2020 Wyndham Championship leaderboard: Jim Herman fires 63 to win last tournament before FedEx Cup Playoffs

Jim Herman dug himself out of a four-stroke deficit Sunday to win the 2020 Wyndham Championship in dramatic fashion, posting a 7-under-par 63 to edge out a loaded field in Greensboro, North Carolina. After narrowly making the weekend cut, Herman posted a field-best 61 on Saturday followed by a 63 in Round 4 that tied for the day's best score with Denny McCarthy and won the tournament with a 21-under-par 259.

"I'm ecstatic, very emotional. It's tough to put in words what exactly this means," he said on CBS. "Last summer, winning after some injuries, it was awesome just to be back on tour. And then to prove it again, goodness gracious. I was pretty down last week after Harding Park. I played terribly on the weekend. It just shows you with golf, anything is possible. Get your attitude right, make a few putts, anything can happen."

Herman was 4 under through two rounds Friday, just missing the 2-under-par cut line, but his weekend rally was powered by his putter. He gained 3.585 strokes on the field in Round 3 and 2.589 strokes on the field in Round 4.

"Made a little swing adjustment, found that, then made some putts," he said. "I think I've won now three times with three different putting strokes."

The win for Herman moved him from No. 192 in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings to No. 54, the largest-ever jump in the regular-season finale. The FedEx Cup Playoffs begin next week at the Northern Trust in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Herman had to sweat out his win in the clubhouse after posting birdies on three of his final six holes to get to 21 under. He was seen on the TV broadcast fumbling his water while awaiting Billy Horschel -- who needed a birdie on No. 18 to force a playoff -- finish his round. Horschel's birdie bid came up short, and he finished in second place at 20 under on the week. Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Doc Redman and Si Woo Kim finished tied for third at 18 under.

At 42 years old, it's Herman's third career win on the PGA Tour and first since the 2019 Barbasol Championship. He had missed the cut in 11 of the 18 events this season before surging on the weekend and overtaking a crowded leaderboard.

"You get old pretty quick out here with the young guys, they make you feel inadequate off the tee, especially long irons. It's mentally frustrating," he said. "To overcome it all and get here [with a win] for the third time is pretty amazing."

Si Woo Kim, the two-stroke leader headed into today, is really grinding. He's 2 over on the day and three back with eight to go.

Look out for Zach Johnson. He's at 16 under and on the verge of getting to 17 under (4 under on the day), making him potentially just a stroke or two off the lead of Billy Horschel.

Just when it looked like things were settling ... Billy Horschel botches his drive and botches his approach. The solo leader may not be solo leader much longer.

Billy Horschel is dialed in today and pin-seeking. Has a chance to get to 20 under and extend his lead on the field after an absolute dart on No. 8 from about 100 out.

Kim didn't pull driver on No. 6 any day this week, which makes his decision to do so today -- at just one stroke off the lead -- all the more confounding. He's perhaps pressing a bit, and it shows.

Si Woo Kim's second drive on No. 6 is just a low burner trying to keep it straight and out of the hazard. That one works. Probably should have gone with that one the first time, because now he's got a tough up and down ahead.

EXTENSIVE look for a lost ball for Si Woo Kim concludes. He's going back to the tee to drive it again. It's a goner. That's a really bad break, but an avoidable error. Curious why Kim chose to pull driver on that one with the risk of losing it and the reward not being there.

Billy Horschel is now solo leader after going birdie-EAGLE-birdie in his last three holes. He's 19 under.

Si Woo Kim in some serious hot water off the tee at No. 5. Frantic search for his ball, but it's likely lost right into the thick rough.

Things are heating up in Round 4. Billy Horschel is 3 under through five, while Si Woo Kim is even through four and in trouble off the tee on No. 5. Both are tied at 18 under now.

Jim Herman and Doc Redman at 17 under on the week, too, so a clogged leaderboard.

Si Woo Kim off to a solid start to the day with three consecutive pars. He's been striking it exceptionally well on his approach this week and that's mostly held thus far today.

Not sure I've seen this in awhile: Patrick Rodgers just chipped from the green (literally). Took a divot out of the putting surface on No. 18. Great shot, but gonna go out on a limb and guess the greenskeeper isn't happy.

This course is sandwiched in between a neighborhood, and so sometimes this happens.

Cabrera Bello with a nice bogey on No. 7 to drop him to 11 under. That was oddly important. He's in the hunt and needed that one to avoid dropping two.

Matt Jones's stellar day is over. He finishes with a final-round 5-under-par 65 to jump more than two dozen spots on the leaderboard. That's likely foreshadowing of some even bigger scores to be had out there. Should be a great Sunday.
