Guardians' Zak Kent: Returns to minors
The Guardians optioned Kent to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday.
Kent has bounced back and forth between Triple-A and the majors this season. His most recent stint with the big club was a short one -- he was recalled Tuesday and got into one game, allowing two runs in one inning against Milwaukee on Wednesday, before being sent back down. Kent's movement to the minors corresponds with Cleveland activating starter Slade Cecconi (oblique) from the injured list.

Kent (elbow) has made two appearances since being reinstated from Triple-A Columbus' 7-day injured list Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on one hit and four walks while striking out three over four innings.
Kent hadn't pitched at the Triple-A level since April 14 due to a right elbow sprain before he was cleared to head out on a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League on July 25. After just one appearance in the ACL, Kent received the green light to rejoin the Triple-A pitching staff.

Guardians' Zak Kent: Re-ups with Guardians
Kent (elbow) re-signed with the Guardians on a minor-league contract July 16 and was placed on Triple-A Columbus' 7-day injured list a day later.
Kent began the season on the Guardians' 40-man roster and was optioned to Columbus coming out of spring training. He made three appearances with the Triple-A club before landing on the IL on April 19 with a right elbow strain. Kent was never activated before the Guardians designated him for assignment in late June and then ultimately released him, but he's now back with the organization, though he's no longer a member of the 40-man roster. He's still working his way back from the elbow injury, but Kent will take a meaningful step forward Thursday, as he's been cleared to report to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League to begin a rehab assignment.

Guardians' Zak Kent: Dealt to Cleveland
The Guardians acquired Kent from the Rangers on Thursday in exchange for international bonus pool money and optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.
Kent was one of two pitchers Cleveland traded for in advance of Opening Day, with Peter Strzelecki also coming aboard in a deal with Arizona. Though both new arrivals will claim spots on the 40-man roster, neither will join the team for Thursday's season opener in Oakland and will instead be ticketed for Columbus. The 26-year-old Kent, who has yet to make his MLB debut, posted a 3.97 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 34:10 K:BB in 10 starts at Triple-A Round Rock in 2023, but it's unclear whether or not the Guardians intend to keep him on a starter's development track or move him to the bullpen.

Kent was never a real candidate to break camp with the team, anyway, but he didn't help himself in posting a 12.27 ERA in three Cactus League appearances. The 26-year-old will open 2024 in Round Rock's rotation and hope to debut at some point this year with the Rangers.

The 6-foot-3 righty struck out three in three scoreless innings during his first start of the year for the Express on April 4 but has not pitched since. Kent boasts an excellent fastball/slider combination, but he is still working on developing starter-caliber command and secondaries beyond his breaking ball. He has six career starts at Triple-A under his belt and is on the 40-man roster, so we could see Kent pitching in the majors in some capacity later this season.

Kent has a hammer curveball that plays as a plus pitch when he is locating his low-to-mid-90s fastball. Considering he will turn 25 in February and has made just five starts at Triple-A, the clock is ticking on Kent to make it as a starting pitcher. However, he could have a nice fall-back plan as a setup man if he is moved to relief.

Kent was on the shelf for about two and a half weeks with the undisclosed injury. Since the Rangers didn't send him to a lower-level affiliate for a rehab assignment prior to activating him, Kent has been getting stretched out on the fly during his starts with Frisco. He should need only one or two more outings before he's free of any major pitch-count restrictions in his starts.
