Top Korey Toomer News

  • Korey Toomer: Let go by Green Bay

Toomer was released by the Packers on Wednesday.

Toomer was released to make room for safety Eddie Pleasant on the 53-man roster. The seven-year veteran played 12 defensive snaps and 100 special teams snaps across seven games with the Packers this season, during which time he recorded three tackles. He'll be free to search for a depth role elsewhere in the league if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

  • Packers' Korey Toomer: Signs with Packers

Toomer signed a contract with the Packers on Monday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports.

Toomer, who was recently let go by the 49ers, provides the Packers with a veteran presence at inside linebacker while the team deals with injury at the position.

  • 49ers' Korey Toomer: Inks deal with San Francisco

Toomer signed a one-year deal with the 49ers on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.

Toomer saw a steep decline in defensive snaps last season with the Chargers, dropping from 544 in 2016 all the way to 266. His production unsurprisingly tailed off as a result, pushing him further off the IDP radar. With his new organization, Toomer's usage on defense could hinge almost entirely on the availability of Reuben Foster (neck), whose status for the 2018 season hangs in the balance following a pair of offseason arrests.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Unable to match 2016 figures

Toomer accumulated 48 tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown across 15 games in 2017.

Toomer rotated with Hayes Pullard as the starting inside linebacker to start the season, but once Denzel Perryman returned from a preseason ankle injury in Week 10 the 29-year-old was essentially slotted as a special teams player. While Toomer racked up numbers during his time in the starting lineup, the defense struggled to stop the run, only turning things around when Perryman made his 2017 debut. With Perryman expected to be fully healthy next season, Pullard still hanging around as a cheap backup, and the tantalizing promise of second-year inside linebacker Jatavis Brown, it'll be interesting to see whether the Chargers make an effort to re-sign Toomer. An unrestricted free agent heading into the offseason, Toomer could be a serviceable option in deeper IDP leagues should he find a home as a starting inside linebacker.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Impressive performance in win

Toomer tallied seven tackles (five solo), a sack and a forced fumble in the 14-7 win over the Jets on Sunday.

With Denzel Perryman missing Sunday's game due to a hamstring injury, Korey Toomer and Hayes Pullard shared the starting middle linebacker duties and performed well enough for the Chargers to pick up the win. While both Toomer and Pullard put together enough counting numbers to make their IDP owners proud, the Jets did manage to run for nearly 200 yards Sunday, a callback to the Chargers' defensive woes earlier in the year while Perryman worked his way back from a preseason ankle injury. Given Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times reported Perryman could be on track to return in Week 17, both Toomer and Pullard would immediately become bench fodder for fantasy owners playing IDP roulette.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Returns interception for touchdown

Toomer recorded two tackles and also returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown in the 54-24 win over the Bills on Sunday.

Toomer has seen his playing time slip dramatically with the emergence of Hayes Pullard (neck) and return of Denzel Perryman. The interception Sunday was the first of Toomer's five-year career.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Secures eight tackles

Toomer racked up eight tackles (seven solo) in the 24-10 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.

Not surprisingly, Toomer put together solid numbers with shockingly productive inside linebacker Hayes Pullard out thanks to a knee injury. With Denzel Perryman (ankle) nearing a return and Pullard unlikely to miss a second straight game, the days of relying on Toomer in IDP leagues may soon be coming to a close.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Earns six tackles and forced fumble

Toomer piled up six tackles (four solo) and forced a fumble in Monday's loss to the Broncos.

The forced fumble was a critical one as the Chargers rallied back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter, only to have the game-tying field goal blocked at the end of the game. Regardless, it was a solid performance for the other inside linebacker, with his counterpart Jatavis Brown gobbling up most of the tackle opportunities (14 tackles Monday). Still, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better, under-the-radar option in IDP leagues, as Toomer will continue to patrol the middle of field while Denzel Perryman continues to rehab following preseason ankle surgery.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Listed as starting inside linebacker

Toomer is listed as the Chargers' starting inside linebacker along with Jatavis Brown on the team's official depth chart.

Toomer's place on the top unit was fully expected after the Chargers released his primary competition for a starting role, Nick Dzubnar, over the weekend. While Denzel Perryman continues to rehab from ankle surgery and remains on injured reserve, Toomer could be a valuable IDP asset for the immediate future.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Starts preseason contest

Toomer started Saturday's preseason contest against the Rams, finishing the game with one tackle.

While the stat line wasn't eye-popping, Toomer's start Saturday likely means the 28-year-old is the front runner to fill in as the second inside linebacker, a spot vacated by the injured Denzel Perryman (ankle). While head coach Anthony Lynn refused to end the competition for the starting spot outright, suggesting to ESPN's Eric D. Williams that the job was, "wide open right now," all the preliminary information seems to favor Toomer. Both Toomer and Nick Dzubnar will have one more chance to impress during the team's final preseason contest Thursday against the 49ers.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Making strong case for starting role

Toomer registered five tackles (four solo) in Sunday's preseason loss to the Saints.

Perhaps more importantly, Nick Dzubnar, Toomer's main competition for the other inside linebacker job alongside Jatavis Brown, failed to make a tackle on Saints' running back Alvin Kamara that led to a 50-yard touchdown run to begin the first quarter. That misplay drew the ire of head coach Anthony Lynn after the game, which gives further credence to the notion that Toomer is the frontrunner for a starting role. In 13 games last season, Toomer tallied 75 tackles and became a surprisingly reliable IDP option after the Chargers were besieged by injuries.

  • Chargers' Korey Toomer: Signs restricted free-agent tender

Toomer signed his restricted free-agent tender with the Chargers on April 4, Rickey Henne of Chargers.com reports.

Toomer inked a contract with the Chargers last September and proved to be a key member of the team's linebacking corps. He recorded 75 tackles in his 13 games with the Chargers and is set to compete for a meaningful role again in 2017.
