  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Fills in at third base Tuesday

Tawa came off the bench in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the White Sox and went 0-for-3 with a run scored. Ildemaro Vargas (foot) was removed. Tawa went 0-for-3 with a run scored in a 4-1 win over the White Sox. Ildemaro Vargas drew the start at third base in place of Eugenio Suarez (hand), but Tawa was needed off the bench for the second straight game to replace an injured teammate. After filling in for Josh Naylor (shoulder) at first base in Monday's 10-0 win, Tawa entered Tuesday as a replacement for Ildemaro Vargas, who fractured his right foot. Vargas is likely to go on the injured list, while Suarez is expected to miss multiple days as he continues to deal with significant hand swelling, per Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com. In the interim, Tawa could be in line for a few starts at third base, but Arizona is also expected to recall infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno to provide another option at the position.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Enters for injured teammate

Tawa entered Monday's game at first base in the fourth inning and went 0-for-2. He replaced Josh Naylor (shoulder), who injured his right shoulder following an awkward swing in the second inning. As the Diamondbacks were facing a right-hander, Pavin Smith was already in the game as the designated hitter, so Arizona manager Torey Lovullo went with Tawa. The manager told Casey Drottar of MLB.com that Naylor plans to return to the field Tuesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Doubles, scores in win

Tawa went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Wednesday's 2-1 win over Atlanta. Tawa doubled in the ninth inning and scored Arizona's second run on a Ketel Marte single. It was an important run the team needed, as closer Justin Martinez allowed a run in the bottom of the frame. Since Marte returned from the injured list in early May, forcing Tawa into a part-time role as a fill-in outfielder against left-handers, the rookie has handled the transition well. He's batting .271 (13-for-48) with four extra-base hits, four RBI, four steals and five runs over 19 games in the part-time role.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Steals base in win

Tawa started in center field and went 0-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base in Monday's 5-0 win over the Pirates. Tawa filled his usual role, replacing Alek Thomas whenever the Diamondbacks face a left-hander. He knocked in Arizona's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and then stole his sixth base of the season in the eighth inning. He's stolen four bases over 15 contests since second baseman Ketel Marte returned from an injury and adjusted Tawa's role to a degree. Tawa is batting .227/.297/.423 with five home runs, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored in 34 contests.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Logs fifth steal

Tawa went 1-for-2 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Dodgers. Tawa didn't start Tuesday, instead coming off the bench to replace Alek Thomas in the eighth inning. As expected, playing time has gotten sparse for Tawa, who is now functioning as a short-side platoon option in center field. He's batting .247 five home runs, five steals, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored across 98 plate appearances this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Starts in center against lefty

Tawa started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 8-0 win over Colorado. Tawa replaced Alek Thomas in center field against Rockies left-hander Carson Palmquist. He also replaced Thomas against San Francisco southpaw Robbie Ray earlier in the week. Tawa was dislodged from an infield utility role when the Diamondbacks called up Jordan Lawlar, but he'll fill the short side of a platoon in center. Tawa carries a .228 average (18-for-79), but he's slugged five home runs and three doubles (.228 ISO) through 27 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Three hits in loss

Tawa went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 10-6 loss to the Giants. The utility player got a start in center field Tuesday, but Tawa's playing time is set to drop with Jordan Lawlar coming up from Triple-A Reno to fill a utility role in the infield. Tawa's also got some versatility, but he'll have fewer opportunities to make an impact. He's batting .224 over 26 games, though he has added a .762 OPS, five home runs, 11 RBI, 11 runs scored and four stolen bases across 89 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: MLB window may close

Tawa could be a candidate to return to the minors with the Diamondbacks expected to promote top prospect Jordan Lawlar from Triple-A Reno on Monday, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. Lawlar has seen action at second base, shortstop and third base at Reno this season, but the Diamondbacks already have reliable incumbents on hand at those respective positions in Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo and Eugenio Suarez. Piecoro's report suggests that the Diamondbacks envision Lawler filling a utility role and playing three to four times per week, which would render Tawa a redundant piece on the roster. Tawa remained with the big club after Marte was reinstated from the injured list May 2 but has appeared in six of the Diamondbacks' ensuing 10 games while going 3-for-14 with one walk, two steals, one RBI and one run.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Two steals in Saturday's win

Tawa went 1-for-2 with a walk and two stolen bases in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Dodgers. Tawa got the start in left field Saturday -- it was his first major-league start anywhere other than second base. He has often provided cover for Ketel Marte at the keystone as his veteran teammate gets regular rest to avoid aggravating a hamstring issue. Tawa is up to four steals on the year, and he's added five home runs, 11 RBI, 11 runs scored, two doubles and a .203 batting average over 82 plate appearances. He's gone 4-for-14 (.286) over six games in May.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Adds insurance

Tawa went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Mets. Tawa gave the Diamondbacks a two-run cushion in the top of the ninth inning with his fifth home run. After swatting 32 home runs in two minor-league stops in 2024, Tawa has a combined eight through 25 games for Triple-A Reno and Arizona this season. It should be noted that Ketel Marte (hamstring) is with the D-backs on their road trip and could be activated for the weekend series in Philadelphia. Marte's return means fewer opportunities for Tawa and Garrett Hampson.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Bats leadoff Wednesday

Tawa batted leadoff and went 0-for-5 in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Mets. Tawa typically occupies the ninth spot in the order against pitchers of either hand. Against lefties, Corbin Carroll is dropped to second and Geraldo Perdomo leads off, but Perdomo was getting a rest day Wednesday, prompting Tawa's promotion. Once Ketel Marte (hamstring) returns from the 10-day injured list, he'll be the default leadoff batter against southpaws. Tawa is batting .182 (10-for-55) with a .728 OPS (six extra-base hits) over 18 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Cracks first long ball of 2025

Tawa went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-2 win over the Marlins. Tawa slugged his first MLB home run in the seventh inning, when he took Tyler Phillips deep to left-center field for a 414-foot blast. The rookie has appeared in six games (five starts) this season and has gone 4-for-18 with one walk, four runs scored, one home run and five RBI. He looks set to see most of the starts at second base while Ketel Marte (hamstring) is on the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Sitting again Saturday

Tawa is not in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup against the Brewers on Saturday. For the second game in a row, Tawa will not be in Arizona's starting nine as Garrett Hampson gets the start at the keystone and bats ninth. Tawa has appeared in four games this season and has gone 2-for-11 with one walk, one run scored and three RBI.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Drives in two

Tawa went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Orioles. Tawa capped the Diamondbacks' five-run fifth inning with a two-run single that plated Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy. Tawa started at second base for the third time in five games since Ketel Marte (hamstring) was added to the 10-day injured list. He and Garrett Hampson have alternated starts. With Marte expected to miss a "series of weeks," per manager Torey Lovullo, Tawa is in position to see ample opportunities through the end of the month.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Makes second start

Tawa started at second base and went 0-for-3 in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Orioles. Tawa made his second start in the three games since being called up from Triple-A Reno in the wake of Ketel Marte's hamstring injury. He's gone hitless over six at-bats since singling in his first MLB plate appearance. Tawa was instrumental in ending Zac Gallen's night by not receiving the ball cleanly on a potential inning-ending double play, which allowed a run to score and led to Ryan Mountcastle's two-run single that led to Gallen getting the hook.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Likely to be primary fill-in at 2B

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo suggested that Tawa will get the majority of playing time at second base while Ketel Marte (hamstring) is on the injured list, Paige Leckie of MLB.com reports. Tawa, who was called up from Triple-A Reno on Saturday, made his MLB debut later that day in a 4-3 loss to the Nationals. He started at the keystone and went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Though Garrett Hampson came off the bench Friday to fill in for Marte when he got hurt, Lovullo said that he'll likely keep Hampson in a utility role and use him only occasionally at second base while Marte is on the shelf.

  • Diamondbacks' Tim Tawa: Starting at keystone in MLB debut

Tawa is starting at second base and batting ninth in Saturday's game against Washington. Tawa was called up from Triple-A Reno prior to Saturday's contest, and he'll get a chance to make an impression right away by starting at the keystone in what will be his MLB debut. Tawa's opportunity comes as a result of Ketel Marte (hamstring) landing on the injured list Saturday. In six games at Reno prior to his call-up, Tawa slashed .391/.462/.957 with three home runs, 13 RBI, eight runs and two stolen bases.
