Player Outlook
At 10 points per game, the 49ers DST ranked as a top-10 unit, but they'll get drafted like a top-five unit this year. That's because they're headlined by pass rusher Nick Bosa and linebacker Fred Warner, two absolute studs. New additions this offseason include rushers Leonard Floyd and Yetur Gross-Matos, D-tackle Maliek Collins and linebacker De'Vondre Campbell, but it's new defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen who might be the biggest addition of all. Sorensen, a former safety, is very much in line with other former Niners defensive playcallers in that he's aggressive and values zone coverage. Expect him to help keep the Niners defense as one of the better units in Fantasy. Tack on a mostly favorable schedule to begin the year (the Jets, at the Vikings, at the Rams, vs. the Patriots) and there isn't a major weakness to call out. The Niners are worth one of your last two picks on Draft Day.

Hawkins (wrist) was spotted participating during San Francisco's minicamp sessions. The 26-year-old safety out of San Diego State seems to be past the wrist injury that he sustained towards the end of the 49ers' 2023 campaign. Hawkins appeared in one game last season, recording four total tackles and nabbing one interception. He's expected to compete for a depth role in San Francisco's secondary as the offseason continues.

Greenlaw (Achilles) no longer requires a walking boot, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Greenlaw made a public appearance at an event in San Jose and discussed his recovery from Achilles surgery. • 49ers' Malik Mustapha: San Francisco adds in fourth round

The 49ers selected Mustapha in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 124th overall. Mustapha (5-foot-10, 209 pounds) is a burly safety out of Wake Forest with a downhill but explosive game, providing not just a physical presence but one that flies in screaming. He might even be comparable to his new teammate Talanoa Hufanga, who has made a mark the last two years as the strong safety in the 49ers defense. The 49ers doubtlessly love Hufanga, but he is returning from a Week 11 ACL tear and is in the last year of his contract. Mustapha, out of Wake Forest, might be the tentative long-term replacement if the 49ers can't find the necessary cap space for a Hufanga extension. If Mustapha can earn a three-down role at some point, he would likely project as a standout IDP option due to his consistent presence in the box.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Hufanga (knee) is expected to return to the mix "sometime in training camp," David Lombardi of The Athletic reports. Prior to sustaining his knee injury, the 2021 fifth-round pick had recorded 52 tackles and three interceptions in 10 regular-season contests. Once Hufanga is fully recovered, he'll have an opportunity to reclaim his role as the 49ers' starting strong safety.

  • Saints' Chase Young: In line for neck surgery

Young is slated to undergo neck surgery that will keep him sidelined until at least training camp, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. On the heels of signing a one-year, $13 million contract with the Saints on Monday, Young now will address an injury that may stem from the stinger that he suffered back in the 2023 preseason and resulted in him being inactive for Week 1. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, he spent the first three and a half seasons of his career with Washington before landing with the 49ers at the trade deadline in October. Young has 16.5 sacks among his 100 tackles in 43 career contests.

  • Chase Young: Looks set to sign with New Orleans

Young is expected to sign a contract with the Saints after visiting with the team Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Young, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft and former Defensive Rookie of the Year, was acquired by the 49ers prior to last season's trade deadline. He tallied 2.5 sacks across nine regular-season games with San Francisco but was allowed to walk in free agency, where it looks like he'll get a fresh start in New Orleans. Young looks to finally be back in top form after knee issues significantly hampered him in 2021 and 2022, and it would be an ideal situation for him to pair with (and learn from) veteran defensive end Cameron Jordan with the Saints.

The 49ers signed Gross-Matos to a two-year, $18 million contract Thursday. He registered just 13 sacks across four seasons, including a career-best 4.5 in 2023. Perhaps new Niners DC Nick Sorensen can get more out of the 26-year-old.
