Colts' Matt Gay: Status in question for Sunday
Gay (hernia) is listed as questionable for Sunday's contest against the Texans.
Gay has been in recovery mode since undergoing surgery on a sports hernia following Indianapolis' last preseason game Aug. 22. He didn't practice at all this week, but the team still is giving him a chance to serve as its placekicker Sunday. Coach Shane Steichen told JJ Stankewitz of the Colts' official site Friday that Spencer Shrader will handle kicking duties this weekend if Gay is deemed inactive about 90 minutes before a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff.

Gay (sports hernia) is not participating in Friday's practice, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
Gay hasn't practiced in any capacity this week while recovering from sports hernia surgery, making him look like a strong candidate to sit out Sunday's regular-season opener against the Texans. Friday's official practice report will reveal Gay's injury designation for Week 1. If Gay can't go, undrafted rookie Spencer Shrader will work as Indianapolis' starting kicker versus Houston.

Gay said Wednesday that he underwent a procedure to address a sports hernia following the Colts' final preseason game Aug. 22, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports.
As a result, Gay doesn't know if he'll be available for Sunday's season opener against Houston, according to Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star. If the veteran kicker ends up sidelined this weekend, the Colts have the option of elevating practice-squad member Spencer Shrader ahead of the Week 1 contest.

Head coach Shane Steichen clarified Wednesday that Gay is dealing with a sports hernia injury rather than the groin issue that had been previously reported. While Steichen wouldn't comment on whether Gay had surgery, he did say the issue is not a long-term concern for the kicker. If Gay is unavailable for Sunday's season opener against the Texans, the Colts can promote Spencer Shrader from the practice squad to handle kicking duties Week 1.

Colts' Matt Gay: Missing field goals in preseason
Gay missed field-goal attempts from 56 and 44 yards in Saturday's preseason win over Arizona. He converted all three extra-point attempts.
Gay is just 1-for-4 in field-goal attempts in two preseason games, also missing a 36-yard attempt in the first exhibition. His only make is from 26 yards. We wouldn't be too worried about a miss longer than 50 yards, but Gay signed one of the largest contracts in the league for a kicker (four-year, $22.5 million deal) to be more reliable than he's shown in the preseason.

Colts' Matt Gay: Misses one in loss
Gay made three of four field-goal attempts in Saturday's 23-19 loss to the Texans.
Gay's lone miss came from 57 yards out and although it had the distance, hit the right upright and failed to go through. However, he was successful in the contest from 52, 38 and 35 yards, but the Colts ultimately suffered a season-ending loss. The Utah product made a career-high 33 field goals this year, including eight from 50 yards and beyond, which was also a career best. On the other hand, Gay's 80 percent conversion rate was his lowest since his rookie campaign. The 29-year-old signed a four-year contract with the Colts last offseason and will likely remain the team's kicker in what could be a formidable offense next year.

Colts' Matt Gay: Notches double figures
Gay made all three of his field-goal attempts and both of his extra-point tries in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Raiders.
Gay converted field goals from 40, 38 and 33 yards. With three games of double-digit points over his last five outings, Gay's tally of 125 on the season ranks eighth among kickers heading into Week 18.
