Steve Downie's 2013 season lasted just two games and a little more than 16 minutes of ice time before it came to a disappointing, painful end.

The Colorado Avalanche announced Wednesday evening that Downie suffered a torn ACL during Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings and will be out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery to repair it.

It's a big loss for the Avalanche, who acquired Downie last February from Tampa Bay in exchange for defenseman Kyle Quincey. He's had his disciplinary problems on the ice over the years and isn't always the most popular guy in the NHL due to the way he plays, but he's a very productive player and has been a consistent 40-point producer per season.

In 75 games last season with Tampa Bay and Colorado, Downie scored 14 goals to go with 27 asssists.
