Game 5 of the Devils-Flyers series on Tuesday night started with a bang as the two teams exchanged massive hits early in the first period, and New Jersey Defenseman Anton Volchenkov was in the middle of both of them.

Less than five minutes into the game Volchenkov blasted Flyers rookie forward Brayden Schenn as he skated a bit too casually behind the net.

Then, just a little under two minutes later, Volchenkov was on the receiving end of an even bigger hit from Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo. Volchenkov had to briefly leave the game but eventually returned to play the remainder of the period.

Here's a look at both hits:

There were no penalties called on either play.

The only reason Rinaldo was in the lineup for the Flyers on Tuesday was due to the one-game suspension Claude Giroux received for his hit to the head of Dainius Zubrus on Sunday night.

Needless to say, he made his presence felt very early.
