Jim Herman dug himself out of a four-stroke deficit Sunday to win the 2020 Wyndham Championship in dramatic fashion, posting a 7-under-par 63 to edge out a loaded field in Greensboro, North Carolina. After narrowly making the weekend cut, Herman posted a field-best 61 on Saturday followed by a 63 in Round 4 that tied for the day's best score with Denny McCarthy and won the tournament with a 21-under-par 259.
"I'm ecstatic, very emotional. It's tough to put in words what exactly this means," he said on CBS. "Last summer, winning after some injuries, it was awesome just to be back on tour. And then to prove it again, goodness gracious. I was pretty down last week after Harding Park. I played terribly on the weekend. It just shows you with golf, anything is possible. Get your attitude right, make a few putts, anything can happen."
Herman was 4 under through two rounds Friday, just missing the 2-under-par cut line, but his weekend rally was powered by his putter. He gained 3.585 strokes on the field in Round 3 and 2.589 strokes on the field in Round 4.
"Made a little swing adjustment, found that, then made some putts," he said. "I think I've won now three times with three different putting strokes."
The win for Herman moved him from No. 192 in the FedEx Cup Playoff standings to No. 54, the largest-ever jump in the regular-season finale. The FedEx Cup Playoffs begin next week at the Northern Trust in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Herman had to sweat out his win in the clubhouse after posting birdies on three of his final six holes to get to 21 under. He was seen on the TV broadcast fumbling his water while awaiting Billy Horschel -- who needed a birdie on No. 18 to force a playoff -- finish his round. Horschel's birdie bid came up short, and he finished in second place at 20 under on the week. Kevin Kisner, Webb Simpson, Doc Redman and Si Woo Kim finished tied for third at 18 under.
At 42 years old, it's Herman's third career win on the PGA Tour and first since the 2019 Barbasol Championship. He had missed the cut in 11 of the 18 events this season before surging on the weekend and overtaking a crowded leaderboard.
"You get old pretty quick out here with the young guys, they make you feel inadequate off the tee, especially long irons. It's mentally frustrating," he said. "To overcome it all and get here [with a win] for the third time is pretty amazing."
