Steelers coach Mike Tomlin had his weekly press conference Tuesday, and in addition to confirming what we all suspected -- that Charlie Batch would be Pittsburgh's third starting quarterback in three weeks after Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich suffered shoulder and rib injuries -- we also got some clarity on the players who might be added to the roster to replace the ever-growing list of the wounded.
Jerricho Cotchery, the team's No. 4 receiver who had been elevated to No. 3 after Antonio Brown suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Giants two weeks ago, is now out indefinitely after breaking several ribs in Sunday's loss to the Ravens. Tomlin said the Steelers worked out Derrick Williams (who was in training camp) and Plaxico Burress (the team's 2000 first-round pick who left after the '04 season). The Steelers have signed Burress to a one-year deal for the veteran mininum, sources told CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora.
La Canfora added that former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer will be signed as Batch's backup. Tomlin said that Hoyer and former Eagles quarterback Mike Kafka worked out for the team.
Burress played for the Steelers from 2000-2004 where he had 261 receptions for 4,164 yards and 22 touchdowns. He played for the Giants from 2005-2008, and for the Jets last season after a stint in prison, and he's been looking for work since the Jets chose not to re-sign him in the offseason.
Hoyer, meanwhile, was signed in 2009 by New England as an undrafted free agent where he served as Tom Brady's backup until he was released prior to the 2012 season.
No word on how LaMarr Woodley took the news.
