  • Ray Emery: Passes at age 35

Emery, 35, passed away early Sunday morning in an apparent drowning accident in Hamilton, Ontario, Emily Kaplan of ESPN.com reports.

According to Hamilton Police, Emery's body was recovered in a harbor, where he was last seen before being reported missing hours earlier. An Ontario native, Emery spent 11 years in the NHL with the Senators, Flyers, Blackhawks and Ducks, winning his lone Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2013. Emery had last appeared in the NHL during the 2014-15 campaign and played in the AHL and for a German club the season after before his career wrapped up.

  • Flyers' Ray Emery: Clears waivers Saturday

Emery has cleared waivers, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.

Emery was on return waivers since he had been with foreign club Deutsche Eishockey Liga prior to signing a tryout contract with the Flyers and subsequently signing with the club Friday to play out the remainder of the regular season. Barring an injury to Steve Mason, it's not likely that Emery will see any game action with the Flyers barely hanging onto the second wild-card playoff spot out of the Eastern Conference.

  • Flyers' Ray Emery: Pens contract with Flyers

Emery signed with Philadelphia on Friday for the remainder of the season.

If the Flyers hold on to the wildcard spot, Emery will not be eligible to suit up in the postseason because he was not with the team at the trade deadline. The netminder has bounced around for the 2015-16 campaign, as he spent time with two separate clubs in the AHL as well as a stint with the Mannheim Eagles of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga where he saw the most game action. Look for the 33-year-old to give starter Steve Mason some time off heading into the playoffs.

  • Maple Leafs' Ray Emery: On tryout contract with AHL Toronto Marlies

Emery is on a tryout contract with the the AHL Toronto Marlies. He currently sits third on the depth chart with the team.

The situation might not last long -- injured goalie Garret Sparks is due back soon and Antoine Bibeau will likely be back from the big club soon as James Reimer gets closer to full health. Emery is fully recovered from experimental surgery to halt avascular necrosis, which causes the deterioration of the ball in the hip. But Emery is unlikely to ever see NHL ice again -- the odds are long for him to return to the bright lights in an NHL city and he might end up in the ECHL sooner rather than later.

  • Emery Sharp In Bolts Camp Debut

He stopped all 10 shots he faced in 30 minutes of play.He still has a long haul to make the team now that Kristers Gudlevskis is back to form. Gudlevskis is under contract with the team and Emery would need to continue to really impress. However, Gudlevskis could benefit with more seasoning in the minors and Emery is out to prove he still belongs in the NHL. Watch this battle carefully as camp progresses.
