Sal Stewart once again excelled as a hitter, although he was limited to 80 games due to a wrist injury that ended up needing surgery. The No. 32 overall pick in 2022, Stewart slashed .279/.391/.454 with eight home runs, a 14.8 percent walk rate and a 16.9 percent strikeout rate at High-A. His 27.1 percent hard-hit rate was decent for a player his age, while his 11.8 percent soft-hit rate was elite. Stewart makes contact at a strong clip (79.6 percent) and makes very good swing decisions, so it's just a question of which position he'll play and how much power he'll get to in games. Early in the year, he was such a good hitter that he was barreling a lot of balls to dead center field, which limited his home run output. Stewart is a better defender at third base than org. mate Cam Collier, so if one of them has to move to first base, Collier is the more likely option. While Stewart has seen time at second base, he probably doesn't have the mobility to play there long term. Assuming he makes a full recovery from wrist surgery, Stewart is an obvious candidate to break out as a power hitter in 2025, and he's already on track to have at least an above-average hit tool.

  • Reds' Sal Stewart: In MLB camp

    Stewart (wrist) will be part of major-league camp in spring training, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Stewart, the 32nd overall pick in the 2022 draft, batted .279/.391/.454 with eight home runs and 46 RBI over 80 games at High-A Dayton in 2024. A July wrist injury prematurely ended his season. An advanced approach at the dish is Stewart's calling card; he has nearly as many walks (138) as strikeouts (139) and owns a 15.7 career strikeout rate during his stay in the minors. Stewart split his time evenly between second and third base at Dayton and is expected to open this season at Double-A Chattanooga.

  • Reds' Sal Stewart: Out with hand/wrist injury

    High-A Dayton placed Stewart on the 7-day injured list July 17 with a hand injury, MLB.com reports. There's some speculation Stewart tore a tendon in his wrist and had surgery, but there hasn't been any firm reporting on that. Nonetheless, it seems quite possible Stewart's season is over, as he hasn't played since July 14. Stewart is capable of playing third and second base and slashed .279/.391/.454 with eight home runs, 10 steals, a 14.8 percent walk rate and a 16.9 percent strikeout rate in 80 games for the Dragons.

  • Reds' Sal Stewart: More time at second base

    Stewart is slashing .279/.381/.451 with eight home runs and a 15.5 percent strikeout rate in 66 games for High-A Dayton. The 20-year-old infielder has played more games at second base (31) than at third base (26) this season, which is notable, as he had primarily played third base in prior years. Stewart may still fit best at third base, but Cam Collier isn't capable of moving around the infield, so he has seen the bulk of the work at the hot corner for the Dragons. Stewart has always displayed an impressive command of the strike zone, and he is predictably starting to get to more of his above-average raw power in games. His .172 ISO is a career-best mark, and he is slugging .477 with six home runs over his last 30 games. A promotion to Double-A Chattanooga should be coming soon.

  • Reds' Sal Stewart: Jumps up to High-A

    The Reds promoted Stewart from Single-A Daytona to High-A Dayton on Aug. 8. The 19-year-old third baseman earned the bump on to Dayton after showing some decent pop (10 home runs and 19 doubles) and exceptional plate discipline (66 walks against 59 strikeouts) over his 387 plate appearances in the Florida State League. Since joining the High-A club, Stewart is slashing .277/.386/.319 through 12 games.
