The NHL's on-ice officials might have missed it, but the watchful eye of Brendan Shanahan and the player safety department did not.

The NHL announced Saturday evening that Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine has been suspended three games for elbowing Philadelphia's Wayne Simmonds on Friday night.

Shanhan called it a reckless elbow and added that Simmonds not returning to the game played into the decision to suspend Erskine for three games. The entire explanation is here:



Erskine will lose more than $24,000 in salary as a result of the suspension.
