took part in a live batting practice session during Monday's full-squad workout, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Butler's ability to face live pitching early on in camp confirms that he's back to full health in advance of the 2026 campaign. Back on Oct. 3, the outfielder underwent surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee and received a platelet-rich plasma injection to address tendinitis in his left knee, but he seems to have had a relatively normal offseason. After he broke out with an .807 OPS in 2024, Butler's knee problems may have played a factor in his downturn in productivity in 2025, when he slashed .234/.306/.404 and saw his strikeout rate jump more than four percentage points to 28.4 percent. Despite the nearly 100-point drop in his OPS, Butler still came through with strong numbers in the counting categories (21 home runs, 22 steals, 83 runs, 63 RBI).

Athletics' A.J. Causey: Shipped to Sacramento
The Royals traded Causey to the Athletics on Thursday in exchange for Mitch Spence.
Causey spent time with the Royals' High-A and Double-A affiliates in 2025, posting a 1.72 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 73.1 innings across the two levels. The 23-year-old righty will likely begin his tenure with the Athletics in Double-A and aim to reach Triple-A Las Vegas at some point this summer.

Athletics' Zack Gelof: Feels healthy for spring
Gelof (shoulder) said Wednesday that he's "feeling healthy, feeling ready to go" and expects to be a full participant when he reports to spring training later this week, Jason Burke of SI.com reports.
After posting 14 home runs and 14 steals in just 69 games as a rookie in 2023, Gelof looked to be a central figure in the Athletics' rebuilding effort, but injuries and an ability to make consistent contact against big-league pitching have left his future murky. He didn't make his 2025 big-league debut until early July while recovering from a fractured bone in his right wrist and a stress reaction in his ribs, then slashed just .174/.230/.272 with a 45.5 percent strikeout rate over 101 plate appearances between two stints with the Athletics before he was shut down in late September due to a dislocated left shoulder. He appears to be healthy again following surgery on the shoulder, but Gelof may need a strong showing at the plate during Cactus League play to make a compelling case for a spot on the Athletics' Opening Day roster.

Athletics' Mitch Spence: Pushed off 40-man
The Athletics designated Spence for assignment Tuesday.
With Scott Barlow and Aaron Civale officially signing one-year deals with the A's on Tuesday, Spence and Grant Holman (finger) will both lose their place on the 40-man roster. Spence made 32 appearances (eight starts) with the Athletics in 2025, turning in a 5.10 ERA and 1.44 WHIP to go with a 66:26 K:BB through 84.2 innings. Assuming he clears waivers, the 27-year-old righty will open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Athletics' Grant Holman: Designated for assignment
The Athletics designated Holman (finger/shoulder) for assignment Tuesday.
Holman and Mitch Spence will both lose their places on the 40-man roster to make room for new signees Scott Barlow and Aaron Civale. Holman posted a 5.09 ERA and 1.52 WHIP over 23 innings with the A's in 2025 before suffering a season-ending finger injury in June. It's unclear where he stands in his recovery, but he now seems likely to open the new season in the minor leagues.

Athletics' Aaron Civale: Lands in Sacramento
Civale agreed to a one-year $6 million contract with the A's on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
The 30-year-old right-hander split the 2025 campaign between the Brewers, White Sox and Cubs, finishing the regular season with a 4.85 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 88:33 K:BB across 102 innings. Civale started in 18 of those 23 appearances last year and is a safe bet to work out of the Athletics' rotation, providing another veteran presence in a unit that's unsettled at the back end.

Athletics' Scott Barlow: Nets one-year deal with Athletics
The Athletics signed Barlow to a one-year, $2 million contract Friday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
He will have the opportunity to earn an additional $1.3 million in incentives. Barlow spent the 2025 season with the Reds, finishing the regular season with a 4.21 ERA and 75:45 K:BB over 68.1 innings. The 33-year-old hasn't had an ERA below 4.21 or WHIP below 1.36 since 2022, but with 59 career saves, Barlow has easily the most closer experience on the Athletics' roster. That alone should put him in the mix for saves, but even if Barlow wins the job, he will be a poor bet to retain it.

Athletics' Max Schuemann: DFA'd by A's
The Athletics designated Schuemann for assignment on Friday.
Schuemann will lose his spot on the 40-man roster for the A's to claim Andy Ibanez off waivers. Schuemann appeared in 101 big-league games last season, slashing .197/.295/.273 with two home runs, seven stolen bases, 13 RBI, 20 runs scored and a 22:35 BB:K across 213 plate appearances.

Athletics' Andy Ibanez: Claimed by Athletics
The Athletics claimed Ibanez off waivers from the Dodgers on Friday, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.
The Dodgers signed Ibanez to a one-year, $1.2 million contract in early January but then designated him for assignment less than a month later. He'll now head to the Athletics and should be in the mix for playing time at third base. Ibanez holds a career .280/.327/.452 slash line versus left-handed pitching.

Athletics' Jamie Arnold: Adds to impressive arsenal
Arnold expanded his repertoire at Driveline this winter, adding a cutter and a kick changeup, Jesus Cano of Baseball America reports.
The No. 11 pick in the 2025 First-Year Player Draft, Arnold slipped to the Athletics and they swooped in and added the 6-foot-1 southpaw. Arnold already had an excellent track record and pitch mix, and now he boasts a pair of changeups, as he already had a strong splitter. His mid-90s fastball and monster mid-80s slider are Arnold's go-to offerings, but now he has even more weapons at his disposal. Arnold said "this is the best I've ever felt," which is hyperbole, but at least it's good to know he's heading to spring training at the peak of his powers. He will likely be assigned to High-A or Double-A, and Arnold could join the big-league rotation sometime this summer if he pitches to expectations.

Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Signs seven-year, $70M extension
The Athletics signed Wilson to a seven-year, $70 million contract extension Friday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The deal includes a club option for 2033.
Wilson finished runner-up to teammate Nick Kurtz in the American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2025 after slashing .311/.355/.444 with 13 home runs, five stolen bases and a 27:39 BB:K over 125 contests in his first full major-league season. The 23-year-old's upside is capped due to his lack of power and mediocre defense at shortstop, but Wilson has some of the best contact skills in the game. It's a contract that should turn out to be very team-friendly as long as he stays healthy.

Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Working on bulking up
Wilson said earlier this month that adding strength has "been the main focus for the last couple of offseasons now," Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Wilson showed a little more pop than expected in 2025, slugging 13 home runs. Power is considered the weakest part of his offensive game, though, so he's working on adding a little bulk this winter. Still, fantasy managers should consider it a bonus if they get double-digit home runs out of Wilson again in 2026, as he is most likely to provide an elite batting average but not much else.

Athletics' Leo De Vries: Nets invite to spring training
The Athletics have extended De Vries an invitation to big-league spring training.
The Athletics also invited Jamie Arnold and Gage Jump, among others, to major-league camp. Acquired from the Padres in the trade that sent Mason Miller to San Diego, De Vries slashed .255/.355/.451 with 15 home runs, 11 stolen bases and a 66:107 BB:K over 118 games between the High-A and Double-A levels in 2025. De Vries' best production came after a late-season promotion to Double-A Midland, and he'll likely head back there to begin the 2026 season. Just 19 years old, De Vries is not a finished product but has some of the highest upside of any position player in the minors.
