  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Playing catch Monday

Musgrove (elbow) will play catch Monday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Musgrove has been throwing plyometric balls in recent days, but Monday marks his first time playing catch since he landed on the 15-day injured list at the beginning of the month. Surgery hasn't been ruled out down the road for the right-hander, but he'll attempt to come back from the IL without an operation. Even if the non-surgical route proves effective for Musgrove, he's still several weeks away from a potential return.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Takes step toward return

Musgrove (elbow) lightly threw weighted plyometric balls Thursday, MLB.com reports.

A previous report indicated Musgrove could play catch around the middle of the week, but it turns out the extent of his throwing was the work he did with the plyo balls. The workout was, however, a step in his progression toward playing catch, which could happen before the end of the month. Musgrove doesn't seem close to taking part in a rehab assignment and isn't likely to be activated off the 15-day injured list until after the All-Star break.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Slated to throw this week

Musgrove (elbow) is expected to play catch Wednesday or Thursday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Musgrove will throw for the first time since he went on the injured list June 1 due to a bone spur in his right elbow. The right-hander acknowledged that his new slider may have contributed to the issue and indicated Saturday that he is considering how to alter either the grip or his wrist action on the pitch. Musgrove also shared that he is working to change the landing on his delivery in order to reduce the stress on his arm. The veteran hurler could still need surgery to remove the bone spur, but even if he avoids that scenario, he probably won't be ready to rejoin the Padres until late July.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Could resume throwing soon

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Friday that Musgrove (elbow) is getting closer to picking up a ball and starting a throwing program, per MLB.com.

Musgrove was diagnosed with a bone spur in his right elbow in early June and consequently received PRP and cortisone injections. While Shildt said Friday that the veteran pitcher could resume throwing soon, he didn't give specifics on a timeline. Given that Musgrove dealt with a similar injury in May, the Padres are unlikely to rush him back, and he's probably at least a month away from a return.
