Leighton will hang up his skates and call it a career, Scott Powers of The Athletic reports.
Over the course of his 18-year career, Leighton split time between the NHL and AHL, but did appear in 110 NHL games with Philadelphia, Carolina, Chicago and Nashville. In those outings, the netminder went 37-43-14 with a .900 save percentage and four shutouts.

Canucks' Michael Leighton: Signs, lands on waivers
The Canucks inked Leighton to a contract Tuesday after playing with Utica, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports. He has also been placed on waivers with the intention of sending him to AHL Utica.
Leighton's deal is likely of the two-way variety and should extend through the end of the 2018-19 campaign. The 37-year-old netminder has posted a 6-1-0 record with a 2.53 GAA and a .915 save percentage over seven appearances with Utica and could be a candidate for recall if injuries take their toll on the team's NHL netminders.

Penguins' Michael Leighton: Returning to action in minors
Leighton (undisclosed) will suit up for AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Friday versus Binghamton.
Leighton has been sidelined since late December due to his undisclosed injury, but will return to the crease for the Baby Pens. This is good news for Pittsburgh's minor-league affiliate, as an injury to Matt Murray (concussion) has forced the organization to keep both Tristan Jarry and Casey DeSmith in the NHL.

While minor-league injury news rarely affects fantasy owners, Leighton's status will impact the Pens' decision on who to call up to fill the backup role with Matt Murray (undisclosed) currently sidelined. Casey DeSmith might seem like the obvious choice, but with Leighton unavailable, that would leave the Baby Pens without a viable option between the pipes.

Penguins' Michael Leighton: Traded to Pittsburgh
The Coyotes traded Leighton and a 2019 fourth-round pick to the Penguins in exchange for Josh Archibald, Sean Maguire and a 2019 sixth-round pick Tuesday.
The Penguins clearly wanted to add a veteran backup so they could bolster their organizational depth at goaltender, and they only needed to part with a pair of depth players and a sixth-round pick to do it. However, it's hard to believe the team will be able to trust Leighton with any starts at the NHL level this season, as he struggled in limited action last year with a 2-2-0 record while registering an ugly 3.43 GAA and .870 save percentage in four appearances with the Hurricanes. The 36-year-old backstop will report to Pittsburgh's AHL affiliate.

Despite getting called up to the big stage Monday, Leighton didn't see any action in road games versus the Ducks and Golden Knights, respectively. The lanky goalie is best viewed as an emergency option for a Coyotes team that's caught in the cellar of the league standings.

Coyotes' Michael Leighton: Headed to the desert
Leighton was acquired by the Coyotes on Tuesday, along with Tye McGinn, in return for Louis Domingue, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports.
Leighton wasn't able to crack the Tampa Bay roster during his limited time there and heads west to likely serve as the minor-league goalie for the Coyotes as an insurance policy for Antti Raanta and Scott Wedgewood. The Coyotes organization will be the ninth one that Leighton has been a part of during his career, which generally speaks to the level of play that is expected out of him.

The 36-year-old Leighton played the entirety of the contest against one of his many former teams. Leighton -- a depth goalie for Hurricanes affiliate AHL Charlotte -- will undergo surgery as the result of an undisclosed injury that will keep him shelved for 4-to-6 weeks.
As noted in this latest report, Leighton had been dominant in the minors this season, fashioning a 2.17 GAA over 23 games -- tied for fourth in the league. Tom McCollum was loaned from Calgary's system at the AHL trade deadline and will serve as the replacement.
