Player Outlook
The lefty-hitting Wilyer Abreu was traded to Boston at the 2022 trade deadline in the deal that sent Christian Vazquez to Houston. He doesn't run as much as he used to, attempting just 13 steals in 114 games across Triple-A and the majors, but Abreu has a cannon of an arm and logged an impressive 49.1 HardHit% rate in 53 batted-ball events, per Statcast. He made solid swing decisions in his brief cup of coffee, but Abreu's Contact% was a hair below 70 percent, so he will likely be better in OBP leagues than AVG leagues. Abreu's defensive versatility and patient approach make him more valuable to Boston than to fantasy managers, but he's a very strong outfield streamer when home games and/or games against right-handed pitchers are on the docket. Abreu figured to get a chance on the strong side of an outfield platoon with Rob Refsnyder to start the year, but the acquisition of Tyler O'Neill notably diminishes his 2024 outlook.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting vs. southpaw

Abreu is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against Cincinnati. After being activated from the injured list Saturday, Abreu went back to his regular role in right field, going 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in a 4-3 win. Against Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo, Abreu will begin Sunday's contest in the dugout while the righty-hitting Tyler O'Neill starts in right field and bats third.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Doubles, scores in return

Abreu started in right field and went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Saturday's 4-3 win over Cincinnati. Abreu, who was activated off the 10-day injured list Saturday and reclaimed his regular role as the club's primary right fielder, and Connor Wong hit back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning, producing Boston's second run and closing the Reds' lead to 3-2. The lefty swinging Abreu was later pinch hit for by Rob Refsnyder in the eighth inning against lefty Justin Wilson. Abreu doesn't get a chance to face a lot of lefties; he has just 28 plate appearances against southpaws and maintains a .450 OPS off them.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Activated from IL, back in lineup

The Red Sox reinstated Abreu (ankle) from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Abreu will start in right field and bat second against the Reds on Saturday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Abreu landed on the injured list June 4 after twisting his right ankle in the dugout against the Tigers on June 2. He began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday and went 3-for-12 with two solo home runs across his three outings. Prior to his injury, Abreu was slashing .272/.344/.485 with six home runs and 22 RBI while sporting an .829 OPS. To make room for Abreu, utility man Bobby Dalbec was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Likely to be activated Saturday

Abreu (ankle) is likely to be activated from the 10-day injured list Saturday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Abreu is with the Red Sox in Cincinnati but hasn't been activated just yet, probably because the Reds are starting a left-hander Friday in Andrew Abbott. Expect Abreu to be activated and in Saturday's lineup versus righty Frankie Montas. He's been sidelined since early June with a right ankle sprain.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Activation possible this weekend

Abreu (ankle) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during this weekend's series against the Reds, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. He's expected to serve as Worcester's DH on Thursday and should rejoin the Red Sox on Friday or Saturday.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Hitless in first rehab game

Abreu (ankle) served as Triple-A Worcester's designated hitter and went 0-for-4 with a walk in his first rehab game Tuesday. The Red Sox plan to have him play again for Worcester on Wednesday with the hope that he'll be ready to return from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday's series against the Reds in Cincinnati, per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe. Abreu has been on the shelf since June 4 with a right ankle sprain.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Starting rehab assignment

Abreu (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram and Gazette reports. Abreu is slated to bat second and serve as the designated hitter for the WooSox. He's been sidelined for just over two weeks with a right ankle sprain, so Abreu shouldn't need many rehab at-bats before rejoining the Red Sox' active roster.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Back 'sooner rather than later'

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that he expects Abreu (ankle) to return from the 10-day injured list "sooner rather than later," Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Cora said that Abreu still feels some minor discomfort with his right ankle when running in a straight line, but the outfielder is doing much better. He will need a rehab assignment, so Abreu won't be ready for activation when first eligible Thursday. However, the Red Sox likely won't have to wait too much longer to get Abreu back.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sent to 10-day IL

The Red Sox placed Abreu on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a right ankle sprain, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, Abreu is hoping to return in the minimum 10 days after he sprained his ankle in the Red Sox's dugout during Sunday's game against the Tigers. Bobby Dalbec drew the start in Abreu's usual spot in right field Tuesday, but one of Rob Refsnyder and Tyler O'Neill (knee) should serve as the primary option at the position once O'Neill returns from the IL later this week.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: IL stint imminent

Manager Alex Cora said Tuesday that Abreu (ankle) will be placed on the injured list, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Abreu twisted his right ankle in the dugout during Sunday's game and the injury seems to be severe enough to warrant a significant absence, although exactly how long Abreu will be out remains to be seen. Tyler O'Neill (knee) could return Wednesday to take Abreu's place on the roster and in the outfield.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting out versus lefty

Abreu is out of the lineup for Monday's game in Baltimore. The Orioles have southpaw Cole Irvin on the mound Monday, so the left-handed hitting Abreu will take a seat. Rob Refsnyder will be in right field for the Red Sox and also occupy the second spot in the batting order.

The 24-year-old outfielder continues to cement his place in the starting lineup, as he's slashing .316/.395/.519 with two homers, 12 RBI, 14 runs and five thefts on the campaign. Abreu began the campaign as Boston's fourth outfielder, but has since emerged as the team's everyday right fielder and cleanup hitter.

Abreu went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 4-0 win over San Francisco. Abreu is swinging a productive bat; this was his fifth multi-hit game over the last 10 contests, during which he's 18-for-41 with nine extra-base hits, 10 RBI and eight runs scored. Much of that production has come as the cleanup batter, a spot that had been filled by Triston Casas prior to the oblique injury that landed him on the 60-day injured list.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting out Friday

Abreu is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Cubs. Southpaw Shota Imanaga is toeing the rubber for the Cubs, so the left-handed hitting Abreu is receiving a day off. Tyler O'Neill will cover right field and Rob Refsnyder will get a start in left for the Red Sox.

Abreu entered the series with PIttsburgh hitting just .184 but reached base 10 times, going 7-for-12 with three walks, a homer, two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored during the weekend set to raise his average to .280 with a .390 on-base percentage.

  • Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Steals base in win

Abreu started in right field and went 0-for-2 with a walk and stolen base in Wednesday's 2-0 win over Cleveland. Abreu swiped a bag for the third consecutive game and fourth consecutive start; he ranks second on the team with four stolen bases. He has a history of high-volume attempted steals in the minors, so this flurry is not out of character. Red Sox manager Alex Cora indicated earlier in the week that Abreu will be in the lineup against right-handers for the time being, which puts him on the fantasy radar. The outfielder has reached base safely over the last six appearances (five starts), adding five runs scored to his four steals during that stretch.
