Player Outlook
Cal Quantrill's run of success came to a screeching halt last season, as he made a pair of trips to the injured list with shoulder trouble and struggled to an ERA north of 6.00 in his final 12 starts. While it was obvious that the right-hander had been pitching over his skis since coming over from San Diego, it was still somewhat surprising to see his performance crater like it did. The injury almost certainly played a part, but regardless the Guardians designated Quantrill for assignment after the season, later sending him to the Rockies via trade. Quantrill has always been subject to the whims of variance given his low strikeout rate (career 17.7 K%), and adding Coors Field to the mix makes him a highly combustible element. Colorado is hoping he can provide stability in the middle of the rotation, but it will be tough in that division.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Logs quality start

Quantrill did not factor into the decision in a win over the Nationals on Saturday, allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings while striking out five. Most of the damage against Quantrill came in the third when CJ Abrams tagged him for a leadoff double to open the inning before then advancing to third on a balk. The right-hander would go on to surrender two runs in the frame before later giving up a leadoff homer to Abrams in the fifth, though the former was still able to get through six innings for the seventh time in his last 10 starts. Quantrill has given up three or fewer runs in four consecutive outings, though he's also allowed seven hits in each of his last two.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Defeated by Dodgers on Monday

Quantrill (6-5) took the loss against the Dodgers on Monday, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three batters over five innings. Quantrill came into the contest having tossed back-to-back scoreless starts, but he wasn't able to maintain that level of sharpness Monday. The right-hander fell behind 3-0 through two frames, and though he held Los Angeles scoreless for the remainder of his outing, he didn't get the run support necessary to be taken off the hook for the loss. Quantrill has had a few poor appearances this season but has generally been a positive addition to the Rockies' rotation, recording a 3.43 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 59:33 K:BB through 84 innings.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Another scoreless start

Quantrill (6-4) picked up the win Tuesday against Minnesota, allowing three hits and one walk with five strikeouts across six scoreless innings. Quantrill has gone 11 straight innings without allowing a run and issued fewer than two walks for the first time in four starts. The 29-year-old didn't yield an extra-base hit Tuesday and didn't let a runner get past second base, qualifying for his sixth quality start in his last eight outings. While his strikeout stuff has been hit-or-miss, Quantrill owns a 6-1 record and a 1.91 ERA since the start of May. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Dodgers at Coors Field on Monday. Quantrill allowed four runs in 4.1 innings when he faced the Dodgers in Los Angeles on June 1.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Falls to Dodgers

Quantrill (4-4) allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one over 4.1 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Dodgers. Quantrill had logged five straight quality starts, but this was always going to be a tough matchup, even away from Coors Field. The Dodgers got to him for two runs in the second inning and never looked back. Quantrill has still put together a respectable first season with the Rockies, posting a 3.84 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 50:25 K:BB over 68 innings across 12 starts. His 3.3 BB/9 is still a holdover concern from last year, and he'll never be one to strike out a lot of batters, but he's generally been reliable. Quantrill's next start is projected to be at St. Louis.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Wins with quality start

Quantrill (4-3) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings Sunday, striking out five and earning a win over the Phillies. Quantrill held the Phillies off the scoreboard through three frames before giving up a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. He forced 18 whiffs, blowing by his previous season high of 12. Quantrill produced his fifth straight quality start, going 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA during that span. Prior to this hot streak, he was 0-3 with a 5.34 ERA to begin the year. Quantrill now owns a 3.53 ERA and a 49:23 K:BB through 63.2 innings. He's now in line for a tough road matchup with the Dodgers next weekend.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Bullpen spoils win Tuesday

Quantrill did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Athletics, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out eight over six innings. Quantrill surrendered a third-inning home run to J.D. Davis and later allowed the A's to scratch across an additional run in the sixth after JJ Bleday tripled before scoring on a wild pitch. Quantrill was in line for a fourth consecutive win after exiting the contest but that was eventually spoiled after the bullpen coughed up three runs between the seventh and eighth innings. The 29-year-old nearly matched his season-high in strikeouts. His strikeout rate this season is up to 18.6 percent, which is a significant improvement from 13.1 last year. Quantrill now owns a 3.59 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 44:21 K:BB in 57.2 innings and faces a tough test ahead of him against the Phillies over the weekend.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Picks up win No. 3

Quantrill (3-3) earned the win over the Padres on Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings. Quantrill has now won three straight decisions while allowing just two runs over his last 19.2 innings pitched. He blanked the Padres through six frames and was pulled after surrendering a leadoff walk to Jurickson Profar in the seventh, who would end up scoring in the inning. Dating back to April 15, Quantrill has allowed one or fewer runs in five of his six starts and is now down to a 3.66 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 36:20 K:BB in 51.2 innings. He'll look to keep the momentum going, as he tentatively lines up for a road start against the Athletics next week.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Blanks Bucs for first win

Quantrill (1-3) picked up the win Friday, scattering three hits over 7.2 scoreless innings in a 3-2 victory over the Pirates. He struck out nine without walking a batter. For the first time all season, the Rockies never trailed at any point in the game, and that was largely thanks to Quantrill. The right-hander generated 34 called or swinging strikes over his 99 pitches as he set a new season high in strikeouts -- in fact, the nine Ks were his highest single-game total since 2021, when he fanned 10 Tigers while with Cleveland. The quality start was Quantrill's fourth of the year in seven trips to the mound, but he got tagged for 15 runs over 14 frames in the other three. He'll take a 4.31 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB through 39.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Giants.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Tagged for six runs

Quantrill (0-3) was charged with the loss Saturday against the Astros after he surrendered six runs on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two. Quantrill generated just six swinging strikes on 95 total pitches and served up multiple home runs in a start for the third time this year. He also walked multiple batters for the fourth time through six outings, and the poor performance ended a run of three straight quality starts. The 29-year-old righty has limited fantasy appeal with a 5.34 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 17:14 K:BB across 32 innings this season.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Survives six scoreless Sunday

Quantrill pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out four batters in Colorado's 2-1 extra-inning win in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader with the Mariners. He did not factor into the decision. Quantrill didn't have his best command Sunday, walking a season-high five batters while throwing 62 of his 108 total pitches for strikes. In the end though, he was able to notch his first scoreless outing of the year while extending his quality start streak to three outings in a row. After a slow start to the 2024 campaign, Quantrill now owns a 4.33 ERA and 1.48 WHIP with 15 strikeouts over 27 innings in five starts this season. The 29-year-old's next projected start is expected to be Saturday at home versus the Astros.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Gets no support against PHI

Quantrill didn't factor into the decision Monday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks with one strikeout in six innings against the Phillies. Quantrill notched his second straight quality start and yielded fewer than three runs for the first time in 2023. Despite making three of his first four starts away from Coors Field, Quantrill owns a 5.57 ERA and an 11:7 K:BB through 21.0 innings. After their series in Philadelphia, the Rockies will play their next nine games at home, with Quantrill tentatively lined up to face the Mariners on Sunday before seeing either the Padres or Astros in his following start.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Goes six innings in loss

Quantrill (0-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks in six innings. He struck out six. Quantrill struck out a season-high six batters in his first quality start of the year, but he fell victim to the long ball, allowing home runs to Corbin Carroll and Randal Grichuk. Both of those home runs came in the first two innings, as Quantrill was able to settle in and throw four shutout frames afterwards. It's been a rough go early for the 29-year-old and he'll take a 7.20 ERA and 1.73 WHIP into his next start on the road against Philadelphia.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Struggles in second start

Quantrill allowed four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three batters over four innings in a no-decision against the Cubs on Wednesday. Quantrill had control issues in the outing, though most of his struggles came in the second inning, when he walked three batters and gave up all four of the runs against him. He at least managed to retire five of the final six batters he faced, but he was pulled after the fourth frame having thrown 90 pitches. Quantrill's tenure in Colorado has not gotten off to a good beginning, as he's given up nine earned runs across his first nine innings and has posted a 4:5 K:BB along with a 2.00 WHIP.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Tagged for five runs

Quantrill (0-1) struck out one and yielded five runs on nine hits and one walk over five-plus innings in Friday's 7-3 loss to Arizona. Quantrill served up back-to-back home runs to Lourdes Gurriel and Christian Walker in the first inning. Through five frames Quantrill had allowed just three runs, but he was charged with two more after his exit in the sixth when the Rockies bullpen allowed two inherited runners to cross the plate. The 29-year-old righty posted a disappointing 5.24 ERA across 99.2 innings in 2023, and his outlook doesn't seem much better in 2024. Quantrill is currently lined up for a road matchup with the Cubs next week.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Rockies debut set

Quantrill will start the second game of the regular season against the Diamondbacks, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. Quantrill was hit hard in his final outing of spring training, but he's still set to follow Kyle Freeland in the rotation as the Rockies' second starter. Positively, he's worked 4.2 innings in each of his last two starts, so he should be able to handle a full workload to begin the campaign.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Looks good in ramp-up

Quantrill allowed four hits and one walk while striking out three across 4.2 scoreless innings in Sunday's Cactus League game against the Giants. Quantrill made his longest appearance of the spring and tallied his first strikeout of the exhibition season. Despite the lack of swing and miss, he's been effective, allowing only three earned runs across 10.2 frames. Quantrill will be relied upon as a key part of the Rockies' rotation, though he's likely to find consistent success hard to come by given his contact-heavy approach at Coors Field.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Efficient first spring appearance

Quantrill completed two innings while allowing two hits and one run with no strikeouts or walks in his Cactus League debut with the Rockies on Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Quantrill will serve a key role in the Rockies' rotation during the regular season after being acquired by the team this offseason. He had a strong debut with the club, focusing on pumping his splitter and sinker into the strike zone. His ability to use those pitches consistently will be a key to his success, as he'll want to keep the ball on the ground while pitching in one of the more hitter-friendly home parks in the league.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Avoids arbitration with Rockies

The Rockies and Quantrill avoided arbitration Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year, $6.55 million contract, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Colorado acquired Quantrill from Cleveland back in November and it has now locked him into a contract for the 2024 campaign. The right-hander posted a disappointing 5.24 ERA and 58:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings in 2023 but held a career 3.54 ERA heading into the season. Quantrill will open 2024 in the Rockies' rotation but won't be a desirable fantasy option.

  • Rockies' Cal Quantrill: Acquired by Rockies via trade

The Rockies acquired Quantrill from the Guardians in exchange for Kody Huff on Friday. Quantrill had been designated for assignment by Cleveland earlier in the week but quickly landed in another organization, and he should slide right into Colorado's rotation. The 28-year-old right-hander posted a 5.24 ERA and 58:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings in 2023 but boasted a career 3.54 ERA coming into last season. Quantrill is a sensible addition by the Rockies, but landing in Colorado virtually eliminates whatever fantasy appeal he might have had in 2024.

  • Guardians' Cal Quantrill: Pushed off 40-man roster

Quantrill was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Tuesday. Qunatrill was a reliable member of Cleveland's starting rotation between 2021-22 before stumbling to a 5.24 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 58:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings in 2023. The 28-year-old right-hander can elect free agency if he passes through waivers unclaimed and would actually probably do quite well for himself in this pitching-thin market.
