The Orioles optioned McDermott to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. McDermott struggled in a spot start Wednesday versus the Brewers, yielding three runs on four hits and five walks over 4.2 frames. With McDermott now in the minors, the Orioles will have an opening in their rotation Sunday in Boston.... See More ... See Less

Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Struggles with control in loss
McDermott (0-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Brewers after allowing three runs on four hits and five walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out two. Piggybacking off opener Keegan Akin, McDermott struggled with his control while delivering just 37 of his 75 pitches for strikes. The 26-year-old right-hander generated a meager three swinging strikes, and he's now given up three home runs in his first 7.2 innings of the season after conceding two homers Tuesday. McDermott owns an uninspiring 8.22 ERA, 2.09 WHIP and 7:8 K:BB over his two major-league outings this season.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Chayce McDermott: In line to start Tuesday's game
McDermott was added to the Orioles' taxi squad Monday and is expected to start Tuesday's game in Milwaukee, Danielle Allentuck of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. McDermott showed flashes in a spot start last week against the Twins, striking out five while yielding four runs over three innings. He missed the first month of the season with a lat injury and hasn't thrown more than 65 pitches in any outing, so McDermott is unlikely to go deep into Tuesday's start unless he's efficient.... Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Sent back down after spot start
The Orioles optioned McDermott to Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday. McDermott was up as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Twins, starting the second game and allowing four runs over three innings. The right-hander will rejoin the rotation at Norfolk and wait for another opportunity with the big club.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Activated and optioned
The Orioles reinstated McDermott (lat) from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Baltimore has an opening in its rotation during the upcoming week after demoting Charlie Morton to the bullpen, but McDermott apparently isn't being viewed as a candidate to fill the void while he builds back up from the right lat strain that kept him out for all of spring training and the first month of the regular season. McDermott kicked off his rehab assignment with Double-A Chesapeake this past Sunday before moving up to Norfolk for his second start Saturday, when he struck out three over four scoreless innings. The 26-year-old righty tossed 57 pitches in that outing, but once he gets stretched out into the 75-to-90-pitch range at Triple-A, he could be a more realistic option for the big-league rotation.... Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Rehab assignment on tap
McDermott (lat) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Chesapeake on Sunday, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports. McDermott has been on the injured list all season due to a right lat strain that he suffered in February. He's been facing hitters at the team's complex in Florida for the past several days and has now been given the green light to test his lat in a competitive setting. Because he missed nearly all of spring camp, he will likely require several starts in the minors before being activated off the IL.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Placed on 15-day IL
The Orioles placed McDermott on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right lat strain, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. McDermott resumed mound work in mid-March but still needs time to build back up. Once healthy, he will likely be sent to Triple-A Norfolk.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Not yet cleared for activities
McDermott (lat) said Tuesday that he feels "really good," but he's not sure when he'll be cleared to begin a throwing progression, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. McDermott has been limited to strengthening exercises since being diagnosed with a mild right lat/teres strain earlier this month. The injury has likely eliminated any chance he had to make the Orioles' Opening Day roster, but he could have a shot to be ready to join the rotation at Triple-A Norfolk at the start of the season.... Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Goes four frames in MLB debut
McDermott allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against Miami on Wednesday. McDermott was called up Wednesday to make his big-league debut after posting a 3.96 ERA and 1.43 WHIP over 91.0 innings in Triple-A. The right-hander got through three scoreless frames against the Marlins but struggled in the fourth, giving up three runs on four hits, including a Josh Bell homer. That proved to be his final frame, as Baltimore brought in a reliever to begin the fifth. Though he didn't pitch particularly well, there's a good chance McDermott will get another turn in the rotation with Baltimore hosting a doubleheader against Toronto in five days.... See More ... Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Contract selected ahead of debut
The Orioles selected McDermott's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. McDermott is set to make his major-league debut with a start Wednesday in Miami. The right-hander has collected a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk, covering 19 starts and one relief appearance. The fifth spot in the Orioles' rotation is currently open, and McDermott is being given a chance to show he can fill it.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Likely to make MLB debut Wednesday
McDermott is likely to be called up from Triple-A Norfolk make his major-league debut Wednesday in Miami, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. McDermott was added to the taxi squad Tuesday, and the Orioles have since announced that Corbin Burnes will start Thursday, filling one of the two open spots in the rotation for the series in Miami. The Orioles still have an opening for Wednesday, and McDermott is fully expected to fill the void. The 25-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Joins taxi squad, could get call-up
The Orioles added McDermott to their taxi squad Tuesday, signaling that he could soon be formally called up from Triple-A Norfolk, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Baltimore currently has a vacancy in its rotation after sending Cade Povich down to Norfolk prior to the All-Star break, and McDermott would appear to be in line to fill the void Wednesday in Miami for what would be his major-league debut. The right-hander has collected a 3.96 ERA and 129:54 K:BB over 91 innings this season with Norfolk.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Better control since May
McDermott has a 3.79 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 54.2 innings over his last 10 starts for Triple-A Norfolk. McDermott walked 23 batters in 21.1 innings over his first six starts of the season, but he's been much more efficient since the calendar turned to May. There are some question marks behind Corbin Burnes and Grayson Rodriguez in Baltimore's rotation, and if more reinforcements are needed from Triple-A at some point this summer, McDermott may finally get his shot.... Orioles' Chayce McDermott: On Triple-A IL
McDermott was placed on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Norfolk on Sept. 16 with a back strain, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. The International League's championship is next week, so this may mean the end of McDermott's minor-league season. The 25-year-old righty logged a 2.49 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 31.2 percent strikeout rate and an 11.7 percent walk rate in 50.2 innings across 10 appearances for the Tides after tossing 68.1 innings at Double-A earlier in the year. McDermott hasn't had a walk rate below 11 percent in the upper levels of the minors, which could result in him eventually ending up in the bullpen. However, he's got a solid three-pitch mix in his 94-mph fastball (touches 96 mph), high-spin curveball and low-to-mid-80s slider, so if he can cut the walks slightly, he could get a look in the big-league rotation sometime next year.... Orioles' Chayce McDermott: Bumped up to Triple-A
The Orioles promoted McDermott from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports. Coming out of the upcoming All-Star break, McDermott will be debuting with the Orioles' top affiliate after an impressive 14-start run at Double-A to begin the 2023 campaign. Over 68.1 innings with Bowie, McDermott submitted a 3.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 88:44 K:BB.... See More ... See Less
