  • Jared Jones SP | PIT

Pirates' Jared Jones: Exits with strained lat

Jones was removed from his start Wednesday versus St. Louis due to a right lat strain, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Jones managed to get through five innings of one-run ball while striking out five batters and walking two before coming out of Wednesday's contest. The 22-year-old said after the game that he could have kept pitching if necessary, but the team opted for a cautious approach in order to prevent his injury from worsening. Pittsburgh will keep an eye on Jones' lat as his next start approaches, but the initial level of concern seems relatively low.

  • Jared Shuster RP | CHW

White Sox's Jared Shuster: Starting Thursday

Shuster will start Thursday's game against the Guardians, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Shuster has appeared in 17 games for the White Sox this season, posting a 3.15 ERA and 1.34 WHIP in 34.1 innings, but Thursday will mark his first start of the year. The 25-year-old southpaw worked almost exclusively as a starter throughout his professional career before joining the White Sox in the offseason, so he should be able to pitch well into Thursday's game before Chicago turns to its bullpen.

  • Dodgers' J.P. Feyereisen: Removed from 40-man

The Dodgers sent Feyereisen outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Feyereisen was optioned to Triple-A on June 21 after posting an 8.18 ERA in 11 innings with the big-league club, and he has now officially lost his 40-man spot to Matt Gage. The 31-year-old Feyereisen hasn't found much success in the minors this season either (6.75 ERA in 18.2 innings), so a return to the big leagues in 2024 doesn't seem likely given Los Angeles' bullpen depth.

  • Cole Irvin SP | BAL

Orioles' Cole Irvin: Relegated to bullpen

Manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Irvin will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

The decision to move Irvin to the bullpen comes after he allowed five runs in 3.2 innings during his most recent start Sunday against the Rangers, giving him a 10.22 ERA over 12.1 innings across his last three starts. Hyde noted there is still a possibility that the 30-year-old southpaw returns to the rotation at some point, but he would likely need to string together several solid performances out of the bullpen before that happens.

  • German Marquez SP | COL

Rockies' German Marquez: Set for two more rehab starts

Manager Bud Black said Wednesday that Marquez (elbow) will make two more rehab starts with Double-A Hartford, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Marquez struggled heavily in his latest rehab outing at Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, allowing four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning and throwing just 33 pitches. The 29-year-old righty was originally slated for just one additional start after Friday, but his abbreviated appearance will cause the Rockies to add another game to his rehab stint, ruling him out for a return to Colorado before the All-Star break. Since restarting his assignment June 12, Marquez has allowed eight earned runs in 8.2 innings while striking out 13 batters and walking three.

  • Rangers' Jonathan Ornelas: Scratched Wednesday

Ornelas was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Padres.

The 24-year-old was set to receive his second straight start at third base Wednesday, but shortstop Corey Seager's (wrist) late addition to the lineup will push Josh Smith back to the hot corner. Ornelas went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI on Tuesday but may not stick around the roster much longer if Seager is fully recovered.

  • Corey Seager SS | TEX

Rangers' Corey Seager: Returns to lineup Wednesday

Seager (wrist) is starting at shortstop and batting second in Wednesday's game against the Padres.

Seager missed the last two games after being struck in the left wrist by a pitch Saturday against Baltimore. He was originally slated to begin Wednesday's game in the dugout, but Seager will return to the starting lineup, bumping Josh Smith to third base and Jonathan Ornelas to the bench.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Receiving Wednesday off

O'Hoppe is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics.

O'Hoppe is in the midst of a modest six-game hit streak and has gone 8-for-19 with two homers and three walks during that span, but he'll sit Wednesday after making five straight starts. Matt Thaiss will step in behind the plate to catch for righty Davis Daniel.

  • Alek Thomas CF | ARI

Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Not starting Wednesday

Thomas isn't in Arizona's lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Dodgers, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Thomas went 0-for-3 with a walk Tuesday in his first game back from a three-month stint on the injured list, and he'll take a seat on the bench Wednesday as he eases his way back into regular playing time in Arizona's outfield. Corbin Carroll will shift to center field while Thomas rests, opening up right field for Jake McCarthy.

  • Jorge Mateo 2B | BAL

Orioles' Jorge Mateo: Absent from lineup

Mateo is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners.

Mateo has gone 0-for-7 with one walk and two strikeouts over his last two games, and he will begin Wednesday's contest on the bench. Jordan Westburg and Ramon Urias will start at second and third base, respectively.
