Analysis

This is the perfect opponent for an NC State bounce back after getting embarrassed by Virginia on Tuesday night. The Wolfpack were challenged by Will Wade after the loss and for the most part have done a good job responding to defeats in ACC play. The Fighting Irish, meanwhile, just lost by 44 points to Duke on Tuesday night as they fell to 0-12 against top-100 competition since Jan. 1. Notre Dame lost its best player (Markus Burton) 10 games into the season and hasn’t had its most dynamic freshman (Jalen Haralson) since Feb. 10 because of an ankle injury. NC State’s inconsistent performances may open the door to surprising outcomes, but given the spot I think an engaged Wolfpack team wins by several possessions.

The Aggies won the first meeting 74-70 in Austin, and I like them to complete the sweep and cover. Texas has lost two straight and has struggled to finish games, in part due to the Longhorns' subpar bench. Key reserve forward Lassina Traore (knee) has not played since Feb. 3. It is unclear when he'll return. Look for Texas A&M to push the pace and pull away late.

The Ottawa Senators currently lead the league in fewest shots allowed and have an impressive +236 shot differential, including a +32 margin in High-Danger scoring chances. The Maple Leafs rank last in shots allowed and have a -256 shot differential, along with a -15 High-Danger differential. When these teams met last December, the Maple Leafs emerged victorious with a 7-5 win, fueled by two Power-Play goals and an empty-netter. Last year, the Maple Leafs eliminated Ottawa from the playoffs, and now the Senators are even more motivated to seek revenge after another recent defeat. This will be Toronto’s third game in four days after playing Florida on Thursday. Teams are 21-31 in games after playing the defending champs without extended rest.

The Caps are playing Friday without star defenseman John Carlson, and he is out Saturday. Washington is using No. 1 Logan Thompson in net vs. Vegas. So that means downgrade Charlie Lindgren (3.37 GAA) for this one. And Saturday is a one-game trip that players hate, so anyone on Washington remotely banged up probably stays home. I like fading teams at the end of a road trip and backing home teams ahead of one -- that's where the Habs are Saturday as they head out on the Cali Swing after. The Caps have won both meetings (Lindgren allowed four in his start), but that makes me like this a tad more as no club wants to be swept by a conference rival. "Allez Canadiens Allez!"
