Player Outlook
A marriage made in baseball heaven, Matt Olson has done nothing but rake since Atlanta acquired him from Oakland in March of 2022. He turned it up to an even greater level in 2023, his second year with the organization, pacing all major-league hitters in home runs (54) and RBI (139) while registering the fourth-highest OPS in the bigs at .993. He finished in the 99th percentile in both average exit velocity and hard-hit rate and ranked in the 97th percentile in xSLG, all en route to a fourth-place finish for NL MVP. Olson enters his age-30 season firing on all cylinders and surrounded by one of the best supporting casts you can find. He again has a chance to lead the majors in homers and should feast on RBI opportunities as the locked-in cleanup man for the reigning National League East champions. With first base lacking some of the depth it had a decade ago, it's probably worth reaching for Olson in the opening rounds of drafts this spring.

Olson went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a second run scored in Friday's 8-1 win over the Yankees. Olson's bat has come alive in June, and through 74 plate appearances on the month he's slashing .309/.365/.574 with four of his 12 long balls on the year and 10 of his 40 RBI.

The first baseman extended his hitting streak to nine contests, a stretch during which he is batting .361 (13-for-26) with two home runs and five RBI. Olson's 11 homers are second-most on Atlanta but are well off the pace of the 54 long balls he belted last season.

Olson went 3-for-5 with a home run, double, three RBI and a run scored Sunday against the Pirates. Olson had previously added a two-run double and finished the game just a triple short of the cycle. Olson went 3-for-8 with a home run, a walk and two total RBI across both games of Monday's doubleheader split with San Diego. Olson did most of his damage in Game 1, swatting a solo homer and adding another RBI on a single. The first baseman has gotten off to a slow start this season with a .230/.332/.410 slash line and just six homers through 44 games after going deep a career-high 54 times last year. Olson has been perking up with the bat of late, though, hitting .393 (11-for-28) with two home runs and seven RBI over his past eight contests.

  • Braves' Matt Olson: Finally snaps slump

Olson went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's win over the Mets. Olson hit Atlanta's third and final homer during the third inning and it proved to be the game-winning blast. It was his first long ball since April 7, snapping an uncharacteristic 26-game skid. During that extended drought, he posted a .508 OPS with 30 strikeouts. On the year, Olson is slashing .202/.311/.372 with 13 extra-base hits and 18 RBI through 35 contests.

  • Braves' Matt Olson: Few concerns about slump

Olson hasn't hit a home run in 18 straight games, slashing .167/.291/.242 over that stretch with three doubles, one triple and seven RBI, but he remains among the league leaders in key hitting metrics, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Despite the first baseman's lack of production in April, Olson sits in the 97th percentile in hard-hit rate and average exit velocity on the season, numbers comparable to what he posted during his career-best 2023 campaign. It seems only a matter of time before the 30-year-old gets dialed in and begins racking up hits and homers.

Olson set an Atlanta franchise record with 139 RBI in 2023 while adding a career-high 54 homers, and the 29-year-old is a safe bet to reach triple-digit RBI for the fourth straight season while batting in the heart of one of the most potent lineups in MLB.

For the year, the first baseman has a .281/.387/.605 slash line with 136 RBI, 126 runs scored and one stolen base through 159 contests. If he remains in the lineup each day for the three-game series versus the Nationals, he'll achieve his fourth campaign of playing in every contest.

  • Braves' Matt Olson: Sets franchise record

Olson's home run during Saturday's win over the Marlins was his 52nd of the season, setting a new franchise record for Atlanta, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. Andruw Jones held the old record of 51, which he set in 2005. Olson leads the majors this season in both homers and RBI (129), and the biggest obstacle to him winning the NL MVP Award in 2023 could be the historic numbers put up by teammate Ronald Acuna (calf), who sits three long balls short of the first 40-60 season in baseball history.

  • Braves' Matt Olson: Goes deep again Tuesday

Olson went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, a walk and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 7-6 win over the Phillies. The homer was Olson's 51st on the campaign, tying Atlanta's franchise record, which was set by Andruw Jones in 2005. Olson is now seven clear of Pete Alonso and Shohei Ohtani for the MLB lead in long balls, while Atlanta is on the cusp of clinching an NL East title.

He slashed .611/.682/1.167 overall during that five-game stretch with three home runs, seven RBI and seven runs and is now batting a career-best .277 on the season. Though teammate Ronald Acuna remains the heavy frontrunner for the National League MVP honors, Olson (48 home runs, 121 RBI and 112 runs in 142 games) has done his part to push the likes of Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman for a top-three spot in the balloting.
